The Snare Drum as a Solo Concert Instrument: An In-Depth Study of Works by Milton Babbitt, John Cage, Dan Senn, and Stuart Saunders Smith, Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works by Keiko Abe, Daniel Levitan, Askell Masson, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and OthersBaker, Jason Colby 12 1900 (has links)
This dissertation discusses the potential of the snare drum as a solo concert instrument. Four pieces from a collection entitled The Noble Snare are used for demonstration ("Homily" by Milton Babbitt, "Composed Improvisation for Snare Drum" by John Cage, "Peeping Tom" by Dan Senn, and "The Noble Snare" by Stuart Saunders Smith). In the absence of many traditional musical devices (i.e. melody and harmony), alternative means of expression are used by the composer. Each piece is discussed with regard to its distinctive compositional approach and inherent performance issues. Information is also given pertaining to the background of the Noble Snare series. This includes: the inspiration for the project, editorial issues, and its influence on snare drum performance. Much of this research was completed through interviews by with author with Sylvia Smith, publisher of The Noble Snare and owner of Smith Publications.

Classification of snare drum sounds using neural networksTindale, Adam January 2004 (has links)
The development of computer algorithms for music instrument identification and parameter extraction in digital audio signals is an active research field. A musician can listen to music and instantly identify different instruments and the timbres produced by various playing techniques. Creating software to allow computers to do the same is much more challenging. This thesis will use digital signal processing and machine learning techniques to differentiate snare drum timbres produced by different stroke positions and stroke techniques.

This work starts from the initial understanding that the study of the snare drum is the foundation of the drum study. Thus, we propose the study of the rhythm and interpretation of samba by studies and pieces of snare drum. The compositional work is guided by concepts already developed by musicology on the performance of samba in dialogue with the data gathered by the author through interviews with carioca samba players, the transcriptions and the musical pratice experienced by the researcher during the research process. At the end of the work, studies and related pieces has as the main goals to explore the development of the phrasing, the sticking and the exploration of tones on the snare drum based on the idiomatic aspects of the samba characteristic instruments of percussion / Mestrado / Praticas Interpretativas / Mestre em Música

Bohuslav Martinu: An Examination of Selected Chamber Music Involving the ClarinetWalzel, Robert L. 12 1900 (has links)
The discussion dealt with stylistic influences, compositional techniques, and performance considerations of chamber music involving clarinet composed by Bohuslav Martinu and included a performance of three of his works: Quartet. for clarinet, horn, cello, and side drum, Madrigals for oboe, clarinet, and bassoon, and Sextet for flute, oboe, clarinet, two bassoons, and piano. The selections performed and discussed in the lecture show compositional growth of the composer through the three periods of his life in which he composed chamber music which included winds. These three time periods are 1923-40 during his residency in Paris, 1941-56 during his residency in the United States, and 1957 until his death in 1959 when he returned permanently to Europe.
