1	Sortilege between Divine Ordeals and “Secular” Justice Naether, Franziska 10 May 2019 (has links) In this chapter, I show that the Sortes Astrampsychi and related lot and ticket oracles from Graeco-Roman Egypt quite frequently allude to legal issues or concrete acts of judicial life. I conclude that people asked oracles for help in legal matters, or, put differently, that the oracles formed part of the Egyptian system(s) of justice. I place this aspect of the Sortes Astrampsychi in context by discussing a selection of text types such as oracles, temple oaths, and amulet decrees dating back as far as the New Kingdom (1550 BCE) and argue that we need to interpret these texts in two ways: as texts of ritual practices and as texts of Egyptian/Ptolemaic/Roman Imperial law. I present case studies from ritual texts of Ptolemaic and Roman Egypt in Greek and Demotic where practitioners, mainly qualified temple personnel, acted as intermediates between humans and gods to find solutions in certain legal matters. info:eu-repo/classification/ddc/930 ddc:930

3	Astrological implications in the 'Lot oracle' PGM 50 Gieseler Greenbaum, Dorian, Naether, Franziska 30 July 2018 (has links) In previous editions of the magical papyri, PGM 50 has been considered as a lot oracle. In this article we propose a reinterpretation of the text as a source for astrology rather than for lot oracles. This reinterpretation is based on PGM 50’s astrological vocabulary. We provide a new translation based on this evidence. We further discover parallels to the second-century C.E. astrologer Vettius Valens in the verso of the text, which emend the original text as given by Wessely and Preisendanz. / In früheren Editionen der magischen Papyri wurde PGM 50 als Losorakel angesehen. In diesem Artikel argumentieren wir jedoch, den Text eher als einen Vertreter der Astrologie denn als ein Losorakel aufzufassen. Diese Neuinterpretation beruht auf dem astrologischen Fachvokabular, das in PGM 50 Anwendung fi ndet. Neben einer Neuübersetzung, basierend auf diesen Erkenntnissen, war es möglich, auf dem Verso des Pergaments Parallelen zum Werk von Vettius Valens (2. Jh. n. Chr.) zu identifi zieren.
