Memorialising White Supremacy: The Politics of Statue Removal: A Comparative Case Study of the Rhodes Statue at the University of Cape Town and the Lee Statue in Charlottesville, Virginia

Trippe, Katie Sophia 25 February 2020 (has links)
In April 2015, the bronze statue of Cecil John Rhodes- notorious mining magnate, archimperialist and champion of a global Anglo-Saxon empire- was removed from its concrete plinth overlooking Cape Town, South Africa. This came as a result of the #RhodesMustFall (#RMF) movement, a movement that would see statues questioned and vandalised across the country. Two years later, fierce contestation over the hegemonic narrative told through the American South’s symbolic landscape erupted over the proposed removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, resulting in the deaths of multiple people in Charlottesville, Virginia. Increasing research on the removal of Rhodes and the removal of Confederate statuary has emerged in recent years. However, previous scholarship has failed to compare the wider phenomena of the calls for removal, from the memorialised figures to their change in symbolic capital, the movements’ inception and its outcomes. There is subsequently a gap in the literature understanding what the politics of statue removal tell us about not only the American and South African commemorative landscapes, but the nations’ interpretations of the past and societies themselves. Therefore, this thesis uses descriptive comparative analysis to compare two case studies where the debate over statue removal has surfaced most vehemently: Rhodes’ statue at the University of Cape Town and Lee’s statue in Charlottesville. Ultimately, this dissertation finds that the calls for the removal of statues are part of a wider change in tenor towards understanding and disrupting prevailing hegemonic narratives of white supremacy, in both society and its symbolic landscape. The phenomena demonstrates that heterogeneous societies with pasts marred by segregation and racism are moving to reject and re-negotiate these histories and their symbols, a move that has elicited deeply divided, emotional responses. Despite waning attention to monument removals, the issue remains unresolved, contentious, and capable of re-igniting.

Royal sculpture in Egypt 300 BC - AD 220

Brophy, Elizabeth Mary January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to approach Ptolemaic and Imperial royal sculpture in Egypt dating between 300 BC and AD 220 (the reigns of Ptolemy I and Caracalla) from a contextual point of view. To collect together the statuary items (recognised as statues, statue heads and fragments, and inscribed bases and plinths) that are identifiably royal and have a secure archaeological context, that is a secure find spot or a recoverable provenance, within Egypt. I then used this material, alongside other types of evidence such as textual sources and numismatic material, to consider the distribution, style, placement, and functions of the royal statues, and to answer the primary questions of where were these statues located? what was the relationship between statue, especially statue style, and placement? And what changes can be identified between Ptolemaic and Imperial royal sculpture? From analysis of the sculptural evidence, this thesis was able to create a catalogue of 103 entries composed of 157 statuary items, and use this to identify the different styles of royal statues that existed in Ptolemaic and Imperial Egypt and the primary spaces for the placement of such imagery, namely religious and urban space. The results of this thesis, based on the available evidence, was the identification of a division between sculptural style and context regarding the royal statues, with Egyptian-style material being placed in Egyptian contexts, Greek-style material in Greek, and Imperial-style statues associated with classical contexts. The functions of the statues appear to have also typically been closely related to statue style and placement. Many of the statues were often directly associated with their location, meaning they were an intrinsic part of the function and appearance of the context they occupied, as well as acting as representations of the monarchs. Primarily, the royal statues acted as a way to establish and maintain communication between different groups in Egypt.

Pokémon GO and the city : How Pokémon GO players in Uppsala use, experience and connect to the city

Cizinsky, Stefan January 2020 (has links)
Pokémon GO hit the world with a bang in the summer of 2016 and has since then set new records regarding revenue on multiple occasions. It has been researched extensively, although first and foremost from a HCI (human-computer interactions) and healthcare/public health perspective. In particular, studies approaching the phenomenon from a human geography and urban planning perspective have been very limited. This study therefore takes an inductive and exploratory approach and explores the ways in which Pokémon GO influences how players use and experience the city and how urban planners can use Pokémon GO in their work. To do this, nine interviews were conducted, six with currently active players and three with completely new players. A number of different themes emerged from the interviews and was subsequently used to structure the results. Physical activity, social interactions and benefits and exploration and discovery were the most prominent themes and also the most frequently mentioned reasons why players enjoy the game. Finally the findings are discussed in relation to planning with a focus on participatory planning practices but also in more general terms regarding urban and spatial planning.

A Follow-up Study of Mound Fort Junior High's Ninth Grade Class of 1962-63

Heaps, Helen 01 May 1968 (has links)
The intent of this study was to follow up the students of Mound Fort Junior High School's ninth grade class of 1962-63 in order to secure information and facts about members of that class and to answer the following questions: (1) What has happened to the students educationally? (2) What has happened to the students vocationally? (3) How many students have served or are presently serving the armed forces? (4) What is the marital status of each student? (5) How did the high school graduate compare with the dropout in test scores, grade point average, attendance, awareness of counseling services, and use of counseling services? (6) How did the students react to the school's program? There were 214 students (108 boys and 106 girls) who constituted the sample of this follow-up study. Sources used for obtaining desired information concerning the sample included a questionnaire and school records. Questionnaires were mailed to 214 students and it was assumed that 185 students received one. Of this number, 135 students (72.9%) completed and returned their questionnaires. The results of this study showed that graduates scored higher in all areas than the dropouts--intelligence, achievement, grade point, and school attendance. The test scores for the average dropout indicated that they had the intelligence and the ability to achieve in school work. There was a greater awareness of counseling services among the graduates than was true of the dropouts. Suggestions and comments made by the students indicated they would like their teachers to take a personal interest in them, talk to them on their level, and treat them as an adult. Students want to be encouraged to stay in school and to have the importance of education stressed.

This thesis brings as an original academic contribution the establishment of positive and significant theoretical relations between factors influencing and resulting from the collecting practice that stand out in the existing literature, arguing that positive emotional factors influence the thematic interest of the collector, which in turn provides emotional well-being and suppression of frustration, expansion and extension of the self and feelings of personal nostalgia. In order to meet the objective of investigating the correlations between the proposed constructs, a mixed methodological approach was adopted. The bibliographic survey served as a theoretical basis for the definition of hypotheses and the design of a conceptual model. The exploratory qualitative research carried out with five opinion leaders linked to the thesis’ object of study - the collectors of statues and action figures - consolidated an understanding about the motivators involved in this type of collection. Quantitative descriptive research occurred in three distinct phases. At first, scales were developed and adapted following recommended psychometric procedures. A sample with 250 collectors was used as a pre-test in order to determine the measurement model. After the validation and evaluation of the reliability of the scales, the theoretical relations hypothesized were analyzed by means of confirmatory factor analysis and structural equations modeling based on PLS. Two surveys were carried out with collectors of statues and action figures, one in Brazil, with a sample of 700 collectors, and another in the United States, with a sample of 250 collectors, comparing the results of the measurement and structural models. The results indicate that early positive emotions influence the thematic interest of the collector, leading him to collect as a form of identity expression (extension of the self) and search for the expansion of the self (expanded self), through the possession of collection objects, with effect on the individual's emotional wellbeing. Extended Self and Expanded Self constructs prove distinct in their conceptual perspectives. In addition, the age group is shown as an important moderating variable in the relationships between suppression of frustration and personal nostalgia - the objects of collection evoke memories and nostalgic feelings and play a compensatory role. On the other hand, the origin of the collectors (Brazil and USA) does not appear as a moderating variable of the predicted theoretical relations, which indicates indistinct influencing and resulting factors. As a general conclusion, the thesis offers a way for the construction of a theory on collectivism, with an unprecedented and initial understanding of relevant causal relations.
