The Impact of Instructional Rounds on Teacher Learning

A suburban school district in northwest Washington State has invested in a teacher-led, school-based model of instructional rounds to improve collaborative relationships among teachers and further teacher understanding of an instructional framework, but there is little formal evidence that instructional rounds is meeting its goals. The purpose of this study was to determine if instructional rounds is impacting teacher learning. The conceptual framework that grounded this study was Wenger's construct of communities of practice, a social theory of learning. The key research questions were focused on how participation in instructional rounds impacts teacher collaboration and learning of the instructional framework. To address the research questions, a qualitative evaluative case study was conducted. Data were used collected by using individual, face-to-face interviews with 6 different teachers and reviewing program document. Teachers selected for interviews had participated in instructional rounds during the past 3 consecutive years, participated as an observer and as a host, and at least 2 participants had experience as a facilitator. Transcribed interviews and documents were coded, followed by a search for patterns and themes throughout the data. Results showed improvement in personal and professional relationships among teachers as well as improvement of teacher learning. Results also showed that the quality of teacher learning was dependent upon contextual factors. The findings of the study were used to develop a program evaluation report for the school district. This report helped school district administrators, principals and teachers determine whether to stop, start, expand, or refine the instructional rounds model in their schools. This professional learning model has the potential to change the way teachers learn to positively impact student improvement.

Family Experiences with ICU Bedside Rounds: A Qualitative Descriptive Study: A Dissertation

The hospitalization of a family member in an intensive care unit can be a very stressful time for the family. Family bedside rounds is one way for the care team to inform family members, answer questions, and involve them in care decisions. Few studies have examined the experiences of family members with ICU bedside rounds. A qualitative descriptive study, undergirded by the Family Management Style Framework developed by Knafl and Deatrick (1990, 2003) and Knafl, Deatrick, and Havill (2012), was done at an academic medical center examining families who both participated and did not participate in the family bedside rounds. The majority of families who participated (80%) found the process helpful. One overarching theme emerged from the data of participating families: Making a Connection: Comfort and Confidence. Two major factors influenced how that connection was made: consistency and preparing families for the future. Three types of consistency were identified: consistency with information being shared, consistency about when rounds were being held, and consistency with being informed of delays. The second major contributing factor was preparing families for the future. When a connection was present, families felt comfortable with the situation. When any of the factors were missing, families described feelings of anger, frustration, and fear. Family members who did not participate described feelings of disappointment and frustration about not having participated. As healthcare providers, what we say to families matters. They need to be included in decision-making with honest, consistent, easy-to-understand information.

I had both videos available, even in one of the matches I attend as a player. I was researching particular game elements quantitatively and qualitatively as well. Base to the evaluation of the matches, I tried to suggest appropriate practice to eliminate deficiencies, which could be further used in training process. Results Results show the position of Czech women's football in Europe, the comparison between top European teams and if any of Czech teams could success in strong competition. Further, results show model situation of teams in offensive system and how the goals are scored. Also, results led to point out the deficiencies in Czech women's football with offering of solutions. A couple of years ago the Swedish Armed Forces had no non-lethal weapons, but today the Swedish soldier has a number of tools to choose from.</p><p>The purpose of this paper is for the reader to get a presentation of which non-lethal weapons are used today by the Swedish Armed Forces and a sample of what non-lethal weapons are out on the market today. My main question is <em>which non-lethal weapons do the Swedish Armed Forces’ miss in their non-lethal capabilities set.</em></p><p>I have collected information from a wide selections of sources like reports from the Swedish Defence Research Agency, the Swedish Armed Forces’ own regulations and the Internet. The information is then processed and divided into five chapters: The development of non-lethal weapons, description of technologies, non-lethal weapons in the Swedish Armed Forces, Non-lethal weapons on the market and Results.</p><p>This paper is limited to handheld, portable and man to man non-lethal weapons, all non-lethal weapons in the Swedish Armed Forces or on the international market are not covered.</p><p>My conclusion is that the Swedish Armed Forces should acquire three 40 mm projectiles, one 12-gauge projectile and one TASER®.</p>

Return to loyalty : New patterns of cooperation in the Swedish labour market regime

<p>This study aims at defining the development of the macro/meso level Swedish labourmarket regime during the last decade. This includes the effect of structural changesand what development tendencies exist. For this purpose three questions have beenformulated:1. How can the macro/meso level relations between the labour market organizations of the bargainingrounds since 1997 be described using the concepts exit, voice and loyalty as an interpretation oforganizational choices?2. How can the changing relations between the labour market organizations be explained?3. Based on this, how can the present labour market regime be defined?For this purpose the concept of labour market regimes is used. The interactionbetween actors in this is interpreted through a cooperative game theory coupled withthe concepts exit, voice, loyalty. Exit means the actors leaving the system,corresponding to the negotiation game threats. Voice means negotiation conflictresolution. Loyalty both correspond to coalition patterns and forces keeping theregime in place. Material is informant interviews with key actors and officialdocuments from bargaining and negotiation. The results of the study are that therelations have been stabilized by the IA of 1997, since which the development istowards increased peak-level organizational involvement. Because of labour marketfragmentation this takes the form in confederation coordination between differentparties. To conceptualize this I propose the concept peak-level coordinatedbargaining. In this the coalition development is towards the reemergence of oldloyalty patterns and the inclusion of new actors in this system. To explain this pathdependency due to well established loyalties and actor continuity is suggested.</p>

Kan vi ronda? : Sjukhusrond som rutin och arbetsredskap / Ready for the rounds? : Hospital rounds as a routine and tool

Sjuksköterskor ifrågasätter ibland sin närvaro under ronden och för motivation krävs förståelse för yrkesrollens betydelse. Trots rondens potential för vårdutveckling saknar den erkännande som ett viktigt forskningsområde. Syftet var att studera ronden som företeelse på sjukhus. En litteraturstudie grundad på 13 artiklar utfördes. Resultatet belyser att ronden skedde på rutin, aldrig ställdes in samt innehade främst tre funktioner: planering och utvärdering av patientvården, en pedagogisk funktion samt en samordnande funktion. Rondens upplägg påverkade patienters upplevelse och delaktighet. Sjuksköterskor kände sig ofta exkluderade, hade svårigheter att förmedla information och bidrog sällan till beslutsfattandet. Sjuksköterskans bidrag under ronden var nödvändigt och höjde patientsäkerheten. Gemensamma verktyg för kommunikation, dokumentation och riskanalyser inom vårdteamet har utvecklats för att förbättra ronden. Det förekom att patienter och vårdpersonal var missnöjda med upplägget av ronden och i båda grupperna fanns de som kände oro under ronden samt hade bristfällig kunskap om dess innebörd och syfte. Ronden bör därför lyftas i utbildningen och studenter tränas i att kommunicera med andra inom vårdteamet. Yrkesverksamma bör främja patienters delaktighet och förståelse under ronden. Kommande forskning bör utgå från ett omvårdnadsperspektiv och riktas mot hur ronden kan användas som ett effektivt arbetsverktyg och hur teamarbete kan uppmuntras. / Nurses sometimes question their presence during the ward round and understanding of the importance of their professional role is required as motivation. In spite of the ward rounds’ potential for care development it lacks recognition as an important research area. The aim was to study the ward round as a phenomenon. A literature review was conducted using 13 papers. The findings reveal that the ward round was conducted as a routine part and was never cancelled. It consisted of mainly three functions; planning and evaluation of the patient care, a pedagogical function and a coordinating function. The format affected patients experience and participation. Nurses often felt excluded, experienced difficulties in providing information and rarely contributed to decision making. Nurses’ contribution in the ward round was essential and increased patient safety. Common tools for communication, documentation and risk analysis within the care team have been developed to improve the ward round. There were patients and staffs who were dissatisfied with the format and there existed anxiousness during the ward round and lack of knowledge about the meaning and purpose in both groups. The ward round needs to be highlighted in education and students need to practice communication with other care team members. Professionals should promote patient participation and understanding during the ward round. Future research should include a nursing perspective and address how the ward round could be used as an effective tool and how to promote teamwork.
