Synthesis and Characterization of ZIF-71/PDMS Membranes for Biofuel Separation

January 2017 (has links)
abstract: Membranes are a key part of pervaporation processes, which is generally a more efficient process for selective removal of alcohol from water than distillation. It is necessary that the membranes have high alcohol permeabilities and selectivities. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) based mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) have demonstrated very promising results. Zeolitic imidazolate framework-71 (ZIF-71) demonstrated promising alcohol separation abilities. In this dissertation, we present fundamental studies on the synthesis of ZIF-71/PDMS MMMs. Free-standing ZIF-71/ PDMS membranes with 0, 5, 25 and 40 wt % ZIF-71 loadings were prepared and the pervaporation separation for ethanol and 1-butanol from water was measured. ZIF-71/PDMS MMMs were formed through addition cure and condensation cure methods. Addition cure method was not compatible with ZIF-71 resulting in membranes with poor mechanical properties, while the condensation cure method resulted in membranes with good mechanical properties. The 40 wt % ZIF-71 loading PDMS nanocomposite membranes achieved a maximum ethanol/water selectivity of 0.81 ± 0.04 selectivity and maximum 1-butnaol/water selectivity of 5.64 ± 0.15. The effects of synthesis time, temperature, and reactant ratio on ZIF-71 particle size and the effect of particle size on membrane performance were studied. Temperature had the greatest effect on ZIF-71 particle size as the synthesis temperature varied from - 20 to 35 ºC. The ZIF-71 synthesized had particle diameters ranging from 150 nm to 1 μm. ZIF-71 particle size is critical in ZIF-71/PDMS composite membrane performance for alcohol removal from water through pervaporation. The membranes made with micron sized ZIF-71 particles showed higher alcohol/water selectivity than those with smaller particles. Both alcohol and water permeability increased when larger sized ZIF- 71 particles were incorporated. ZIF-71 particles were modified with four ligands through solvent assisted linker exchange (SALE) method: benzimidazole (BIM), 5-methylbenzimidazole (MBIM), 5,6- dimethylbenzimidazole (DMBIM) and 4-Phenylimidazole (PI). The morphology of ZIF- 71 were maintained after the modification. ZIF-71/PDMS composite membranes with 25 wt% loading modified ZIF-71 particles were made for alcohol/water separation. Better particle dispersion in PDMS polymer matrix was observed with the ligand modified ZIFs. For both ethanol/water and 1-butanol/water separations, the alcohol permeability and alcohol/water selectivity were lowered after the ZIF-71 ligand exchange reaction. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Chemical Engineering 2017

An analysis of the transfer duty implications on the 'sale'of a trust

Le Grange, Andries Johannes January 2013 (has links)
This dissertation is mainly a study of the nature of trusts and their daily operational limitations, which are frequently misunderstood and/or misused. My research question was whether a trust could be sold, and if so, what the tax implications of such a ‘sale’ would be. The overall approach was to perform a literature review and a critical analysis of current information available on South African trust law and the Transfer Duty Act 40 of 1949. Many studies have been undertaken in the past on various aspects of my subject, but the subject has never been studied as a cohesive whole. These studies formed the basis of the literature review. To arrive at an answer, an analysis of the available literature and South African judgments was undertaken. My concluding chapter gives an indication of whether a trust can be ‘sold’, what the current transfer duty implications are and what it is submitted they should be. / Dissertation (LLM)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / hb2014 / Mercantile Law / unrestricted

Should South Africa ratify the United Nations convention on contracts for the international sale of goods?

Malahlela, C.P.M. (Celia) January 2013 (has links)
The subject of this paper is whether South Africa should ratify the 1980 United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (the CISG). The CISG was enacted in an attempt to create a unified body of law to regulate the international transactions on sale of goods. Due to globalization, countries are trading with each other on a daily basis, and the need for a unified body of contract law has developed. / Dissertation (LLM)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / am2014 / Mercantile Law / unrestricted

Lean model of service to increase the attention span of an automotive workshop

Tuesta, Victor, Viacava, Gino, Raymundo, Carlos 01 January 2019 (has links)
The sale of vehicles in Peru has increased by more than 6% only between the years 2016-2017, with Peru being one of the seven countries with an increase in vehicle fleet between these years, and it is also the fourth country with the highest sales, only after Brazil, Argentina and Chile. However, the post-sale service by the companies that provide these services currently does not meet certain essential aspects to meet the demand, one of the most outstanding, the delivery time, largely due to bad practices and capacity problems. of the concessionaire, generating considerable losses. Thus, this study developed a methodology to optimize the production of preventive maintenance services in automotive dealers applying lean manufacturing tools in order to reduce waiting times, delivery of vehicles at the wrong time and defective services. The pilot proposal was validated in one of the largest concessionaires of preventive maintenance service. The methodology reduced the lead time in two hours. The queues were reduced before each process and the percentage of vehicles delivered untimely from 28% to only 8% was reduced. In addition, the culture of good practices was implemented.

Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ye : For Chorus and Orchestra

Salicco, Betty Lou Everett, 1925- 12 1900 (has links)
This composition is based off the poem of the same name by Richard Sale. No particular harmonic plan was envisioned for Parts I, II and IV, because it was necessary for the harmonic scheme to be as fluid as the poetry. If the ideas of the text were similar some attempt was made to use a similar or modified melodic line or harmonic scheme. The structure of the text became the structure of the work. The motivating factor is the text, hence the many meter changes in order to keep pace with the poetry.

A Study in Market Micromanagement: The Asymmetrical Effects of the 2008 Short Sale Ban on Stocks With and Without Traded Options

Weyerhaeuser, James W 01 January 2012 (has links)
This study provides an empirical analysis of the 2008 short sale ban. The evidence suggests that the presence of tradable options plays a crucial role in determining the effect of a short sale ban. Results show that if there are no traded options on a stock, the short sale ban brought abnormal returns of roughly +8%. However if there are traded options on a stock, the market maker exemptions nullify the positive effects of the ban. Furthermore, for the banned stocks that do experience positive abnormal returns during the ban, the lifting of the ban causes a prompt reversal of these returns. Findings suggest short sale bans cause an underrepresentation of negative opinions for as long as the ban lasts and that the presence of tradable options eliminates that underrepresentation by providing an alternative for pessimistic investors.
