Sidelobe Suppression and Agile Transmission Techniques for Multicarrier-based Cognitive Radio Systems

Yuan, Zhou 03 May 2009 (has links)
With the advent of new high data rate wireless applications, as well as growth of existing wireless services, demand for additional bandwidth is rapidly increasing. Existing spectrum allocation policies of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) prohibits unlicensed access to licensed spectrum, constraining them instead to several heavily populated, interference-prone frequency bands, which causes spectrum scarcity. However, it has been shown by several spectrum measurement campaigns that the current licensed spectrum usage across time and frequency is inefficient. Therefore, a concept of unlicensed users temporarily ``borrowing" spectrum from incumbent license holders to improve the spectrum utilization, called ``spectrum pooling", which is based on dynamic spectrum access (DSA), is proposed. Cognitive radio is a communication paradigm that employs software-defined radio technology in order to perform DSA and offers versatile, powerful and portable wireless transceivers. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a promising candidate for cognitive radio transmission. OFDM supports high data rates that are robust to channel impairments. In addition, some subcarriers can be deactivated which constitutes a non-contiguous OFDM (NC-OFDM) transmission. However, one of the biggest problems for OFDM transmission is high out-of-band (OOB) radiation, which is caused by sinc-type function representing the symbols during one time constant. Thus, high sidelobe may occur that will interfere with neighboring transmissions. This thesis presents two novel techniques for NC-OFDM sidelobe suppression. Another concern about cognitive radio systems is that the influence of frequency-selective fading channel. Consequently, this thesis also presents a combined approach employing power loading, bit allocation and sidelobe suppression for OFDM-based cognitive radio systems optimization.

Modified Generalized Sidelobe Canceller with Inverse QRD-RLS Algorithm

Chang, Chun-Lin 11 July 2003 (has links)
The conventional temporal filtering approach cannot be used to separate signal from interference which occupies the same temporal frequency band as signal. Using a spatial filtering at the receiver can separate signals from interference that originates from different spatial location. Many adaptive array beamforming algorithms, based on linear constraints, have been proposed for suppressing undesired interference and being applied to wireless communication systems for multiuser detection. The adaptive array system can be employed to automatically adjust its directional to achieve the purpose that nulls the interferences or jammers and thus, enhances the reception of the desired signal. Inverse QR Decomposition Recursive Least-square (IQRD-RLS) algorithm has many advantages such as where the LS weight vector be computed without back substitution, a well known numerical stable algorithm and offering better convergence rate, steady-state means-square error, and parameter tracking capability over the adaptive least mean square (LMS) based algorithms. In this thesis, a new application, GSC-IQRD-RLS combining Generalized Sidelobe Canceller (GSC) and IQRD-RLS algorithm, is developed. It preserves the advantages of GSC such as simple structure, less computations, and converts a linearly constrained optimization problem into a standard optimum filtering problem. But the performance is equivalent between GSC-IQRD-RLS and LC-IQRD-RLS algorithms.

Hardware Implementation of Filtering Based Sidelobe Suppression for Spectrally Agile Multicarrier based Cognitive Radio Systems

Sail, Amit P 11 January 2013 (has links)
Due to the ever increasing dependency on existing wireless technologies and the growing usage of sophisticated wireless devices, the demand for bandwidth is rising exponentially. Also, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has reserved a considerable amount of spectrum for licensed users. As a result, the unlicensed spectrum usage is constrained to the overcrowded unlicensed spectrum. Various spectral management surveys have indicated inefficient spectrum utilization in the licensed spectral bands. The congested unlicensed spectrum and inefficiently used licensed frequency bands calls for an approach to use the available spectrum opportunistically. Therefore, the concept of "Spectrum Pooling", which is based on Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA), was proposed to make the unused sections of licensed spectrum available to the unlicensed users. In Spectrum Pooling, an empty section of licensed spectrum is borrowed by a secondary user for certain period of time without interfering with the licensed user. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a transmission scheme that is a candidate for Spectrum Pooling since it is capable of forming an adaptive spectral shape that allows coexistence of licensed and unlicensed users while attemting to minimize any interference. Subcarriers in the OFDM signal can be deactivated to generate Non-Contiguous OFDM (NC-OFDM). Even though NC-OFDM allows efficient use of available spectrum, it causes out of band (OOB) radiation, which adversely affects the performance of adjacent user. This thesis presents two novel techniques for combat the effects of OOB radiation generated by NC-OFDM. The proposed techniques employ a filtering-based approach combined with the technique of windowing in order to suppress the unwanted sidelobes by around 35dB-40dB. The attenuation is achieved without affecting other transmission parameters of the secondary user significantly.

Adaptive Beamforming Using a Microphone Array for Hands-Free Telephony

Campbell, David Kemp 23 February 1999 (has links)
This thesis describes the design and implementation of a 4-channel microphone array that is an adaptive beamformer used for hands-free telephony in a noisy environment. The microphone signals are amplified, then sent to an A/D converter. The microprocessor board takes the data from the 4 channels and utilizes digital signal processing to determine the direction-of-arrival of the sources and create an output which 'steers' the microphone array to the desired look direction while trying to minimize the energy of interference sources and noise. All of the processing for this thesis will be done on a computer using MATLAB. The MUSIC algorithm is used for direction finding in this thesis. It is shown to be effective in estimating direction-of-arrival for 1 speech source and 2 speech sources that are spaced fairly apart, with significant results down to a -5 dB SNR even. The MUSIC algorithm requires knowledge of the number of sources a priori, requiring an estimator for the number of sources. Though proposed estimators for the number of sources were examined, an effective estimator was not encountered for the case where there are multiple speech sources. Beamforming methods are examined which utilize knowledge of the source direction-of-arrival from the MUSIC algorithm. The input is split into 6 subbands such that phase-steered beamforming would be possible. Two methods of phase-steered beamforming are compared in both narrowband and wideband scenarios, and it is shown that phase-steering the array to the desired source direction-of-arrival has about 0.3 dB better beamforming performance than the simple time-delay steered beamformer using no subbands. As the beamforming solution is inadequate to achieve desired results, a generalized sidelobe canceler (GSC) is developed which incorporates a beamformer. The sidelobe canceler is evaluated using both NLMS and RLS adaptation. The RLS algorithm inherently gives better results than the NLMS algorithm, though the computational complexity renders the solution impractical for implementation with today's technology. A testing setup is presented which involves a linear 4-microphone array connected to a DSP chip that collects the data. Tests were done using 1 speech source and a model of the car noise environment. The sidelobe canceler's performance using 6 subbands (phase-delay GSC) and using 1 band (time-delay GSC) with NLMS updating are compared. The overall SNR improvement is determined from the signal and noise input and output powers, with signal-only as the input and noise-only as the input to the GSC. The phase-delay GSC gives on average 7.4 dB SNR improvement while the time-delay GSC gives on average 6.2 dB SNR improvement. / Master of Science

New Low-Complexity Space-time Coded MIMO-CDMA System Design With Semi- blind Channel Estimation in Multipath Channel

Hung, Yu-Chian 27 August 2010 (has links)
In this thesis, we present a new low-complexity receiver with the modified hybrid signature direct-sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) system framework that use the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antennas along with Alamouti¡¦s space-time block code (ST-BC). In the transceiver, the modified hybrid signature is exploited. It is not only used to counteract the inter-symbol interference (ISI) introduced by the channel fading duo to multipath propagation but also very useful for extracting the full channel information in the receiver. For reducing computational complexity, we propose a new modified partial adaptivity (MPA) filter. It is not only having the advantage of subspace-based PA-GSC filter to enhance the system performance but also avoid the computation requirement when the Eigen-decomposition approach was adopted. Next, with the modified transceiver framework, in the receiver, based on the linearly constrained constant modulus (LCCM) criterion, we propose a novel semi-blind multiple detector schemes for MIMO-CDMA systems, which is implementing with the adaptive RLS algorithm and framework in the modified partially adaptive (MPA) generalized sidelobe canceller (GSC) . Our proposed scheme is able to perform the two-branch filterbank of LCCM MIMO-CDMA receiver. Computer simulations demonstrate that the proposed receiver has better performance than the convention CM-GSC-RLS receiver with much lower computational load.

Pseudo Random Cyclic Postfix ST-BC MIMO-OFDM Systems with GSC-Based Equalizer

Tsai, Meng-Han 27 August 2011 (has links)
The Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technique has been intensively used in many wireless communication systems to achieve higher data rate transmissions. Due to the fact that the OFDM technique entails redundant block transmissions; the transmitted blocks suffer from the inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-block interference (IBI). To compensate this serious effect, in many literatures redundant symbols (or guard interval) with adequate length are inserted in the transmitted symbols to prevent the IBI. Also, in the receiver the equalizer can be employed to deal with ISI. In this thesis, we present a new pseudo random cyclic-postfix (PRCP-) OFDM associated with the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna system configuration to further improve the system performance. In fact, the MIMO system can enhance channel capacity and achieve high data-rate. The above-mentioned PRCP-OFDM technique combines with the MIMO antennas system, through the appropriate model design can be used to combat the multi-path effect or the inter-block interference. As evident from the simulation results, the proposed ST-BC MIMO PRCP-OFDM system can avoid the interference of transmitted signals during the estimation of channel impulse response (CIR) with proposed cyclic-postfix sequences. In addition, to further improve and eliminate the residual IBI and ICI, the equalizer with the framework of the generalized sidelobe canceller (GSC) is considered. Specifically, when SNR grows, the proposed ST-BC MIMO PRCP-OFDM system can perform successfully in terms of symbol-error rate and semi-blind channel estimation. This is verified via the computer simulations.

Successive Target Cancelation For Radar Waveform Sidelobe Reduction

Haliloglu, Onur 01 September 2006 (has links) (PDF)
Many radars suffer from masking of weaker targets by stronger ones due to range sidelobes of pulse compression codes. We propose a method to prevent this by successively detecting targets and canceling their effects. Performance of the proposed method will be investigated in various scenarios with regard to existence of noise, targets, and the Doppler effect.
