_______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The ant behavior can be used as a metaphor to improve web systems performance. The present Internet browse tools embody user that can be assumed as ants foraging process. But different from the ants, Internet users don’t have pheromone for a cooperative help. Based in this observation and because of lack of research work that has as objective to guide web user through optimized routes this research was developed. In this research we present AntWeb. This research was divided in two different application of AntWeb: The AntWeb for evaluation of websites and the adaptive AntWeb. In relation to the AntWeb for evaluation of websites, an evaluation methodology was developed and implemented. In this case the input is the structure of a website and as output a measure of performance of the structure is computed. In relation to the adaptive AntWeb, two heuristic models had been developed to guide the web user in a context of adaptive hypermedia that we named model 1 and model 2. Model 1 was implemented and tested in UnB Department of Computer Sciences website. With model 2 simulations had been done to show of the optimized form that AntWeb could assist web users. The main objective of these simulations is to test the research work developed with the AntWeb.

School site decision making : a case study of the Edmonton experience

Lam, Lan Yong January 1988 (has links)
School-Site Decision-Making (SSDM) has been widely discussed in Canada and the United States. The decision to implement SSDM represents a major departure from the traditional authority structure. It requires the concurrence of many key parties such as teachers, principals and school officials. Proponents believe that SSDM can help to improve the quality of schooling by giving more flexibility in curriculum content and deployment of instructional resources. It is for these reasons that the authorities in Singapore have been exploring various innovations which can help to improve the school system. One of the most talked-about SSDM projects is the one launched by the Edmonton Public School Board in 1976. It is widely regarded as the "lighthouse" system of SSDM. This report describes the studies carried out on two schools in the Edmonton system. One was a K-9 community school, the other a senior high comprehensive school. The case studies examined what happens when a major innovation such as SSDM is introduced - what the problems are, how they are solved, and to what extent the goals are achieved. / Education, Faculty of / Educational Studies (EDST), Department of / Graduate

Still Creek interpretation facility

Boothroyd, Gregory Stephen 05 1900 (has links)
This thesis explores the notion of site as a generative basis for architecture. Site is conceived not only as a plot of land where a building is located, but also as something that is the result of agency: the architectural intervention. Site is thus constructed with architecture; it is as much a consequence as a thing. Still Creek was chosen as a provocative site in which to explore this idea. Once Vancouver's largest salmon-bearing stream. Still Creek now exists in a barren, degraded state — the result of a century of urbanization. In its fragmented course from its headwaters to Burnaby Lake, Still Creek flows above and below ground through a diversity of site conditions, ranging from a primeval ravine to a polluted industrial area. Recently, sensibilities about the stream have changed. There are presently a variety of groups interested in Still Creek, not only as a public amenity, but also as an urban ecosystem. In response, it was proposed that (1) an urban trail be located along the discontinuous course of the stream, and (2) a facility be located along the stream that addresses some of the needs of these interested groups. The Still Creek Interpretive Facility marks both the beginning of the stream and the start of the urban trail. Located at the edge of the Renfrew Ravine where the stream first emerges from a subterranean culvert, the building makes apparent the many forces present on the site. An initial gesture of excavation reveals the culvert and demarcates a constructed and a natural edge. The constructed edge of the excavation is heightened with a veil of translucent solar panels that diffuse sunlight and help power the building. A wood screen along the natural edge of the excavation acts as a foil to the alder forest, allowing the building to maintain a quiet presence in the ravine as well as creating shimmering views of colour and light. The stream fills the lowest part of the excavation, mitigating high runoff flows and making a reflective pool for light, precipitation, and sound. The excavation and screen walls form a vessel into which mute volumes are inserted, creating a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces, some relating more to site, others relating more to programme. Exterior building circulation winds through the whole assembly — an extension of the urban trail — forming a rich experiential descent from street...through building...to stream beyond... / Applied Science, Faculty of / Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA), School of / Graduate

EVALUATING EVALUATION: A STATISTICAL INVESTIGATION OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE SAMPLING

Unknown Date (has links)
The evaluation of archaeological sites is an essential, routine, and commonplace part of archaeological practice. Evaluation is usually a preliminary step carried out prior to a decision about preservation, destruction, or more intensive investigation. In most cases, archaeologists sample sites when conducting evaluations, often to reduce the cost of the research, but also to minimize the adverse effects to sites that may be significant. The literature on sampling in archaeology, with a few noteworthy exceptions, does not address critical issues concerning how much to sample to achieve a valid and reliable evaluation of a site, or, alternatively, how much material must be recovered for that same purpose. This thesis studies the spatial and numerical distributions of ceramic material recovered from three prehistoric archaeological sites that have undergone several phases of intensive testing to understand the variables that influence effective sample sizes for evaluation. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2020. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Pewa, Ngami Phumzile Isabella January 2014 (has links)
A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Arts in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of African Languages and Culture at the University of Zululand, South Africa, 2014. / This document consists of eight chapters which are as follow: Chapter One : is an introductory part where the establishment and historical background of Lamontville is discussed. It is the general introduction of the research topic where the following topics form part of the research proposal. These include: introduction, statement of research problem, purpose of the study, delimitation of the study, research methodology, beneficiaries of the research, structure of the chapters and conclusion. Chapter Two : is where the term heritage will be defined and discussed at length. The importance of heritage and preservation of history in general will be discussed and data about Lamontville will be collected. Hostels as the first form of accommodation which was available to black workers will be touched upon. Chesterville as well as Baumanville (eKwatasi) will be mentioned. Chapter Three : is where the preservation of history and heritage of Lamontville citizens will be discussed. The researcher will also identify heroes and heroines of Lamontville. These include Cothoza Junerose Nontsikelelo, Dube Msizi, Mkhize Florence, Msimang George, Sithole Dalton Jacob Skhumbuzo and Cynthia Shange. Chapter Four : is where the evolution, growth and development of life of Lamontville into a township will be discussed. The term township will be defined. The researcher will also look at the first houses of Lamontville, sports and recreation and schools. The transport system in Lamontville and administration including community structures of Lamontville as a township will be touched upon. iv Chapter Five : is where health and welfare facilities of Lamanotville will be looked at. The researcher will take a closer look at the Issy Geshen Lamontville Home for the Aged and Thembalethu Care Centre. The importance of social responsibility will be discussed. Chapter Six : is where the researcher will look at the old and new street names in the eThekwini Municipality in general and street names of Lamontville in particular. The objections to new street names will be highlighted. The researcher will also analyse data about houses and schools in Lamontville. Chapter Seven : is where the researcher will look at ways of collecting data as well as interviewees/sources. A naturalistic approach of gathering information will be used. Information will be, therefore be gathered by means of interviews, questionnaires, photographic method and recordings. Chapter Eight : is where the researcher will look at the assumption that those who were involved in the building of the new democratic South Africa should be acknowledged and that such contributions be recorded. The researcher will also recommend that Lamontville should be properly linked to the KwaZulu-Natal liberation heritage route because of the role this township played in building the new South Africa.

Tracking down gene intefrity within fragile sites: Do they play a role in oesoplageal cancer?

Brown, Jacqueline 16 November 2006 (has links)
Faculty of Science School of Pathology 9900713m Cell #: 083 718 9093 / Oesophageal cancer (OC) is the third most common malignancy in South Africa (SA), affecting 1 in 20 and 1 in 76 black males and females respectively. Squamous cell carcinoma (SSC) is an aggressive disease showing a poor prognosis due to late diagnosis. Identification of genetic changes associated with these tumours may shed light on its pathophysiology and aetiology in SA. The chromosomal status of five OC cell lines, established in SA, was assessed to identify possible common chromosomal alterations by M-FISH (multicolour fluorescence in situ hybridisation) and specifically the fragile site loci, FRA3B and FRA16D by FISH (Fluorescence in situ hybridisation). The genes at these loci, FHIT (Fragile Histidine Triad) and WWOX (WW domain containing oxidoreductase) respectively, were analysed by RT-PCR (Reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction). FHIT was aberrantly expressed in four of the five cell lines while WWOX expression was normal. The EGFR (epidermal growth factor receptor) locus is frequently amplified and this gene is also over-expressed in OC. Increased EGFR expression was previously found in three of the cell lines, for this reason, particular attention was paid to markers involving the EGFR locus on 7p. An interesting marker chromosome seven was identified in one of the cell lines and further analysis, using a specific EGFR probe, revealed an amplification unit involving EGFR in this cell line. Common translocations involving chromosomes 3 and 1 as well as 3 and 22 were identified in two cell lines; these may involve a locus involved in OC and warrants further investigation.
