The Link between Child Physical Abuse and Violent Victimization: A Case of China

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: Child development scholars have demonstrated a host of negative outcomes of child physical abuse, including emotional problems, delinquency, and future victimization. However, it is unclear if child physical abuse during childhood is related to subsequent violent victimization during youth and young adulthood. Building on routine activity theory and prior research, and using data collected from 2,245 individuals in Changzhi, China, this study examines if the experience of child physical abuse is positively related to violent victimization in youth and young adulthood, and if the relationship between child physical abuse and violent victimization is mediated by an individual’s routine activities. The results from negative binomial regressions support routine activity theory. The implications of the findings for theory, research and practice are discussed. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Criminology and Criminal Justice 2016

The Effects of Low Self-Control, Unstructured Socializing, and Risky Behavior on Victimization

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: Prior research has looked at the effects of low self-control, unstructured socializing, and risky behaviors on victimization. In previous studies, however, the differences between routine activity and lifestyle theory have been overlooked. The aim of this study is to test the unique characteristics of both theories independently. Specifically, this study addresses: (1) the mediating effects of unstructured socializing on low self-control and victimization and (2) the mediating effects of risky behaviors on low self-control and victimization. Data were collected using a self-administered survey of undergraduate students enrolled in introductory criminal justice and criminology classes (N = 554). Negative binomial regression models show risky behaviors mediate much of the effect low self-control has on victimization. Unstructured socializing, in contrast, does not mediate the impact of low self-control on victimization. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Criminology and Criminal Justice 2014

The factors which affect the information system needs for decision making in the hotel industry (A comparison study between the U. K. and Egypt)

Hassan, M. A. M. M. January 1986 (has links)
This report contains evidence to show that the information provided by computers in the hotel industry, for the management work & decision making, has not changed too much since 1970. In most industries, the successful computer applications are clearly noticed in the routine work (clerical jobs) more than the management work (strategic & tactical jobs). As for the hotel industry the use of computers still comes at the back of the list. The hospitality characteristic of hotel work is the main reason why people and not machines are used Small hotels are different from large luxury hotels in using computers, mainly for economic reasons. Top managers are different from lower managers in using computers, simply for technical reasons (lack of management computer programmes). The British hotels are different from Egyptian hotels in applying computers and information technology successfully for reasons related to the influence of the managerial environment in each country. A comparison between hotels of the two countries shows the unsatisfaction of the hotel managers about the information they receive from their computer departments. The analysis of the management work, the identification of the decision making needs are still hard tasks for system analysts. The identification of both the managers' decisions & information needs is still not recognized, even by the managers themselves. The decision making approach is used in this study to identify both the managers' decisions & information needs and to evaluate the information systems available in the hotels of the two countries. The managerial environment of the country greatly influences the managers' decisions and system needs. This report outlines the background literature & approaches used to research this area. Use is made of the results of previous study done about Egyptian hotel industry and the factors which affect the success of the information systems there. Investigational work for the influence of the managerial environment in Egypt, over the structure of the marketing decision making process in the hotel industry is carried out. Areas for further ‘field’ research studies are highlighted.

Controlling "What You're Supposed to Do in College": An Examination of Social Control and Differential Association on Binge Drinking Behaviors

Byrd, Kaitland Marie 01 June 2013 (has links)
This study examined the influence of social control and differential association on an individual\'s alcohol consumption.  It was hypothesized that the four bonds of social control: attachment, involvement, commitment, and belief will decrease the likelihood of engaging in excessive drinking behaviors (Hirschi 1969). Hawdon\'s (1996) revised version of involvement that accounts for differences in the visibility of activities will be used instead of the traditional idea of involvement. This study compared the drinking behavior of college and non-college students. It was also hypothesized that having peer groups that engage in excessive drinking behaviors will influence the amount of alcohol that an individuals consume, because they are attempting to remain a part of that peer group (Sutherland 1947). This study used the Add Health  data set to tests these hypotheses. / Master of Science

Effekt av ändrade centrifugeringsparametrar på rutinkemi- och koagulationsanalyser / The effect of altered centrifugation parameters on routine chemistry and coagulation assays

Turan, Muhammed January 2022 (has links)
To separate plasma/serum from blood cells, blood samples are centrifuged. Currently, there is no standard centrifugation protocol available. However, there are several centrifugation recommendations from the tube manufacturers. The aim of this study is to evaluate centrifugation program with a shorter centrifugation time and higher centrifugal force and how it affects measured analyte concentrations. 120 sample pairs were collected in lithium-heparin tubes and sodium citrate tubes from 120 participants. One sample of each pair was then centrifuged with reference program (2000g, 10min) for routine chemistry samples and (2500g, 15min) for coagulation samples. The other sample of each pair was centrifuged with programs (3000g, 7min). The statistical analysis was performed using the Student’s t-test and the Holm-Bonferroni method. P-value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. There was no significant difference between data from BD tubes and Greiner tubes, therefore the corresponding data from both groups were merged. No statistically significant difference was observed for the following parameters; Cobalamin (B12), High-density lipoprotein (HDL), Lactate dehydrogenase (LD), Phosphate, Triglycerides (TG), Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), Activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), Fibrinogen (Fib) and Prothrombin complex PK (INRR). However, the statistical analysis showed a significant difference regarding potassium (K). Centrifugation program (3000g, 7min) can replace the programs (2000g, 10min) and (2500g, 15min) which are recommended by the tube manufacturers BD & Greiner, with the exception of Potassium which requires more research. A trace of increasing hemolysis, still within acceptable limits, was detected in samples centrifuged with programs (3000g, 7min). The centrifugation programs with a shorter time or less acceleration is preferred.

Victimization, Risky Behaviors, And The Virtual World

Morgan, Rachel 01 January 2010 (has links)
Social networking sites, such as Facebook and MySpace, have become increasingly popular among teens and young adults because of the availability of the internet. Because these websites promote interpersonal connections and information sharing among individuals around the world, personal information to online "friends" may be shared carelessly. However, little is known about the correlation between engaging in online activities, sharing personal information online, and susceptibility to online victimization and cyberbullying. This study analyzes data from the Parents & Teens 2006 Survey to examine the applicability of Routine Activities Theory as a theoretical framework for understanding cybervictimization and cyberbullying. Online teens and teens on social networking sites (SNS) were examined separately in this study to determine if social networking (SNS) teens were at an increased risk. The results indicated that participating in online activities and sharing personal information increased the risk for receiving a threatening email, instant message or text message. Teens whose parents did not have rules regulating their online activities and behaviors were also at an increased risk for receiving a threatening email, instant message or text message. The logistic regression models show that for social networking (SNS) teens, gender and age increase the odds of receiving a threat, compared to online teens.
