The Elizabethan society of antiquaries reassessed

Jones, Helen Dorothy January 1988 (has links)
The Elizabethan Society of Antiquaries has traditionally been regarded as a scholarly group which dissolved due to attrition and perhaps the suspicion of the ruling administration. A 1614 effort to recongregate failed due to James I's unfounded suspicions of the members' political intentions. This interpretation rests on the assumption that the discourses produced by members were the object of the Society, and that the members were primarily scholars. While the discourses required extensive research, they were superficial and uncritical, not representative of the standard of historical work of which some of the members, such as Camden, Stow and Lambarde, were capable. They did not justify in themselves either the amount of time which must have been expended on them, or the secrecy which the Society maintained. Close examination of the members' professional and patronage-related activities shows that they were not scholars, but highly placed and very busy functionaries of the central administration. They had politically powerful patrons, were drawn from all points on the political and religious spectrum, and had official duties throughout the country. Careful probing of their activities suggests that their political motive was to establish and prepare the ground for a widely acceptable successor to Elizabeth I. James' suspicions were soundly based on fact. / Arts, Faculty of / History, Department of / Graduate

Unregulated Land Grab Through Legal Processes : A review of the different claims to land

Martinsson, Philip, Vos, Love January 2017 (has links)
The rise and deepening of economic globalization has highlighted a closer connection between international arrangements that governs global capital flow on the one hand, and acquisition of land and natural resources on the other. These shifts of political economy underpin how international investment law has created contrasting social dimensions of how land rights remain embedded in many societies. 6 As national and international regulations reflect the governance of land, the legitimacy to mediate among competing land claims will depend much on how these regulations can recognize the different values that society and actors attaches to land. Accordingly, this research will examine the multilevel system of governance covering the growing actions of commercialized land relations in developing countries. By looking at the interface between smallholder’s rights to land and large-scale land deals there is a growing concern that this relationship creates asymmetric rights in favor of the investor. With a closer inspection, it is also crucial to understand the host state’s facilitation of the investment as it determines to a high degree the outcome of land allocation processes.

The Anglican Church in Victorian Liverpool and its work with the labouring poor

Wilcox, Alastair James Howard January 2004 (has links)
This thesis will describe the nature of Anglican parochial work in Victorian Liverpool, with particular reference to the church's relationship with the poor during the period 1851-1902. The nineteenth century witnessed large scale urbanisation of which Liverpool was a conspicuous and distinctive example. How well adjusted were the institutions of the Anglican Church to meet these challenges? What structures, mechanisms and devices did clerics on the national stage recommend should be employed in both establishing and then running an efficient parish? How were these expectations met in practice? Many major studies already conducted locally have tended to centre on London. The availability of national and metropolitan sources (in particular those generated by Charles Booth) have been in some part responsible for this. Regional study however is key to understanding nineteenth century churches. What might the experiences within the 'second city of the Empire', have been? How far were recommended practices for efficient parochial management applicable in Liverpool? But the relationship between the priest and his parish is two sided. This thesis examines the use the poorer working classes made of the Anglican Church in Liverpool, not only in terms of worship but also rites of passage, (using the sacrament of baptism as an example) the agencies of relief and visitation. Liverpool is an excellent choice for such a study on account of the source material generated by religious effort, religious rivalry and ecclesiastical self-analysis. Although interesting statistical material exists for Liverpool, and should not be ignored, the primary emphasis of this thesis will be the use of regional qualitative data. This thesis will also be able to use material not hitherto in the public domain. This thesis must ignore (for reasons of length) the educational efforts made by the Anglicans. Date limitations curtail the use of much of the oral evidence gathered although reference will be made to this material where appropriate. This thesis will contend that there existed working class churches, used by the working class for worship, in membership or use of parochial organisations and for neighbourhood purposes (in the celebration of baptisms). Although success in one of these fields did not automatically entail success in the others, such churches, created the sentiment expressed by Victorians of 'our church.' The Anglican Church in late Victorian Liverpool was able to adapt to a certain degree, secular trends into the church by virtue of its strong parochial systems.

Heterosexual anal sex in the age of HIV : an exploratory study of a silenced subject

Duby, Zoe January 2008 (has links)
Includes bibliographical references (p. 89-103). / This dissertation serves as a discursive exploration into the underdiscussed topic of heterosexual anal sex and pervading penile-vaginal heteronormativity. To understand the origins and character of the seemingly universal ambivalence towards heterosexual anal intercourse I attempt to situate it historically. There is general ignorance concerning the prevalence of this sexual behaviour, but there exist deep-seated taboos and undertones of immorality and abnormality associated with it. All these factors play a part in individual sexual decision making; an attempt is made at exploring the motivations and personal choices that culminate in an act of heterosexual anal intercourse.
