Tais lutas vinculam a conquista da Reforma Agrária ao enfrentamento contundente ao capital / Seeking to investigate the social implications of the hegemony of agribusiness in the Brazilian countryside and its relationship with the prospect of carrying out an extensive program of land reform. To this end, I develop a search on a specific case: the struggle of women of Via Campesina against the group Cosan, highlighting the tensions between two opposing designs. I analyze the issue from a theoretical framework whose central axis was defined previously in the research project. I discuss how the conservative modernization, developed during the military dictatorship, was accomplished as an answer to the question of land reform, which had been very encouraged in the previous period. Seeking to demonstrate how the conservative modernization was essential to develop the foundations of the current hegemony in the Brazilian countryside: agribusiness. In this context, the issue of land reform, as a possibility of development of capitalism in the countryside, was being overcome. Therefore, the Agrarian Reform can get a job as backwards or can be resignified, bringing new meaning to society. Both paths are facing today. To understand the movement of capital in agriculture, analyze the sugarcane industry and more specifically, the case of the merger between Cosan and Shell, who launched the creation of Raizen group. Seeking the meaning of Agrarian Reform resignified through the actions undertaken by the women of Via Campesina during the international day of women. Such struggles bind the conquest of Agrarian Reform to facing scathing capital

THE PROGRESSIVE BLOGOSPHERE AS E-MOVEMENT: IDENTITY, MOBILIZATION, AND THE USER-BASED MODEL

Hagan, Stephen Paul 01 January 2009 (has links)
Using content analysis and in-depth interviews, this research undertakes a case study of the online progressive blogosphere as a social movement. Previous research into social movement applications of the Internet and computer-mediated communication (CMC) focuses on "street" movement application of Internet resources. These studies find that though Internet applications are a boon to movements, they offer nothing novel, instead allowing movements to perform normal tasks at a faster rate. More recently, scholars have begun to examine movements with stronger roots in the online world, or "e-movements." Earl and Schussman (2003, 2004) assert that not only do unique e-movements exist, but that they have important substantial differences from street movements. This research examines the progressive blogosphere (PB) as one of these e-movements. I examine the movement activity of the PB through the lens of framing and New Social Movements (NSM) in order to gain insight to where e-movements fit within our current knowledge structures. In the end, I find that though decentralized and informal, the PB movement utilizes existing framing tasks and processes in order to mobilize passive readers into active users. After analyzing the PB movements' identity construction, mobilization techniques, goals, and leadership structures, I propose the existence of a "user-based model" for e-movements.

Self-Organization as a Response to Homelessness: Negotiating Autonomy and Transitional Living in a "Village" Community

Molinar, Robert 06 September 2018 (has links)
Tent cities date back to the 1930s; however, the past decade has seen a rise in formalized camps, many attempting to function as democratic communities. Here, democratic communities refer to temporary spaces in which people without homes (PWH) live together with the goal of governing their own affairs (horizontal rather than top-down). Findings of the first “village” for the homeless indicate mixed results with self-governance among PWH in terms of the autonomy of individuals or as a method to mitigate homelessness. Given decline of social welfare budgets, as well as criticisms that shelterization and criminalization try to control the poor, government-sanctioned camps have provided safe, legal, dignified spaces for PWH. Studies of tent cities are growing, yet few follow their attempt to implement self-governance within the first few years of existence. This ethnography of a transitional “village” in the Pacific Northwest fills a gap by uncovering socio-cultural and organizational processes that facilitate and impede self-organization. The village is collaborative; a nonprofit provides oversight to residents dwelling in tiny houses. The village is neither run exclusively by the homeless nor directly managed by housed “outsiders.” Using participant-observation, interviews, and documents, I study the development of the village’s vision, rooted in Occupy yet influenced by neoliberal principles. Some view this village as a safe, stable place in which to secure future housing while providing dignity and autonomy; residents themselves were divided in how they experienced autonomy. For some, living there can be difficult since they have the authority to enforce community rule violations on fellow residents but often do not out feeling threatened or uneasy about putting a fellow resident in check. Some residents perceive a lack of power in regulating others. The authority of the nonprofit board is inadvertently reproduced even as it seeks to relinquish that authority. My work also has implications for research on relations between “housed” and “homeless”, and for decoupling processes that focus on divergence between stated organizational policies and actual practices. Materials related to this work (Appendices A-E) are included as supplemental files with this dissertation.

This research seeks to understand the potential of MST to forge an class consciousness in their spheres. The focus point in this study is the mystique, instrument used by the movement to spread their ideas, principles and objectives. Some of the performances, scenarios, rites, dances and music, places the mystique in the role of an aesthetic manifestation realistic, able to give the worker landless a broader understanding of themselves and the world around him. We trace the factors that enhance or undermine the mystique in this critical aspect that is inherent since its creation, even within the Catholic Church's Pastoral Social. The potential of this tool is equip the historical subjects of the challenges, opponents and ontological possibilities of fights in the present and also becoming of the working class. However, the notions of alienation and ideology, and the debate on the question of necessary consciousness and praxis, allow us to draw a radical perspective of the obstacles facing the mystique, that she sometimes surrenders - part of the composition of the subjectivity of workers in times of crisis structural of capital

Music consumption : the impact of social networking, identity formation, and group influence

Warr, Richard Lloyd January 2015 (has links)
Previous researchers such as McGuire & Slater (2005) noted that people have an inherent need to share favourite music with other people, and also theorised that a democratisation of culture is taking place with consumers effectively standing by (or in some cases even replacing) traditional tastemakers by sharing music with one another through the Internet; thus shaping culture and in turn themselves. In addition, this theory supports the notion that once music consumers discover others online who have similar or interesting tastes, they may begin to interact with one another; therefore leading to the formation of communities around an artist or genre (or around a particular tastemaker such as a podcaster) which may also provide benefits to consumers in other areas of their social lives. The motivation of this thesis was to explore how these online social influences compared to the traditional offline social influences that can be inferred upon music consumption behaviours and habits. Methods of consumption can include listening to music alone or with others, obtaining music in different formats and on various platforms, and attending live events such as music shows or festivals. A study was conceptualised on behaviours relating to live music consumption, with a literature review being conducted on the exploration of the music industry and its digitisation, identity theory (both individual and collective), and social influence. The research methodology was separated into two phases; the first being a qualitative exploratory investigation consisting of a webnography data collection which was used to examine relevant trends in online forums, and the second an online survey. The online survey allowed for the quantitative testing of the theoretical frameworks identified by the literature review, as well as enabling the development of predictive models for live music consumption behaviours in both the online and offline social contexts.
