Mass Logistics Centres and Social Impacts : Investigating the Challenges and Solutions in Urban Residential Areas / Masslogistikcentra och sociala effekter : Undersöka utmaningarna och lösningarna i urbana bostadsområden

Brandt, Barbara Iwona January 2024 (has links)
Addressing the amount of construction and demolition waste (CDW) is crucial for transitioning into a sustainable and circular economy, and therefore supports reaching climate neutrality in the European Union by the year 2050. One important solution for CDW recovery is placing mass logistic centres (MLCs) near construction projects. MLCs contribute to reducing environmental emissions, improving transport efficiency, and increasing economic benefits. However, when MLCs are built in proximity to residential areas they are often associated with a negative social impact. The present study aims to develop a strategy to improve planning processes and design for MLCs to have a positive impact on local communities. The research is done through case studies of existing MLCs near residential areas, using public surveys and focus group workshops. The data shows that the residents’ main concerns are environmental impacts and safety, noise and pollution levels, disturbances from heavy traffic, and disturbances to places' identity and facilities' aesthetics. The study concludes that the most important aspects of a more considerate MLC design are maintaining open and inclusive communication with the local community during early planning stages as well as during construction and operations, considering and responding to the residents’ concerns, as well as gaining an understanding of the place's identity. As this is a novel topic within the field, more extensive research is required to further investigate both challenges and solutions for local communities related to MLCs being located near their residential areas.

The Platinum Boom in Rustenburg and the Bust of the Community : A case study of the Natural Resource Curse in South Africa

Lagercrantz, Hedvig, Khabbaz, Shima January 2019 (has links)
The dependence on natural resources is not a new phenomenon and it has posed issues in undiversified economies. The social impact that the booming of the mining industry has on the local level is still an area in need of investigation. The case study seeks to understand how the platinum mines of the boomtown Rustenburg have impacted the local social fabrics through 22 qualitative interviews in Rustenburg. The city is situated on the North West Province Platinum Belt and produces half of the world's platinum. The boom in the platinum industry is responsible for Rustenburg's influx of people and economic growth. The analysis adopts the assumptions of the Linear Model of the Social Disruption theory and the Psychological Process of the Place Person Process Framework. The central assumption of the Linear Model is that population growth and population density leads to the informal ties of the population being weakened. Meanwhile, the psychological process assumes that groups and individuals relate to a place through psychological interaction. The study finds that the boom of the platinum industry has disrupted the social fabric through a loss in informal ties and the phenomenon of broken families has become common. The influx of people in a combination of weak institutions has led to an unhealthy society where unemployment and the crime rates are high and people are suffering from bad health conditions. It is understood that mining has changed the attitudes of the people toward Rustenburg, and has created a mining mentality. The study contributes to the understanding of the social impact of the resource curse on a local level by investigating how booms in mining industries impact the social fabric on a local level and how the impact is expressed locally. The empirical findings of the study can be beneficial for local stakeholders of Rustenburg with the purpose of improving local policies.

From the analysis of this case, we evaluated the way how small towns of traditional features are swallowed by the capitalist economic system. The study was carried out by the experiences of residents and workers in the town of Salva Terra II, which were removed from the area. For this purpose, we use the theoretical framework of the Socio-Historical Psychology, which conceives the subject as a result of his historical and social context. From the analysis of the results obtained, we can see the impacts both in symbolic relations and in the objective reality of the affected individuals, thus indicating the need for prior planning of mitigation measures to be taken by GPI in traditional communities affected / A presente pesquisa tem como tema central a análise dos impactos sociais nos trabalhadores rurais do município de Bacabeira-MA causados pelo início da obra de construção de um Grande Projeto de Investimento: a Refinaria Premium I da Petrobras.

Aiming to understand how was this relationship evolution in great Brazilian hydroelectric projects. In this context, events surveys during the construction of the Itaipu Dam served as a comparative basis for what is being experienced today in the construction of the Santo Antônio Dam. The fact is that projects of this magnitude will cause impacts and externalities, but understanding how they are being treated is something that can guide the progress of these projects management. Therefore issues such as the preservation of fauna and flora, resettlement and local development, were put on the agenda to verify how today, even with the advance of technology and external pressures on the sustainability issue, the externalities of those projects are still same. The theories presented in Corporate Social Responsibility, sustainable and economic development, in addition to social movements structuring, will serve as basis for understanding the presented issues. It was identified that the sacrifice of a few for the enjoyment of others continues to be one of the main issues to be resolved, and in this we can include the land issue. As well as the non-integration between stakeholders and shareholders to achieve alignment on the best way to enjoy and interact with the environment in which the project will be inserted, the political exclusion of stakeholders on the decision-making process of hydropower projects to be implemented, are also identified.

Sociální dopady katastrof a jejich řešení / Social impacts of disasters and their solutions

BOŽOVSKÁ, Vladimíra January 2011 (has links)
This diploma thesis on social impacts of disasters and their solutions deals with disasters that have accompanied the mankind from the very beginning, their impacts and the effective solutions of such impacts. The theoretical section, in the first chapter, introduces the concept of disaster and it describes disasters that struck the Earth in the past and endangered substantially human lives. The second chapter is devoted to disasters of the 21st century and is divided into two parts. The first part of the second chapter deals with disasters of the 21st century in the world, including the current situation in Japan and the other part introduces major disasters of the 21st century in our country. The third chapter of the theoretical section focuses on the characteristics of basic disasters that may occur in the Czech Republic. The fourth chapter informs us about the impact and consequences of extraordinary events and crisis situations in the Czech Republic and about their solutions. This chapter introduces us to the way the Czech Republic addresses social impacts of disasters, which are an important factor in determining the seriousness of disasters. The concept of social impacts of disasters includes not only the loss of life or property, but also reduced ability of self-support of people affected by disasters caused by closing down businesses and their decreased work ability. The last chapter of the theoretical section, chapter five, deals with the role and responsibilities of state authorities and local governments during extraordinary events and crisis situations. This thesis aims at specifying social impacts of disasters and to propose some solutions. The results of quantitative research using questionnaire survey showed that we can confirm working hypothesis no. one, i.e. that one of the major impacts of disasters are social impacts. The thesis also includes research conducted using the method of guided interviews thanks to which we can confirm the second working hypothesis, i.e. that dealing with the impact takes place mostly in the reconstruction period after the crisis situation. Knowledge obtained while working on this thesis may serve as a comprehensive analysis of the current state of the Czech Republic in terms of dealing with social impacts of disasters.

No. of bitstreams: 1 JulienneLSG_DISSERT.pdf: 3129741 bytes, checksum: 01fa716a863951b5f4c40aa6b43be6ae (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-02-27 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior / The conservation unities emerged in response to the environmental damages. In the Atlantic Forest of the Brazilian Northeast, the most of the damages come from the sugar-cane agro-industry, especially by the deforestation for the introduction of sugar-cane fields and installation of the industry structure. Besides the damages over the biodiversity, there are critical social problems that affect the communities which survive using directly or indirectly the biome from the Atlantic Forest. The objective of this research is to analyze the social impacts on the fishermen of Ba?a Formosa/RN generated by the changes and socio-environmental transformations occurred starting the installation of a sugar-cane factory and the creation of a conservation area in the municipality of Ba?a Formosa/RN community. The research is based on a qualitative and diachronic perspective, for both approach, it was used the method of oral history in conjunction with the literature search and some technical and research tools such as direct observation, interview, records images and recordings . The results show that social and symbolic practices of the community in the conservation unit Mata Estrela last more strongly presented. Today fewer natural resources are used, due to factors such as limit access to forest and disappearance of some natural resources by deforestation. It is believed that the loss of free access to space for the community is the most significant negative impact, as promoted changes in the relationship of the community with the Star Forest that contributed to the fading of their social and symbolic practices. The loss of free access caused the decline in the practice of agriculture, which resulted in the loss of one of the means of social reproduction of the community / As unidades de conserva??o surgiram em resposta aos danos ambientais.
