This study of Hornsbergs strand, Stockholm, aimed to explore the dynamics of social conflicts in public spaces following three research questions: (1) what are the driving factors in the spatial conflicts between inhabitants and visitors of Hornsbergs strand, (2) how do spatial conflicts in Hornsbergs strand reflect broader societal issues of polarization and segregation in Stockholm, and (3) what can be done on behalf of urban planners to avoid and manage similar conflicts in the future? Departing from literature related to spatial conflicts, tourism conflicts, and exclusionary practices in public spaces, I conducted observational studies, indepth interviews, and a document analysis of planning material. The study shows that differences between users and uses of public spaces in Hornsbergs strand are central in constructing spatial territories and was where most spatial conflicts originated. Further, results suggest that the development of Hornsbergs strand was made through an exclusive planning process, and that spatial conflicts reflect broader issues of polarization and segregation in Stockholm. / Denna studie av Hornsbergs strand, Stockholm, syftade till att undersöka sociala konflikter i offentliga rum med hjälp av tre forskningsfrågor: (1) vilka är de drivande faktorerna i de rumsliga konflikterna mellan invånare och besökare av Hornsbergs strand, (2) hur avspeglar de rumsliga konflikterna vid Hornsbergs strand bredare samhällsproblem i form av polarisering och segregation i Stockholm, och (3) vad kan stadsplanerare i Stockholm göra för att undvika och hantera liknande konflikter i framtiden? Med utgångspunkt i forskning kring rumsliga konflikter, konflikter inom turism samt exkluderande praktiker i offentliga utrymmen genomfördes observationsstudier, intervjuer och en dokumentanalys av relevant planeringsmaterial. Studien visar att skillnader mellan användare och olika användningar av de offentliga utrymmena vid Hornsbergs strand var centrala i skapandet av rumsliga territoriumoch, till följd, rumsliga konflikter. Vidare tyder resultaten på att planeringsprocessen förHornsbergs strand var exkluderande och att de rumsliga konflikterna karaktäriserar polarisering och segregation i Stockholm.

Como estudo de caso, adota-se a cidade de Petrolina-PE, tendo como objetivo geral analisar as particularidades da promoção de tais empreendimentos, bem como as suas implicações, na redefinição da lógica de estruturação do espaço urbano dessa cidade. Considera-se que essa redefinição compreende as mudanças nas relações entre centro e periferia, a própria parte (loteamento ou condomínio) e o todo (a cidade), além dos conflitos entre espaço público e privado, que acabam por tornar a articulação entre as diferentes frações do tecido urbano mais complexa. Numa outra frente de análise, destacam-se as estratégias utilizadas pelos agentes integrantes do circuito imobiliário na apropriação e organização espacial de Petrolina. As técnicas de pesquisa fundamentaram-se, principalmente, em entrevistas semiestruturadas e no levantamento de dados junto ao poder público municipal. As análises demonstraram que a crescente implantação dos novos produtos imobiliários, em Petrolina, tem apontado para um processo de reestruturação urbana, dando indícios de mudança do conteúdo socioespacial de seu espaço urbano e de um novo padrão que parece ocultar, ou muitas vezes negar, a condição da cidade enquanto articuladora de encontros, das relações de sociabilidade e convívio, das diferenças e conflitos, do imprevisto e do espontâneo. / This thesis explores real estate dynamics and urban restructuring in medium-sized cities by analyzing condominiums and closed lots – denominated here as new real estate products. As a case study employing the city of Petrolina-PE, it analyzes the particularities of promoting such ventures as well as their implications in redefining the logical structuring of urban space in this city. This redefinition encompasses the changing relations between center and periphery, their components (lots or condominium) and the whole (the city), and conflicts between public and private space, which end up making the articulations between the different parts of the urban fabric more complex. On another analytical front, the strategies used by participants in the real estate circuit in the appropriation and spatial organization of Petrolina are also highlighted. Research methods included semi-structured interviews and archival research at the municipal government. The analyses demonstrate that the increasing deployment of new real estate products in Petrolina have led to a process of urban restructuring leading to changes in the content of the socio-spatial urban space and a new pattern that seems to hide, or often deny, the condition of the city as articulator of meetings, relations of sociability and conviviality, differences and conflicts, the unexpected, and the spontaneous.
