Vattenavvisande impregnering av betong : Framställning och undersökning av vattenavvisande betongytor / Hydrophobic impregnation of concrete : Preparation and study of water-repellent concrete surfaces

Nasiri, Basir, Oliva Rivera, Alexander January 2015 (has links)
The focus of this study was to develop and evaluate hydrophobic surfaces of concrete. The idea was based on an assumption that nano-modification of concrete surface, in combination with a hydrophobic impregnation, can result in superhydrophobic concrete. The work was performed in cooperation with the CBI Betonginstitutet in Borås, where the laboratory tests of ultra-high performance concrete, and the effects of two different hydrophobic agents, StoCryl HG200 and SILRES®BS1001, on water repellency, were investigated. In order to produce a textured surface, different techniques were used: to cast concrete in the textile forms and to produce new forms of silicone with textile patterns. For the production process, different types of textile were selected. The results indicated that different textiles, of different surface structure, can influence the hydrophobicity level of the concrete surface. Silicone form has proven to be most efficient in the texturing of the concrete surface, and in combination with impregnation, several superhydrophobic surfaces were achieved. Silicone can be re-used, thus contributing to a sustainable and repeatable technique. The tests used for the examination of hydrophobicity were: roll-off and contact angle. The durability of the hydrophobicity level of the surfaces against freeze was tested. The test did not follow a standard method but was based to the regular climatic conditions that occur in Sweden,.The use of ultra-high performance concrete with super hydrophobic surfaces can protect the façade and the insulation against penetrating damp. The façade thickness of 10 mm could successfully exchange thick façade element with steel reinforcement. In conclusion, the concrete surface is easy to clean, and due to its long life spans, it is economically favorable.

Improving the System Performance of High Altitude Platforms Serving Suburban Areas / Improving the System Performance of High Altitude Platforms Serving Suburban Areas

Hasan, Md. Al-Mahadi, Islam, Mainul January 2012 (has links)
High Altitude Platforms (HAP) has been evolving to make a new history in wireless communications infrastructure. A number of applications and services have been proposed for HAP based communications which advance HAP over terrestrial and satellite infrastructure for future communications. Providing high speed multimedia mobile communications through HAPs to the users of Third Generation (3G) holds strong position using one of the proposed band, 2GHz. In this study we investigated how to improve the performance of 3G serving from HAP over a territory having suburban characteristics. Two proposed channel models, free space loss and shadowing loss, has been used to analyze the performance of HAP systems at 2GHz frequency band for suburban regions. Three different parameters namely antenna bore point, HAP antenna roll off factor and user antenna roll off factor have proposed to improve the performance of HAP systems while considering suburban regions. A scenario has introduced consisting of an ideal suburban and rural region to serve 3G services while emphasizing on suburban region. The number of HAPs required to serve the defined suburban region is restricted to at least three due to elevation dependent losses in the scenario. The three proposed parameters have been used to improve the performance of 3G services over the selected suburban region. Application of the parameters over suburban region gives different performances which can be categorized in different ways. Some of the parameters are more elastic than others for a certain coverage area. We conclude with adaptive application of the parameters for 3G services over suburban area to have improved performance of HAP. / +46720459586

Florida Nonpartisan Trial Court Elections: An Analysis of Voter Turnout and Ballot Roll-Off

Fagan, Shannon L 01 January 2018 (has links)
This research explains the variance in voter turnout and ballot roll-off in county and circuit nonpartisan judicial elections in Florida from 2014 and 2016. Based on theory, a collection of constituent (demographic and socioeconomic), candidate, competition, and contextual variables is gathered to construct four regression models. Two full regression models were constructed for turnout and roll-off and analyzed using SPSS software, in addition to two best regression models analyzing five statistically significant variables found within each full model. Presidential year elections and higher populations age 65 and up had positive impacts on voter turnout, while primary elections, campaign expenditures, and populations of minor (other) party registered voters had statistically significant negative effects on turnout. Increases in ballot roll-off were associated with presidential year elections, and populations with more college degrees, higher median household income, and higher percentages of voters registered with no party affiliation or minor political parties. Roll-off decreased in primary elections. While various contextual, competition, and constituent variables had significant impact on both turnout and roll-off in Florida judicial elections, candidate characteristic variables had no significant impact on differences in voter turnout and ballot roll-off.
