PLASMA SHEATH CHARACTERIZATION FOR TELEMETRY IN HYPERSONIC FLIGHT

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 20-23, 2003 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / During certain hypersonic flight regimes, shock heating of air creates a plasma sheath resulting in telemetry attenuation or blackout. The severity of the signal attenuation is dependent on vehicle configuration, flight trajectory, and transmission frequency. This phenomenon is investigated with a focus placed on the nonequilibrium plasma sheath properties (electron concentration, plasma frequency, collision frequency, and temperature) for a range of flight conditions and vehicle design considerations. Trajectory and transmission frequency requirements for air-breathing hypersonic vehicle design are then addressed, with comparisons made to both shuttle orbiter and RAM-C II reentry flights.

The Impact of Micro-Surface Shaping of the Piston on the Piston/Cylinder Interface of an Axial Piston Machine

Axial piston machines of the swashplate type are commonly used in various hydraulic systems and with recent developments in displacement control, it is essential to maximize their efficiency further reducing operation costs as well as improving performance and reliability. This paper reports findings of a research study conducted for the piston-cylinder interface utilizing a novel fluid structure thermal interaction model considering solid body deformation due to thermal and pressure effects in order to accurately predict the transient fluid film within the gap. A large reduction in energy dissipation is possible due to reduced clearances allowable due to the surface shaping of the piston resulting in a reduction in leakage. From this study, it is shown that surface shaping of the piston in combination with a reduced clearance is not only beneficial by improving the efficiency of a machine, but also increases the reliability and the performance of the machine as the load support is enhanced.

PLASMA TELEMETRY IN HYPERSONIC FLIGHT

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 21, 2002 / Town & Country Hotel and Conference Center, San Diego, California / Problems associated with telemetry blackout caused by the plasma sheath surrounding a hypersonic vehicle are addressed. In particular, the critical nature of overcoming this limitation for test and evaluation purposes is detailed. Since the telemetry blackout causes great concern for atmospheric cruise vehicles, ballistic missiles, and reentry vehicles, there have been many proposed approaches to solving the problem. This paper overviews aerodynamic design methodologies, for which the required technologies are only now being realized, which may allow for uninterrupted transmission through a plasma sheath. The severity of the signal attenuation is dependent on vehicle configuration, trajectory, flightpath, and mission.

Thesis (MSc (Physics))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Through the use of complex Laser Pulse Shaping, numerous fundamental laser induced processes may be controlled as well as studied. This work serves as an introduction into Laser Pulse Shaping, with the focus on a simple Pulse Shaping experiment, as well as to determine whether future, more complex processes may be similarly controlled. A description of Laser Pulse Shaping theory is presented here, along with a full explanation of a simple experiment to maximize second harmonic generation (SHG) through Pulse Shaping. This experiment is simple on a theoretical level yet complicated in both implementation as well as operation. The experimental setup and software integration required hardware compatibility in multiple programming languages. This work was successful in the sense that a fully automated dispersion compensation system, accomplished through the use of a genetic algorithm in a feedback controlled loop, was constructed and tested. The success of this experiment and the understanding gained in this work has laid the foundation for further complex Pulse Shaping systems to be achieved in future. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Komplekse Laserpuls-vervorming kan gebruik word om verskeie fundamentele laser-geinduseerde prosesse beide te beheer asook te bestudeer. Hierdie navorsingstuk dien as n inleiding tot Laserpuls-vervorming, spesifiek gefokus op n eenvoudige Pulsvervormings-eksperiment. Meer komplekse Pulsvervormingsopstellings kan toegepas word deur die kennis opgedoen in hierdie tesis. Die teoretiese agtergrond van Laserpuls-vervormings word bespreek, tesame met n eenvoudige eksperiment om die Tweede Harmoniek Skeppingsproses (SHG) te maksimeer deur van Laserpuls-vervorming gebruik te maak. Die eksperiment is teoreties eenvoudig, waar die implimentering asook bedryf meer kompleks is. Die bedryf van die eksperiment word in 2 dele hanteer: die hoofprogram en n Genetiese Algoritme gebruik in optimering. Die werking van Genetiese Algoritmes asook Ultrakort Pulse (USPs) en pulskarakterisering word ook bespreek. Die suksesvolle opstelling van die experiment en ook die eind resultate wat gevind is, maak dit moontlik om meer ingewikkeld komplekse laserpulsvervorming experimente te bestudeer.

Design of the dual-shaped triple layer pillbox antenna

Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The triple layer pillbox antenna is an antenna topology well suited for use as a stackable "plank" element in radar applications. Its suitability arises from the folding which makes it compact, and from the layered nature which can be exploited for low cost manufacture. Existing designs of these "cheese" antennas, whether two or three layers, suff er from two drawbacks: a) The bend or fold between layers introduces undesirable reflections and b) Due to their parabolic sector geometry virtually no pattern control is available to the designer. This work addresses both of these shortcomings. A low reflection transition is realized by introducing simple compensating elements into the design which, with minimal manufacturing complexity, off er high performance over a broad frequency and incidence angle range. To cater for pattern control the concept of "dual shaped reflectors" is borrowed from the high performance dish antenna literature and implemented in the pillbox geometry. This shaping off ers limited but useful control of the aperture distribution and thus indirectly over the radiation pattern. To test these innovations three X-band antennas have been designed, built and measured. An initial unshaped geometry is used for the fi rst design to show the fold or bend performance. This antenna has a simulated and measured 2GHz usable bandwidth, with a reflection coeffi cient below -10dB and side-lobes below -27dB over a bandwidth in excess of 20%. Shaping is then added to show how either side-lobe levels can be lowered to below -32dB, or the gain enhanced by 2dB. The enhanced designs have been built and experimentally veri fied. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die drie-dubbel gevoude pildoos antenna is `n antenna topologie wat goed gepas is vir die gebruik as `n stapelbare "plank" element vir radar aanwending. Novel Nonlinear Microscopy Techniques Based on Femtosecond Laser Pulse Shaping and Their Applications

<p>Nonlinear optical microscopy serves as a great tool for biomedical imaging due to its high resolution, deep penetration, inherent three dimensional optical sectioning capabilities and superior performance in scattering media. Conventional nonlinear optical microscopy techniques, e.g. two photon fluorescence and second harmonic generation, are based on detecting a small light signal emitted at a new wavelength that is well separated from the excitation light. However, there are also many other nonlinear processes, such as two-photon absorption and self-phase modulation, that do not generate light at new wavelengths and that have not been extensively explored for imaging. This dissertation extends the accessible mechanisms for contrast to the later nonlinear optical processes by combining femtosecond laser pulse shaping and homodyne detection. We developed a rapid pulse shaper with a relatively simple and compact instrument design that modifies the spectrum of individual laser pulses from an 80 MHz mode-locked laser. The pulse shaper enables simultaneous two-photon absorption and self-phase modulation imaging of various nanoparticles in-vitro with high sensitivity. We also applied this imaging technique to study the nonlinear optical response in graphene. Because our technology detects the nonlinear signature encoded within the laser pulse itself, we achieve intrinsic contrast of biological and non-biological samples in highly scattering media. These capabilities have significant implications in biomedical imaging and nanophotonics.</p> / Dissertation

A Comparison of the Effects of Errorful and Errorless Teaching Methods on the Acquisition, Generalization, and Retention of Letter Sound Discriminations in Young Children.

The present study compared the effects of an errorless stimulus shaping procedure to an errorful fluency based procedure for teaching difficult letter sound discriminations using a counterbalanced multielement experimental design. For 2 participants, letters fsteai were taught using the errorless procedure and letters bpdvou were taught using the errorful procedure. For the other 2 participants the conditions were reversed. All participants had considerably fewer errors and fewer trials to criterion with the errorless than with the errorful procedure. Tests of retention and generalization indicate that the errorful procedure generalized and was retained at a higher frequency than the errorless procedure. For 3 participants preference for the errorless procedure over the errorful procedure was demonstrated; whereas, the fourth participant demonstrated preference for the errorful procedure.

An 8-Step Program: Shaping and Fixed-Time Food Delivery Effects on Several Approximations and Undesired Responses in Goats.

This study investigated the effects of a shaping program for halter training across 8 steps in the program and 4 trial-terminating, or "undesirable," responses. Three La Mancha goats (Capra hircus) located at the Frank Buck Zoo in Gainesville, Texas were used for the study. A fixed-time 15 s (FT-15 s) was used during the baseline conditions, to examine the effects of response contingent and response-independent food deliveries, as well as to examine what preliminary steps might not necessarily have to be shaped. All 3 goats successfully learned to allow the halter to be placed on them and to lead on the halter, although 2 of the 3 goats required an additional task analysis for the fifth step to further break down that approximation. Several of the early steps selected by the researchers were not necessary to complete the program, as determined by the baseline condition.

Traditionally children with developmental disabilities who develop feeding issues can be at great risk for malnutrition. Failure to eat adequate amounts of food and/or insistence on eating a limited range of foods can be detrimental to a child's health and can lead to other behavioral difficulties. Feeding problems are difficult to treat because high levels of physical prompting can quickly create an aversion to eating as well as cause stress for both parents and children. Behavioral problems that range from moderate to extremely maladaptive can ensue. The question the present study addressed was whether or not a treatment package including only positive reinforcement and fading for a non-preferred food would result in independent eating of the targeted non-preferred food.

Orientation-dependent adaptive antenna for low earth orbit satellite communications

In remote areas without conventional cellular service, satellite communication is often the only viable option. Handheld devices for use with satellite communication networks require a high transmit power to obtain a reliable signal. The need for a high transmit power makes it difficult for the device to meet specific absorption rate (SAR) restrictions. An adaptive beam forming technique for shaping radiation away from the user’s head is proposed. This technique uses a back-to-back patch antenna design with an impedance monitoring based system capable of adaptively controlling the pattern of the antenna. The adaptive antenna system was designed, simulated, fabricated, and measured. The system could detect a head phantom within 3 cm of the antenna. SAR levels were verified to be within safety restrictions at 3 cm through simulation. By turning off the patch facing the user’s head when the phone is transmitting, and the user’s head is within 3 cm, it was shown that SAR levels could be reduced to safe levels. / February 2017
