Evaluating and enhancing websites : a case study of an Eritrean state owned media website - shabait.com

Mahmoud, Siham Mukhtar 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Ministry of Information of Eritrea is basically aimed at providing the society with news, information, education and entertainment. In addition to its service presentation through radio, TV and printed press the Ministry of Information has taken the initiative to present its services in the digital way by publishing a website known as shabait.com. But as the technique is new to the country as well as to the organization, it is to be expected that there will be inaccuracies in the way the website was designed. Hence, evaluating and redesigning shabait.com with the goal of making it informative, attractive and easy to use will be very beneficial to the organization as well as to users of the website. This recently launched website is not very attractive and not successfully directed to its users. Therefore, the main aim of this study is to assess and find the best way of presenting information digitally to the Eritrean society, as well as to anyone interested in finding out about Eritrea through the State owned media website. This study was firstly approached by gathering previously written relevant information from books, journals, and the Internet. In addition to that interviews with concerned people in Eritrea were held to understand the aim, difficulties and challenges of the website. Subsequently the website was assessed according to the evaluation criteria developed, based on the literature review. The evaluation of the website assumed three different approaches of qualitative as well as quantitative types. A usability test with both quantitative and qualitative questions was done through a questionnaire, which was analyzed statistically. A competitive analysis, of qualitative type with two international websites was also made. In order to create a good quality website, it is essential to have clearly specified goals, policies and strategies, and adequate advanced human as well as technological resources, so that it will be easy to overcome the common challenges such as competition, diversity of users, budget constraints, and inadequacy of policy instruments. The findings of the evaluation of shabait.com indicate that the website is not attractive, is user unfriendly, of low content quality as well as with low download speed and, more importantly, was not advertised well. Therefore, shabait.com is not fit to be considered as a sole first hand information provider website for the Eritrean society as well as for anybody who is concerned about Eritrea. At the end of the study recommendations of how the website can be modified to be successful are listed.

This thesis regards the proposal of a model and guidelines for design process of adaptive web interface (PDIWA), they were development to guide and to assist the web interface designer during the design process. The model describes schematically a iterative process with five stages: analysis, concept, development, prototype and test. Eight guidelines about the configuration and requirements of adaptation techniques were established to give support to model. Designers that composed a sample applied the model and guidelines during the development of interface for #Everybody is Different# adaptive web site (research project supported by CNPq - proclamation no 61/2005). The designers that don#t known the Adaptive Systems area, they were capable to develop the interface for adaptive web; thus, it was observed that model and guidelines for PDIWA fulfilled its function.

xv, 155 p. : ill. (some col.), maps. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / This thesis provides new ways to understand preservation theory and management objectives for industrial heritage sites by analyzing existing mechanisms for their preservation through values and practices associated with cultural landscape preservation. In addition to discussing the theory and development of existing preservation approaches to cultural landscapes and industrial heritage sites, the study identifies characteristics and values aimed at expanding the framework of historic industrial landscape preservation practice. Using case studies of western hard-rock mining landscapes as the primary examples, the study argues that management strategies based on traditional preservation practices are insufficient for interpreting the complexity of these historic places, and that historic industrial landscape preservation is best served by attending to the range of values and processes associated with the historic landscape and its protection. In the World Wide Web context, each published Web site has an inherent preocupation with the way in which it will be manipulated by the user. Independent of the Web site size and project, there was someone responsible to offer ways for accessing the information presented. This preocupation guides ali the process of a Web site design and at the end it will be dissolved, be coming invisible to the user. This work intends to research and to consider about how the conscient utilization of the available resources, the information structure and clear content organization, the logicand concise navigation systems and the use of a transparent and intuitive interface can result in a better use of the Web site by the user. In order to verify the aplicability of the investigated concepts, a corporative Web site was developed bya practical project based in a case study / Mestrado / Mestre em Multimeios

Efeitos de sentidos em sites de pesquisa: condições de produção do discurso eletrônico / Effects of senses on search sites: conditions of production of electronic discourse.

Daiana de Oliveira Faria 07 August 2012 (has links)
Given the discourses driven by the insertion of information and communication technologies (ICTs), especially the Internet, we intend to observe the discursive functioning of the Google search engine, considering some of the tools offered by this search engine. That said, we will carry out search about the significants \"Dilma Rousseff\" and \"Marina Silva\", catching the game of memory discursive about these names, especially in the period corresponding to 2010 election campaign. For this purpose, will mobilize the conceptual assumptions of discourse analysis of the French headquarters, especially since the work of Michel Pecheux, to interpret the modes of production, creation and circulation of discourse peculiar to this materiality, which is the electronic media. We believe that such materiality is elevated under conditions of production that rages to do and gives the character of the rhizomatic functioning of the language.

Characteristics of prolactin binding to rat liver plasma membranes

Silverstein, Alan Michael January 1978 (has links)
Binding sites for prolactin have been identified and characterized in a plasma membrane enriched fraction isolated from livers of mature female rats. By chemical and enzymatic analysis the membrane preparation was shown to have slight contamination with nuclei and endoplasmic reticulum, while mitochondria were not detected. Sidedness analysis indicated that the membrane preparation was largely composed of inside-out vesicles. ¹²⁵I-oPRL prepared by the lactoperoxidase method had a specific activity of 40-60 μCi/μg. Competition studies using iodoprolactin indicated that iodination of the hormone did not affect its affinity for the receptor as compared to the native hormone. Binding of ¹²⁵I-oPRL was inhibited by prolactin from various species including ovine, bovine and rat prolactin while bGH, pACTH and AVP had no effect on binding. The binding of 125 I-oPRL was activated by both bivalent and monovalent cations - bivalent cations exerting a greater effect than monovalent cations. In the presence of 10 mM CaCl₂, binding of ¹²⁵I-oPRL was equal to the binding in the presence of the physiological concentration of NaCI. The association of ¹²⁵I-oPRL with the membrane was a time and temperature dependent process, being maximal at 37°. The dissociation of ¹²⁵I-oPRL was time and temperature dependent only with 150 mM NaCl at 37° while at all other temperatures and in the presence of 10 mM CaCl₂ dissociation was not.observed. The binding of ¹²⁵I-oPRL was strongly influenced by pH with an optimum observed at pH 6.5. Receptor activity was destroyed by pronase and phospholipase C, while neuraminidase increased binding. Treatment of the membranes by RNase and DNase did not effect the binding. Binding of ¹²⁵I-oPRL was inhibited by p-chloromercuribenzoic acid, dithiothreitol, and by brief exposure to high temperatures. Scatchard analysis of the binding of ¹²⁵I-oPRL to receptors indicates that prolactin has a high affinity for its receptor / Medicine, Faculty of / Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Department of / Graduate

A dynamic model of usage behavior and network effects in social network sites

Ahn, Dae-Yong 03 June 2010 (has links)
This paper structurally estimates a dynamic model of usage behavior and network effects in a social network site using data from MySpace.com. We view a social network as a stock of capital that yields a flow of utilities over time by creating social interactions between the owner and her friends. When one decides to use a social network site, it may have two distinct network effects: (1) one can manage an existing base of friends through social networking and thus prevent depreciation of capital stock (maintenance effect), and (2) one may acquire new friends through social networking, which results in creation of new capital stock (investment effect). Thus, we model social networking as a dynamic process, in which one's current action to use a social network site can influence the evolution of her social network. We found that realtime chat and messaging, features of MySpace.com, positively affect one's usage decision and hence achieve the intended goal of generating site traffic. However, different demographic groups may have idiosyncratic preferences for these features. Based on parameter estimates, we performed counterfactual simulations with the goal of providing managers with ways to enhance firm performance. / text
