Vliv nízkých očekávání na vzdělání českých Romů a australských Aboridžinců / The Impact of Low Expectations on the Education of Czech Roma e indigenous Australians

Rambousková, Hana January 2016 (has links)
The topic of this diploma thesis is education of two ethnic minorities living in different majority societies and in different parts of the world - Czech Roma population and Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The author presents relevant sociological critical theories of education and outlines the history of the examined minorities and the development of the approach of the majority society towards these minorities. She focuses on the consequences of discrimination of minorities in the area of education. She identifies similarities between the life conditions of the examined minorities, as well as certain differences arising from different social conditions. One of the common features of both minorities is a low standard of education, which has a negative impact on all spheres of their life (for example, employment, housing conditions, health, and life expectancy). Two case studies presented by the author suggest that the low level of education of minority population is a consequence of wrong education policies in the countries under examination. The main cause of the failure of Roma children in Czech schools and of the children of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australian schools is not their incapability but rather the low expectations of their teachers, who put on...

Postavení Nejvyššího soudu v americkém politickém systému a význam jeho rozhodování pro politický proces ve Spojených státech amerických. / The position of the Supreme Court in the American political system and the significance of its decision-making for the political procedure in the USA.

Zástěra, Martin January 2011 (has links)
The thesis "Role of the U.S. Supreme Court in American system of government and the importance of Court's decisions for the political process in the United States of America" deals with the institutional role U.S. Supreme Court has in American system of government and puts emphasis on Court's decisions and their practical consequences on the politics in the United States. In history of the country the Court was an influential decision-making body on many occasions. Although shortly after the federation was established many intended to put the Court in position where weak powers given to it would not enable the institution to fully play its role of the guardian that keeps an eye on the constitutionality of adopted laws, at the beginning of the 19th century the Court found its place and became exactly what it was originally intended to be. Decision in Marbury v. Madison gained the Court the crucial power of judicial review. The power of judicial review completely changed the role of the institution that finally became the guardian of the Constitution. This thesis outlines the institutional position of the judicial branch and especially the position of the Supreme Court in American system of government. It also focuses on the political aspects of the nomination process of Supreme Court Justices and...

Rodina a škola jako socializační činitelé reprodukující genderové stereotypy v souvislosti s genderovou segregací na trhu práce / Family and school as the agents of socialization reproducing gender stereotypes in connection with gender segregation at the labour market

Hokeová, Lucie January 2013 (has links)
In the diploma thesis we ask the question whether the important agents of socialization family and school reproduce gender stereotypes which associate women with the role of a carer about family and household and men with the role of a breadwinner and with the orientation to the field of technology. We focus on whether family and school reproduce these stereotypes in connection with the definition of a career and in relation to horizontal and vertical segregation at the labour market. The reproduction of gender stereotypes viewing women as carer about family and household and men as breadwinners and the reproduction of gender stereotype connecting rather men than women with technical orientation are conjoined with gender scheme theory of Sandra Bem and with Pierre Bourdieu's concept of habitus. The diploma thesis aims at the Czech society, mainly in the period from 2001 to 2011. To answer the question we ask in the diploma thesis we draw on literature, on quantitative and qualitative research dealing with the themes we are concerned with, on statistics of Czech Statistical Office, Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, Institute for Information on Education, and on selected data from international longitudinal research International Social Survey Programme...

Dějiny a přítomnost afirmativních opatření (pozitivní diskriminace) v USA, České republice a dalších vybraných zemích. / The History and Presence of the Affirmative Action in the USA, in The Czech Republic and other Countries

Štědroň, Jakub January 2016 (has links)
The term affirmative action (U. S. English), or positive discrimination (British English) means positive steps taken to increase the representation of women and minorities in areas of employment, education, politics and business from which they had been historically excluded. In search for the roots of affirmative action I start at the very beginning of the US history describing institutionalized forms of slavery and later move on to segregation to demonstrate how deep and strong this exclusion was. Since the late 1960s this expression has been used to refer to policies that go beyond the simple prohibition of discrimination on grounds of race, national origin and sex in employment practices and educational system. These policies require further actions, affirmative actions, to make jobs and promotions and admissions to educational programs available to individuals from groups that have historically suffered from discrimination in gaining these opportunities or are, whether discriminated against or not by formal policies and informal practices, infrequently found in certain occupations or educational institutions and programs. In an effort to create an unprejudiced picture of this phenomenon of American modern society, I try to open my work for arguments of both sides, the proponents and the...
