Placed within a quantitative framework, 123 “socioeconomically advantaged” Grade 11 and 12 learners (ages 16 to 19) from two randomly selected private schools in Cape Town completed four self-administered has been identified for HIV prevention programmes to be specifically designed to meet the needs of the target audience. It is, therefore, hoped that the results of this study can contribute positively towards the development of effective, target- rt theory of planned action accounts for the low correlation between information and behaviour by identifying the strong influence of behavioural intentions, attitudes towards the behaviour, subjective norms, and perceived control in determining behaviour change. This research project primarily aims to assess the levels of sexual risk-taking behaviours, HIV-related knowledge, beliefs, and religiosity of private school adolescents, as well as to determine the nature of the relationships questionnaires. The HIV-KQ-18 questionnaire measured HIV-related knowledge, the Sexual History Questionnaire (SHQ) assessed sexual risk behaviour, the Sexual Risk Behavior Beliefs and Self-Efficacy Scales (SRBBS) measured the effect of attitudes, norms, self-efficacy and barriers to condoms on sexual risk-taking and protective behaviour, and the Santa Clara Strength of Religious Faith Questionnaire (SCSORF) assessed strength of religious beliefs. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, correlations and t-tests. Results showed that respondents engaged in lower levels of sexual risk-taking behaviour than those reported in South African literature from differing populations. A high level of HIV knowledge and reasonably high acceptance of safe-sex behaviours among respondents was also noted. No other significant differences were identified between this study and recent South African literature. The results of this study lend support to the relevance of the theory of planned behaviour. University students are reported as tending to engage in high-risk behaviours related to sex, alcohol and drugs. First-year university students are reported to be most vulnerable, as they lack experience to make good and risk-aware decisions when it comes to sexual liaisons. Available initiatives aimed at improving sexual behaviours of students are reported as being implemented simply because they work well somewhere else, without prior assessment of the needs/characteristics of the target population. This can negatively affect their effectiveness. The following question motivated the study: What factors influence sexual behaviours of first-year students on a university campus? This study sought to describe the perceptions of first-year students about engaging in sexual behaviours at a university campus. To answer the research question, theory of planned behaviour (TPB) was applied as the framework of the study. The study was descriptive in nature. Data were collected by means of a self-administered questionnaire from a conveniently selected sample of 240 first-year university students from one campus in the Eastern Cape. The measuring instruments were constructed from the constructs of the TBP, namely attitudes (ATT), perceived social norms (PSN), perceived behavioural control (PBC), and behavioural intentions (BI). The SPSS was used to analyse data for frequencies of responses and multiple regression. Most participants reported being sexually active (85.3%) and the lack of provision of information on sexual issues from adults (parents (23.3%) and church authorities (10.8%) was apparent. Perceived social norms were the most prominent factor that showed to be predictive of sexual behaviours with three significant predictor variables, namely partner age difference (beta = .059, ρ< .040), number of sexual partners in 3 months (beta = .238, ρ< .008) and condom use (beta = .095, ρ< .014). Behavioural intentions also showed some prediction, to a lesser extent, with one predictor variable, namely age at first willing intercourse (beta = .86, ρ< .001). The results from this study suggested that targeting social norms in intervention efforts aimed at improving sexual behaviours of first-year university students in the target population could be beneficial. More studies to explore available social norms in this target group and intervention to change negative norms are recommended. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die universiteitsomgewing bied studente meer geleenthede om seksueel aktief te wees. Daarbenewens is universiteitstudente na bewering geneig om hoërisikogedrag met betrekking tot seks, alkohol en dwelmmiddels te openbaar. Eerstejaarstudente word as die kwesbaarste beskou, aangesien hulle die ervaring kortkom om goeie, risikobewuste besluite oor seksuele verhoudings te neem. Tog word die beskikbare inisiatiewe vir die verbetering van seksuele gedrag onder studente blykbaar slegs in werking gestel omdat dit elders goed werk, sonder om eers die behoeftes/kenmerke van die teikenpopulasie te bepaal. Dít kan die doeltreffendheid van dié inisiatiewe benadeel. Die vraag wat as beweegrede vir hierdie studie gedien het, was: Watter faktore beïnvloed die seksuele gedrag van eerstejaars op ’n universiteitskampus? Die navorsing wou dus ondersoek instel na eerstejaars se opvattings oor seksuele gedrag en seksuele verhoudings op ’n universiteitskampus. Om hierdie navorsingsvraag te beantwoord, is ’n teorie van beplande gedrag (TPB) as studieraamwerk gebruik. Die studie was beskrywend van aard. Data is met behulp van ’n vraelys van ’n gerieflik gekose steekproef van 240 eerstejaar-universiteitstudente op ’n enkele kampus in die Oos- Kaap ingesamel. Die deelnemers het self die vraelys ingevul. Die meetinstrumente is saamgestel uit die verskillende konstrukte van die TPB, naamlik houdings (ATT), waargenome sosiale norme (PSN), waargenome gedragsbeheer (PBC) en gedragvoornemens (BI). SPSS-sagteware is gebruik om die data vir die frekwensie van response en meervoudige regressie te ontleed. Die meeste deelnemers het aangedui dat hulle seksueel aktief is (85,3%), en die gebrek aan inligting oor seksuele kwessies vanaf volwassenes (ouers 23,3%) en die kerk (10,8%) blyk duidelik. Waargenome sosiale norme het as die sterkste voorspeller van seksuele gedrag na vore getree, met drie beduidende voorspellerveranderlikes, naamlik ouderdomsverskil met bedmaats (Beta = .059, p< .040), aantal bedmaats in drie maande (Beta = .238, p< .008) en kondoomgebruik (Beta = .095, p< .014). Gedragvoornemens het ook ’n mindere mate van voorspellingsvermoë getoon, met een voorspellerveranderlike, naamlik ouderdom met eerste gewillige seksuele omgang (Beta = .86, p< .001). Die resultate van hierdie studie dui daarop dat intervensiepogings om seksuele gedrag onder eerstejaar-universiteitstudente te verbeter, by ’n klem op sosiale norme kan baat vind. Verdere studies oor die bestaande sosiale norme van hierdie teikengroep, sowel as intervensie om negatiewe norme te verander, word aanbeveel.

Certain “traditional” values are questioned on a continual basis. Many people argue that a new era represents new challenges and therefore new answers are needed – “traditional” values has nothing more to say in this new world. A “traditional” sex-ethic that believes sex should be kept for marriage, is one of the casualties. This thesis attempts to show that such a “traditional” sex-ethic is still relevant in this world, today. This can only be done by taking serious notice of the current state of a modern society, & by respecting the Christian tradition, as well as the Word of God. By bringing the Word of God into a critical dialogue with the modern world and the challenges that it represents, it will be possible to show that a “traditional” sex-ethic is still relevant in this modern world. The Word of God gives us no systematic theory on human sexuality. It is therefore important that we take the central theme of the bible as our point of departure. Love and justice should guide every decision people make: if we want to obey God’s central command of loving our neighbors, we need to approach others with love and justice. By keeping sex for marriage we stay true to what God expects of us. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In hierdie studie word daar gefokus op die uitdagings wat ons moderne samelewing aan die kerk en haar verstaan van seksualiteit stel. Sekere “tradisionele” waardes word bevraagteken, dikwels in die naam van ‘n nuwe konteks. ‘n Nuwe era bied nuwe uitdagings en daarom word baie van dit wat as “tradisioneel” beskou word verwerp as iets wat vandag geen waarde meer het nie. ‘n “Tradisionele” seks-etiek wat sê dat seks slegs in die huwelik hoort, is een van hierdie slagoffers. Hierdie tesis probeer dus aantoon dat só ‘n tradisionele seks-etiek vandag, in ‘n veranderende wêreld, steeds relevant is. Dit kan slegs aangetoon word deur deeglik kennis te neem van die stand van die moderne samelewing, ‘n waardering van die Christelike tradisie, en die Woord van God. Deur die Woord van God krities in gesprek te bring met ‘n moderne samelewing en die uitdagings wat dit bied, kan daar aangetoon word dat seks steeds in die huwelik hoort – nie voor die huwelik nie, ook nie buite die huwelik nie. Die Woord van God bied aan ons geen sistematiese teorie oor die mens se seksualiteit nie. Om hierdie rede is dit belangrik dat ons die sentrale tema van die Woord as ons vertrekpunt sal neem vir ons bestudering van die mens se seksualiteit. Die basis van dit alles is liefde en geregtigheid – God se opdrag om ons naaste lief te hê kan slegs deur hierdie twee riglyne ‘n realiteit word. Deur seks slegs in die huwelik te beoefen, is ons getrou aan hierdie opdrag van God.

Att leva tillsammans : En studie i kristen och feministisk sexualetik

There is an ongoing change in our society within the fields of sexual relationships. Along with new experiences there is a need for a shifting Christian ethical and theological reflection. The first aim of the dissertation is to analyze four models of Christian sexual ethics, all with an ambition to be reconstructive towards more traditional sexual ethics. The second aim is to criticize the models and make constructive proposals to a Christian and feminist sexual ethics. The theoretical outlook of the study is feminist theology with inspiration from the work of Michel Foucault on sexuality and Anthony Giddens on relationship. Lisa Sowle Cahill provides and argues for a sexual ideal from a Catholic tradition. By observing the functions of the body she distinguishes an ideal of heterosexual and fertile sexual relationships in a context of equality. Margaret Farley, representing the second model, is with Cahill arguing for a feminist view. Farley though turns to the norm of justice and puts the questions of just relationship in the center of her sexual ethical reflection. The third model is from the work of the Anglican theologian Adrian Thatcher. He puts the love of Christ and a life for others in focus. Mark Jordan is the last model and is working with the Christian tradition from a queer perspective. The work and life of eros, together with sexual pleasure, is what should govern sexual relations. My main objections are the idea of an essence of sexuality and a supposed connection between the same essence of sexuality and norms for relationships. Instead I suggest a strategic understanding of sexuality, where the norm of right relationships should decide how sexuality should be understood. What I propose in the constructive part of the dissertation is that a person should be understood as both having authority and responsibility. What is of importance is to pay attention and criticize social structures that prevent people to act with authority and responsibility in their intimate affairs. From the norms of Margaret Farley, I draw the importance of commitment, making authority as well as responsibility possible within relationships.
