Instructional Rounds and Problem-Solving: An Evaluative Case Study

In the target district, instructional rounds (IR), were implemented to reform district-wide educational practices to increase student problem-solving skills over time. This evaluative case study investigated the perceived efficacy of IRs as a model to address student problem-solving. Specifically, the study examined the influences, if any, that the IR process has had on problem-solving, academics, and pedagogy since implementation. The study was framed by Bandura's social learning theory as it states that behavior is learned from one's environment through the process of observation. Qualitative data were collected from 86 stakeholders through a district-wide questionnaire, semi-structured interviews with 8 administrators, and a review of IR feedback notes and fundamental instructional practices. Data were analyzed and open coded to identify common themes and assess if there was perceived efficacy of the IR process. Findings showed that participants perceived the implementation of IRs as effective in improving academic, social, and pedagogical processes throughout the district. Participants shared the opinion that IR improved critical thinking among students, though there was no formal measure for this. A white paper was generated to inform the district of these changes, with recommendations for improvement in instructional rounds implementation. The project will promote social change by improving the teaching and learning process for students, teachers, and administrators at the target district. Based on what was reported about IR, continuing to improve the IR process can bring improvements to the teaching and learning process which will support stronger problem- solving, collaboration, and critical thinking among students.

Christopher Rouse's Wolf Rounds: Compositional Insight and World Premiere Performance Preparation

The purpose of this essay is to explore the commissioning process of a wind ensemble piece by notable composer Christopher Rouse, and its significance to the wind ensemble repertoire. This essay will use the University of Miami Frost Wind Ensemble and Christopher Rouse's Wolf Rounds as the primary example. This discussion will provide an extensive background review of Christopher Rouse's early musical experience and life's accomplishments. It will focus on his creative process and document the performance preparation of Wolf Rounds as experienced by the Frost Wind Ensemble, conducted by Professor Gary D. Green. The final part of this essay will investigate the compositional insight of Wolf Rounds as well as the inspiration and motivation of Rouse to write for the wind ensemble genre. While Rouse has written for many different types of ensembles, this will be his first published addition to the wind repertoire. Wolf Rounds was chosen as the primary composition because of its significance to the composer as his first composition for winds and percussion.

In-home consumer evaluations of individual muscles from beef rounds subjected to tenderization treatments

An in-home evaluation of beef value cuts from the round was conducted to determine ways to improve palatability attributes for steaks prepared by consumers. The M. vastus lateralis, M. rectus femoris, M. semimembranosus, and M. adductor (n = 266) muscles were either blade tenderized, enhanced with a salt and phosphate solution, or served as a control. Consumers (n = 261) cooked these steaks as they normally would and were asked to document cooking method and degree of doneness, as well as palatability ratings for overall like, tenderness, juiciness, flavor intensity, and flavor desirability for each steak. Enhancing round muscles with a salt and phosphate solution improved most palatability traits compared to those that were blade tenderized or not treated. For M. semimembranosus and M. vastus lateralis, the enhanced steaks received higher (P < 0.05) ratings for all palatability traits. For the most part, cooking method and degree of doneness had little influence on consumer palatability ratings. Where differences occurred, they were muscle specific, which may allow limited recommendations for certain muscles with respect to the most appropriate cooking method and degree of doneness.

Information sharing by nurses in intensive care units with and without interdisciplinary rounds

Situation awareness and distributed situation awareness are important concepts in critical care, where large interdisciplinary teams must coordinate their activities through information sharing to provide lifesaving treatment to patients. Little is known, however, about how nurses contribute to distributed situation awareness in different types of intensive care settings. The purpose of this study was to explore information sharing by nurses in two intensive care units, with and without interdisciplinary rounds. The method of rapid qualitative inquiry was used, which emphasizes data triangulation and iterative data analysis. In each of two intensive care units studied, four RNs were observed for eight hours each, and the content and characteristics of information sharing were recorded. This was followed by chart reviews to determine the impact of information sharing by nurses on patient care. The results demonstrated that there was little difference in the type of information shared, the pattern of information sharing by nurses in the two units, and the impact that information sharing had on patient care. An important exception, however, was that nurses in the unit without interdisciplinary rounds contacted physicians twice as often as nurses in the unit with interdisciplinary rounds. The results were integrated into a revised model of distributed situation awareness. / Graduate

Stochastic, distributed and federated optimization for machine learning

We study optimization algorithms for the finite sum problems frequently arising in machine learning applications. First, we propose novel variants of stochastic gradient descent with a variance reduction property that enables linear convergence for strongly convex objectives. Second, we study distributed setting, in which the data describing the optimization problem does not fit into a single computing node. In this case, traditional methods are inefficient, as the communication costs inherent in distributed optimization become the bottleneck. We propose a communication-efficient framework which iteratively forms local subproblems that can be solved with arbitrary local optimization algorithms. Finally, we introduce the concept of Federated Optimization/Learning, where we try to solve the machine learning problems without having data stored in any centralized manner. The main motivation comes from industry when handling user-generated data. The current prevalent practice is that companies collect vast amounts of user data and store them in datacenters. An alternative we propose is not to collect the data in first place, and instead occasionally use the computational power of users' devices to solve the very same optimization problems, while alleviating privacy concerns at the same time. In such setting, minimization of communication rounds is the primary goal, and we demonstrate that solving the optimization problems in such circumstances is conceptually tractable.

Thomas Ravenscroft, the English composer, editor, and arranger, is known for his participation in the St. Paul's Boys' Choir, as instructor of music at Christ's Hospital School, and as a prodigy. His best-known publications are a setting of the psalter, The Whole Booke of Psalmes, and the treatise, A Brief Discourse,which is an effort to revive mensural notation. Ravenscroft's works contain many examples of popular Elizabethan music which he edited and arranged. Part II of this thesis consists of an edition of his third publication, Melismata, a collection of nine rounds and fourteen partsongs. A list of critical notes is also included. The commentary to the edition includes a biography, a discussion of his works, the background and origin of the songs in Melismata, and an analysis of these songs.
