Lindeborg, Anna January 2012 (has links)
The aim of the study was to investigate how potential new parents aged 20-40 would prefer the information about soft markers to be handled. The study was designed as a pilot study, and a questionnaire was made with parameters divided into 11 scenarios. The questionnaire was handed out at lectures in the Stockholm area in April of 2012. Answers were analyzed in SPSS with chi-2 tests. 49 women and 36 men participated in the study. Potential new parents often wish to be informed of discovered soft markers. However, a significant portion of the participants say they prefer not to know about soft markers in their foetus in some scenarios. Scenarios where the condition is incurable or where the soft marker is placed in the brain or heart of the foetus are the ones where the most people say they want the information. A soft marker placed in the foetus’ intestines or skeleton is when the most people answer that they do not wish to recieve this information. Significant differences are seen between different groups. Women more often than men say they do not want information about a discovered soft marker. The same is true for those who are married or cohabitating when compared to singles. Those who are already parents want information about a soft marker to a lower degree than those who do not have children.

Sömnkvalitet hos patienter på rehabiliteringsklinik : Sömnrutiners påverkan på sömnkvalitet

Magnusson, Jessica, Lindberg, Sirpa January 2011 (has links)
Nyckelord: sömnrutiner, sömnkvalitet, patienter, rehabilitering / ABSRACT Background: Sleep is essential to enable people to experience the health and welfare. Aim: To examine sleep routines and surrounding factors relevant for a good sleep in patients in rehabilitation clinic.                                                                                                       Method: A quantitative descriptive cross-sectional survey was carried out by means of a questionnaire survey in two rehabilitation clinics in Stockholm. The patients (n=33) were taken out in consecutive order, on the basis that they were able to complete the questionnaire (adequate, oriented in space and time, understood the Swedish language). The questionnaire was designed based on a validated and reliable questionnaire, Karolinska Sleep Questionaire (KSQ).                                                                                                                                 Result:The overall assessment of sleep based on the four indexes, sleep quality index, awakeningindex, snoringindex and sleepiness/fatigue index showed that it was 76% who believed they had poor sleep. Sleep routine significance was assessed based on the VAS scale. 63% of patients estimated sleep routine the importance of medium to very important. In this study 42 % stated that they were disturbed in their sleep because of the surrounding factors. The sound was seen as the most disruptive factor.                                                            Conclusion: A sleep history clarifies the patient's sleep routine, and facilitate a good sleep quality for the patient.     Keywords: sleep routines, sleep quality, patients, rehabilitation

A Computational Model of Routine Procedural Memory

Tamborello, Franklin Patrick II January 2009 (has links)
Cooper and Shallice (2000) implemented a computational version of the Norman and Shallice’s (1986) Contention Scheduling Model (CSM). The CSM is a hierarchically organized network of action schemas and goals. Botvinick and Plaut (2004) instead took a connectionist approach to modeling routine procedural behavior. They argued in favor of holistic, distributed representation of learned step co-occurrence associations. Two experiments found that people can adapt routine procedural behavior to changing circumstances quite readily and that other factors besides statistical co-occurrence can have influence on action selection. A CSM-inspired ACT-R model of the two experiments is the first to postdict differential error rates across multiple between-subjects conditions and trial types. Results from the behavioral and modeling studies favor a CSM-like theory of human routine procedural memory that uses discrete, hierarchically-organized goal and action representations that are adaptable to new but similar procedures. / Office of Naval Research grants #N00014-03-1-0094 and #N00014-06-1-0056

Crime in Late Life

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: Most criminological theories are tested using samples of adolescents. Consequently, there is ample evidence regarding the correlates of criminal behavior committed by teenagers. The problem, however, is that there is relatively little information regarding the correlates of criminal offending committed during late life. This limits the ability to assess the generalizability of some of the leading theories in criminology. To fill this void in the literature the present study used a sample of 2,000 elderly people (i.e., 60 years of age and older) from Arizona and Florida to examine three issues: (1) the role of general and specific routine activity measures in the explanation of criminal activity in late life, (2) the invariance of low self-control across various subgroups of the elderly sample, and (3) the generality of self-control theory and routine activity theory. The analyses revealed several important findings. First, general routine activity measures are better predictors of general criminal offending than specific indicators. However, specific routine activity measures still matter in the explanation of specific types of crimes. Another important finding of this study was that low self-control has an invariant effect on criminal offending across gender, race/ethnicity, and age. Finally, self-control theory and routine activity theory are general frameworks that explain criminal behavior committed by older people in much the same manner as among teenagers. Routine activity does not mediate the link between low self-control and offending. Rather, both low self-control and routine activity exert independent effects on late life criminal activity, net of statistical controls. The present study concludes with a discussion of the findings situated in the literature and provides policy implications that stem from the results. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Criminology and Criminal Justice 2012

"Because I Like It? No, They Made Me Do It!!" Why Juveniles Engage In Sexting

Haegele, Jennifer Ann 01 May 2013 (has links)
Developments in technology have changed the way we do everything; advanced our research capabilities, enhanced our communication abilities and speeds, even the way people commit crimes. It provides perpetrators with a new way to commit traditional crimes as well as new forms of crime. One of the many opportunities involved with increased communication devices is known as sexting. Adolescent sexting has received national and local attention due to possible long-term implications such as registering as a sex offender and even suicide. Sexting, which is considered an antisocial behavior among adolescents, has progressively become implicated in peer pressure as well. Peer pressure causes individuals to commit cruel acts or crimes in which they normally would not do because they are forced, or feel obligated to do so, by their peers. Further study into peer pressure and sexting is needed to discover if peer pressure and opportunity are the reasons why adolescents engage in sexting. To discover this, I surveyed college undergraduate students to determine the causes behind their sexting habits in high school.

An Annotated Guide to Published Horn Warm-Up Routines, 1940-2015

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: This project examines over 40 publications consisting of published warm-ups, routines, and materials suitable for daily routines. The books were all written specifically for the horn and published between 1940 and 2015. They are split into periods of twenty years each during this timeframe: 1940-1959, 1960-1979, 1980-1999, and 2000-2015. Included are brief annotations for each of the books which consist of general biographical information on the author, a summary of the material presented in each routine including a breakdown of how much each author covers a set of defined components, and suggestions for which type of student would be best to utilize each routine through an assessment of its strengths. Trends are also examined within each time period that attempt to demonstrate the larger evolution within the project over the course of the entire 75-year period. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2016
