The Role Of Secularization Within The Turkish Nation-state Building Process

Sari, Ozgur 01 December 2004 (has links) (PDF)
The objective of this study is to analyze the role of secularization within the Turkish nation-state building process between the late 19th and the early 20th century / hereby an emphasis will also be on the relations between the state and religion. This study will consider the Religious Affairs Directory as the key institutional actor in this process. This institutional reflection of secularization will be studied as an interesting case of state controlled social change on and over religion in society. The state reproduces its legitimization and discourse over the Religious Affairs Directory, therefore some publications and khutbas of that institution in 2003 and 2004 will be analyzed. On the other hand, secularization was defined on 5th February 1937 in the 1924 Constitution with the law numbered 3115, as the separation of the state and religious affairs and the equal distance of the state&rsquo / s position towards all beliefs and believers. The contradiction between the state&rsquo / s definition and institutional application of secularization will be criticized. The first contradiction is the integration of state and religious affairs. The statist discourse legitimizes the state through the religious affairs and as it will be seen in the analyzed publications and khutbas of the Religious Affairs Directory, the statist and religious discourses overlap each other. Since this overlapping enables the integration of state and religious affairs through the Religious Affairs Directory as a constitutional institution, the applications of this institution contradict with the constitutional definition of Turkish secularization. The second feature of the Turkish secularization is that the state applies this practice over only one sect (Sunni-Hannifin) which is an obstacle for the state&rsquo / s position against all the religious beliefs. The legitimization of the state is being done through the Sunni-Hannifin denomination and by this way the state takes a side among the various beliefs. Lastly, as the results of the historical analysis of this study reveal, it will be understood that the practice of manipulating the religion under the hegemonic state ideology is a tradition inherited from the late Ottoman period. The Republic of Turkey, which realized secularization within a constitutional definition and through institutional transformations, has continued to integrate the state with religion.

Die Säkularisation der Klosterbibliotheken im albertinischen Sachsen (Mark Meißen, Leipzig und Pegau)

Alschner, Christian 15 July 2010 (has links) (PDF)

Judaism and Catholicism in Italy during the Belle Époque: A Comparative Approach

Prigiotti, Giuseppe January 2015 (has links)

This dissertation compares the responses of Italian Jewish and Catholic intellectuals to the process of secularization and modernization triggered by Italian national unification (1861-1870). Arguing that, in the case of Italy, the borders separating Jewish and Catholic communities have been more porous than generally thought, my research intends to destabilize simplistic historiographical oppositions based on a dichotomous anti-/philo-Semitic approach. In comparing Judaism and Catholicism vis à vis the new, modern, and secular nation-state, I offer a more complex picture of the relation between these two religions. In order to avoid presenting a one-sided account, my comparative approach brings together studies and perspectives from different fields. The first three chapters analyze a wide variety of sources, ranging from official speeches to journal articles, archival documents, and literature. I analyze the Commemoration of the Capture of Rome (1870) given by Roman mayor Ernesto Nathan in 1910 and Salvatore De Benedetti’s 1884 Opening Address at the University of Pisa on The Hebrew Bible as a source for Italian literature, as well as articles published in the Jewish journals Il Vessillo Israelitico and Il Corriere Israelitico, the Catholic journal La Civiltà Cattolica, and the anticlerical journal L’Asino. The last chapter focuses on the Jewish historical novel The Moncalvos, written by Enrico Castelnuovo in 1908, investigating the problematic appeal of secularism and Catholicism for a Jewish family settled in Rome. By drawing on this variety of sources, my dissertation both scrutinizes the interrelated role of Jewish, Catholic, and secular culture in Italian national identity and calls for a reconsideration of the starting point of modern Jewish-Catholic dialogue, well before the events following the Shoah, the rise of the State of Israel, and the Second Vatican Council declaration Nostra Aetate.
/ Dissertation

Fluxos do espiritismo kardecista no Brasil: dentro e fora do continuum mediúnico

This dissertation proposes an interpretation of the Brazilian religious scenario, from Kardecism and its theodicy on. Such an approach is justified due to the the high rates of presumed believers in reincarnation shown in public opinion poles in Brazil, to the vivid exposure of the Kardecist cosmology in the media, and to the fact that Brazil is the center of dissemination of spiritism. The point of departure is the continuing debate among religious theoriticians about the contigent secularization processes and the disenchantment of contemporary societies. After showing a series of historical evidence concerning hybridisms and religious adaptations in colonial Brazil, it was possible to relate the current trend of “decentralized and astray” religiosity with modernity and local traditions. The second step of this research aims at investigating the emergence of the spiritist doctrine in the 19th century, the approach used by its codifier, Allan Kardec, in the organization of his works, the Kardecist theodicy based on the concept of the karma and the course of harassments and religious adaptations of spiritism in Brazil. By proposing a theoretical presupposition of continuum developed by Pedro de Camargo in order to define the universe of mediumistic religions in Brazil, one ponders that in Kardecist theodicy centered on evolutionism and on reincarnation is intended to rationalize the spiritist segment. However, the decentralization of the orthodox Kardecism and the fluency of its theodicy among dissident movements might indicate its reinterpretation both in the secular and religious fields. Such trends would probably contribute to the development of the spiritist cosmology and to an increase in the number of believers in reincarnation in Brazil. On pretence of providing an example, one carried out an analysis of the “concept of person” in Projeciology, a systematized... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Conceptualizing religion and spirituality in secular schools : a qualitative study of Albertan schooling

McKinnon, Margot January 2016 (has links)
Over most of the 20th Century, many educational systems around the world became increasingly secular, notably with lessening involvement of religious institutions. However, what it means to offer secular education to an increasingly diverse student population is emerging as a contemporary international educational issue. The face of immigration, the rights of Aboriginals, and increasingly diverse and individual forms of religiosity and spirituality have implications for secular education today. This qualitative study of Alberta schooling provides an example of a setting that underwent a high degree of secularization in the 1960's-1980's. A litigious but interpretive boundary exists for the extent educationists were to engage students in thinking about religion and spirituality. Yet, teachers operated with a high degree of autonomy. With these contextual factors as a backdrop, this study explored how a hierarchical sample of Alberta policy-makers, administrators, and teachers conceptualized religion and spirituality for secular secondary schools. Results show that Alberta Education conceptualized space for the conservative religious and Aboriginal communities, but not mainstream students. The students operated in a 'leave your faith at the door' secular model, curriculum was rationalized, and the function of schooling was perceived as preparing students for work. Findings show that principals and teachers challenged the lack of space for mainstream students to engage in the concepts of religion and spirituality. They argued the secular model disadvantaged mainstream students in exercising their right to religious freedom and developing religious literacy and sensitivity skills and it also prevented non-religious students from gaining access to religious/spiritual concepts and tools to facilitate wellbeing and resiliency.
