Socialinių ryšių įtaka akademinio jaunimo socializacijai (LEU atvejis) / The influence of the academic youth social relations to socialization (the case of Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences)

Marcinkevičienė, Vilma 04 January 2013 (has links)
Kodėl kiti mums reikalingi ir neįsivaizduojame savo aplinkos, tikslų, siekių be aplinkinių, be jų daromos įtakos mūsų gyvenimui. [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / The relevance of the topic. How often do we think about the surrounding and our place there? How do we see others and how they see us? How do we fit in the surrounding society? Do we differ from others? Are we not afraid to be different and keep our own attitude towards lots of things? Do we accept “unwritten” society’s laws as we do not want to differ from others or we see more benefits while doing that? We are sure that everyone would have his own answers to these questions just if he had an ability to listen to them. We do not often give such questions to ourselves as well. What is communication, sociability, being a part of the society, what demands does it have? Do we take care about ourselves, don’t we forget others? Why are other people necessary for us? Why cannot we imagine our surrounding, aims, targets without other people, without their influence to our lives? The need to communicate, get into relations, be involved into them are as inborn as biological and physiological needs. If we do not have anyone to communicate with, orient to or even compete with, if none supports or critizes us, many things are likely to loose their importance, value, meaning and purpose. Nowadays people must have a lot of knowledge and have to think about its improvement all the time. Human beings must try to find themselves between others, try to understand themselves and be able to present themselves, make their needs come true, to look for opportunities and be important to others. Combining Social Network and Semantic Content Analysis to Improve Knowledge Translation in Online Communities of Practice

Stewart, Samuel Alan 11 December 2013 (has links)
Establishing online communities of practice is an important part of the knowledge translation process in the modern healthcare system, but these online communities are new entity that is inherently different from traditional communities of practice that are dependent on existing social structures. The objective of this thesis is to combine communication analysis and content analysis to delve deeper into the communications within an online community to try and determine how online communities exist, and how that information can be leveraged to improve online knowledge translation. Using a novel approach this project will map the contents of online conversations to a structured medical lexicon (MeSH), and then use the inherent relationships of that lexicon to calculate term, user and thread similarities within an online community. These similarities, combined with connection analysis results, will provide a much deeper understanding of how online communities function. The methods developed here will then be tested on two separate mailing lists, the Pediatric Pain Mailing List (PPML) and SURGINET, a mailing list of general surgeons.

Johansson, Ted, Svensson, Rasmus January 2013 (has links)
This paper examines hotels in Stockholm to get a picture of how the hotel works with social media. There, the focus is both on the way the work behind is organized and how work is done in practice with their updates on social networks. Since social media is a relatively new phenomenon, we wanted to examine how the hotel industry in Stockholm handle this. To gain insight into this, we conducted qualitative interviews with those responsible for social media at six hotels in Stockholm and also quantitative data collection of their activity on social media to help in the analysis. Using a theoretical framework based on previous research, we were able to demonstrate a number of deficiencies in hotels where it was mostly a matter of its low priority among the hotels, it would require more resources and clearer guidelines and objectives from the management how the work should be done in practice.

An study on individuals’ experiences and attitudes towards their identity performance on Instagram

Beijer, Frida, Widelund, Pernilla January 2012 (has links)
In recent years, the internet has exploded of images. Not at least in the popular photo-sharing network Instagram as one of the fastest growing social network for the moment. Millions of people around the world share pictures and expose themself for friends and family. We were therefore interested in which experiences and attitudes users have towards their identities in relation to their self-image and self-presentation on Instagram. Furthermore, whether they in general have a primary interest in using Instagram as a tool to experiment with images to present their identity on Instagram, in which way they approach their Instagram follower’s expectations on how they present themselves on Instagram and if they are aware of any strategies in their self-presentation on Instagram. The result of this study is the fact that our respondents thinks that they do not intend to have a primary interest in experimenting with images on Instagram to present their identitiy, it is rather something that comes naturally in how they present themselves on Instagram. The primarily purpose of using Instagram do not appear to be for satisfying an experimental need in self-presentation on Instagram. It is rather to satisfy a social need. Following, it has emerged that they seems to have a varied self-awareness in terms of strategies and reasons for self-presentation and that they are significantly influenced by their followers expectations on their identity presentation.

Discharge procedures for mentally ill people : the perspective of former psychiatric patients on their social network, quality of life and future life expectations

Dufåker, Mona January 1993 (has links)
The aim of this study was to find out: (a) the role played by various agencies in the discharge procedure and (b) former psychiatric patients" own perspective on their social network, quality of life and future life expectations. The theoretical framework is based on Mead's symbolic interactionism, Asplund's interpretation of Tönnies' concepts Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft and Buber's dialogical philosophy. Descriptive, quantitative and qualitative data were gathered on four occasions from May 1984 to December 1986. On three occasions professionals provided information by means of structured questionnaires. Information on the last occasion was provided by former patients through interviews by means of a semistructured questionnaire. Seventy-three patients were discharged during the research period. I was able to follow 50 through all four stages. Fifty-three patients were interviewed. Other agencies were hardly involved at all in the discharge procedure except for the provision of home support. The duration of and stigma attached to mental illness, being without work and gender seemed to have the most influence on the primary network. The same issues (with the exception of gender), together with place of residence, financial difficulties and inability to exert influence over one's own situation influenced the former patients' quality of life and their expectations of the future. Special attention has been given to their occupational situation and to their relations to the professional network. Work opportunities were highly valued but most of the former patients were excluded from the labour market. The LFP groups satisfaction with the home care workers and dissatisfaction with the psychiatric professionals seemed to be due to the former's ability to undertake a ’caring’ relationship. /
S. 1-67: sammanfattning, s. 71-147, [3] s.: 5 uppsatser
/ digitalisering@umu

HOW THEY THINK YOU GOT THERE MATTERS: ATTRIBUTIONS ABOUT NETWORKING BEHAVIOR AND PERFORMANCE

Floyd, Theresa M 01 January 2014 (has links)
Certain properties of individuals’ social networks within their organizations are known to be associated with benefits. However, these properties are not universally beneficial for all individuals. To explain the differing utility of social connections for different actors, network research has tended to focus on factors relating to the actor’s characteristics, agency and cognition. With this dissertation, I explore a different contingency affecting actors’ abilities to leverage their networks: how observers perceive and evaluate the behavior of actors as they craft and use their networks, and how these attributions impact actors’ job performance. I develop a theoretical framework that incorporates social capital theory to develop a taxonomy of networking behaviors. I build upon network cognition research to explore how observers’ perceptions and attributions of actors’ networking behaviors rather than perceptions of network ties or structure affect actors’ outcomes. I draw upon attribution theory to suggest how observers’ attributions about actors may affect observers’ behavior towards actors, thus impacting actors’ outcomes. Results suggest that networking behaviors that are seen as serving the collective positively impact actors’ outcomes, while networking behaviors that are seen as self-serving negatively impact the actors’ outcomes by limiting access to high-status friends. However, attributions about an actor’s self-serving behavior augment the benefits the actor receives when he or she has access to high-status friends. When it comes to performance, networks matter, but it also matters how observers evaluate actors’ networking behaviors.

Relationships & Capital in Living Learning Communities: A Social Network Analysis

Woltenberg, Leslie Nicole 01 January 2014 (has links)
This study was designed to explore the possible connections between student peer relationships and individual students’ roles in a network as it pertained to outcomes such as self-reported academic achievement and personal satisfaction with the first year of college. The research question directing this inquiry is: How does a student’s role within a residential community of peers relate to success in college? Social network analysis was employed for examination of individual engagement within the context of a larger community. The vast learning community literature tells an interesting story: 1.) a history of co-curricular peer learning environments, 2) a tradition of research intended to assess the value of these programs, 3) a body of literature that provides theoretical explanations for why learning communities should work. The gap in the literature is found regarding what happens within the communities. To learn how individuals within community learn from one another, community of practice was utilized as a framework in this mixed-methods approach to examine the influence of relationships, and exchange, acquisition, & development of social capital within a living learning community While this network study indicated that popularity, relational ties to staff, and being someone sought-after for advice were not statistically significant predictors of higher GPA, the network analyses confirmed strong network density, cohesion, and proper structure for ideal capital flow. The results of this study confirm that this community is effective in establishing familiarity and even more so, providing an environment that fosters friendships among participants and staff. Furthermore, students developed the ability to construct knowledge alongside their peers. Given the density and relation-rich nature of this community, this positive environment is able to foster more complex and self-authored levels of meaning-making for the students involved. Building this scaffolding facilitated student development, which effectively created a student transformation from dependence on external authority to self-authorship. This study confirmed that the primary goals of a learning community have been met: a group of strangers developed into a network of friends who reap social and academic benefits by virtue of being together in a shared and successful living learning community environment.

AN EXPLORATORY STUDY OF SOCIAL SUPPORT FOR HEALTH-RELATED PURPOSES ON WEIBO IN CHINA

Chen, Chen 01 January 2013 (has links)
This study explores how people with medical concerns seek and perceive social support via Weibo—a social network site in China. The study conducts both a content analysis and an in-depth interview for a comprehensive understanding of the nature of social support on Weibo. Altogether 2548 postings and replies from four Weibo support groups—the Breast Cancer Group, the Arthritis Group, Baby Eczema Group and Children’s Health Group—were categorized into 9 types with a deductive thematic analysis; twenty participants from these four Weibo groups were recruited in the in-depth interview to explore how people seek and perceive social support from Weibo. Weibo stands out as a platform for people to exchange social support for its convenience, multiple functions, and strong ability to connect each other. Though there are some disadvantages of Weibo social support identified by Weibo users, they can, to some extent, be avoided and reduced under appropriate administration.
