Sakamoto, Felipe Sannomiya. January 2018 (has links)
Due to their chacteristics, they reach high yield values and resistence levels. The presence of chrome, nickel and molybdenum allied with the carbon content, from 0,20 to 0,70% in this study, can provide improvements on the mechanical properties. The nitriding surface threatment used may provide improvement on corrosion, wear properties and increase the surface hardness. In this study was applied the nitriding plasma threatment on samples of family 43XX steel and was evaluated, on comparative basis, the alterations on the surface and in the microstructure of nitrided steels in comparison to not nitrided steels. Higher carbon content may hamper or reduce the nitrides deposition, therefore, it is important to evaluate the influence of the carbon concentration in theses structures. The microstructure characteristics were analysed by optical microscopy, microhardness and X-ray difraction. The nitriding plasma thermochemical threatment raised the surface hardness to values of about 800 HV, higher than the values measured in the substract. The nitrogen diffused zone of higher carbon content steels was thicker than the lower. The content of arrested austenite increased as the carbon contend increased, but was just possible to measure it by optical microscopy, because it is difficult to measure lower contents than 5% or homogen and thick distributed by X-ray difraction / Mestre

Amorim, Marcelo Soares. January 2016 (has links)
The advanced high strength steels are of importance in modern mobility industry. In the automotive industry, for example, it is anticipated that the use of such materials will be increased in the near future. Some characteristics of these materials can be improved through heat treatments, considering the entire mass of the product or in specific regions of a part, for which it is necessary a particular mechanical behavior. This work focused on the initial investigation of a local heat treatment by laser radiation, a controlled form of energy addition, in the mechanical properties and microstructure of two of these materials. The studied materials are the dual phase steel (DP 600) and the transformed induced plasticity steel (TRIP 750), and the desired contribution here was to provide information about the interaction between the laser radiation and the studied materials for a given range of thermal processing parameters. To characterize the materials as received and after proposed laser heat treatments, metallographic evaluation, X-ray diffraction, and hardness and tensile tests were performed. It was found that, for the range of process parameters investigated, there were significant changes in the characteristics of the materials, notably an increase in surface hardness, reaching values corresponding to twice of those for materials without treatment, in the yield limits, with increases of up to 15% with respect to the base material, and strength limits, with increases up to about 30% with respect to the base material. On the other hand, there was a decrease in the elongation of materials, when subjected to tensile tests, up to 80% in comparison to materials without heat treatment / Mestre

Analysis of fatigue behavior, fatigue damage and fatigue fracture surfaces of two high strength steels

Lester, Charles Gilbert, IV 18 November 2011 (has links)
Building fuel efficient automobiles is increasingly important due to the rising cost of energy. One way to improve fuel efficiency is to reduce the overall automobile weight. Weight reductions using steel components are desirable because of easy integration into existing manufacturing systems. Designing components with Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS) has allowed for material reductions, while maintaining strength requirements. Two Advanced High Strength steel microstructures investigated in this research utilize different strengthening mechanisms to obtain a desired tensile strength grade of 590MPa. One steel, HR590, utilizes precipitation strengthening to refine the grain size and harden the steel. The other steel, HR590DP, utilizes a dual phase microstructure consisting of hardened martensite constituents in a ferrite matrix. The steels are processed to have the same tensile strength grade, but exhibit different fatigue behavior. The central objective of this research is to characterize and compare the fatigue behavior of these two steels. The results show the dual phase steel work hardens at a low fatigue life. The precipitation strengthened microstructure shows hardening at low strain amplitudes, softening at intermediate strain amplitudes and little to no effect at high strain amplitudes. These different fatigue responses are characterized and quantified in this research. Additionally, observations showing the fracture surfaces and the bulk microstructure are analyzed.

Atilio, Isabela. January 2017 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The increasing demand for oil and its products has driven the development of materials for ducts with high fracture toughness and high mechanical strength, such as high strength low alloy (HSLA) steels, appertaining to the API classes. In addition to the use of these steels, the application of the high frequency resistance welding process (HF/ERW) has gained greater interest in the sector. However, defects in the welded joints are one of the most causes of failures in pipelines, especially when they are associated with external operating conditions, which has been the reason for studies related to the structural integrity of these tubes. The aim of this work was to study the fracture toughness of an API 5L X70 steel tube welded by the HF/ERW process, from data obtained with CTOD tests bending specimens by three points, type SE (B) gull wing. The proposed methodology involved CTOD tests at various temperatures, including the ductile-brittle transition region, in order to assess the structural integrity of the material under critical operating conditions. The tests were performed based on the ASTM E1820 and BS7448 standards, and consisted of the use of specimens taken directly from the wall of the tube, with subsequent planning. In general, the base material samples showed good fracture toughness at all test temperatures, which did not occur with the samples of welded material, which presented low toughness. The toughness results obtained showed that the methodology used for the study of structural integrity by means of the CTOD tests with samples drawn directly from the wall of the tube, with subsequent planning, was adequate. Although the ASTM E1820 and BS7448 standards adopt different parameters for the determination of the CTOD value, it was observed that the CTOD values were very close / Mestre
