Effet de la corrosion des armatures sur le comportement des murs en remblai renforcé par des éléments métalliques / Effect of corrosion on the behavior of earth walls reinforced by steel elements

Chau, Truong-Linh 27 September 2010 (has links)
The preliminary analysis of a database, gathering results of laboratory tests, performed on soil and steel samples extracted from wall built several decades ago, has shown the difference in behavior between different types of reinforcement strips, and the large scattering of data. It served as a basis to derive relationships between weight loss, ultimate strength and ultimate strain of reinforcement strips. The presence of very thin strips compared to the size of the reinforced earth wall makes it interesting to use homogenization methods. We adopted a multiphase model, that makes it possible to get a satisfactory modeling of the tensile forces in reinforcement strips. We studied four corrosion scenarios to take into account various situations in which corrosion rates can become significant. The spatial distribution of corrosion can have a clear influence on the behavior of the wall, the failure mechanism, and create complex redistributions of tensile forces between adjacent strips. Parametric studies were carried out to investigate the effects of surcharges, and of some details of modeling, such as the junction between panels, or the junction between the reinforcement strips and the facing panels. Results have been compared with measures obtained on full scale reinforced earth walls or on physical models, and with results of other numerical simulations. Results provide elements for the definition of a strategy for the monitoring and the surveillance of reinforced earth walls

Quality by design: improving pre-stressed reinforcement for concrete railroad ties via geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing

Haynes, Mark Davis January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Industrial & Manufacturing Systems Engineering / Chih-Hang John Wu / Quality is a result of product design and production control. Product design must maximize the ability to function across variations in production and environment. Production control must monitor and maintain the key design characteristics necessary for the intended function. Failure to do so results in premature part failure and increased costs. This has occurred in the production of modern cross ties. By designing quality into the product and production process, performance is maximized. This research presents a methodology for incorporating quality into the product design and production process. For product design, a relationship between product performance and design parameters is established by modeling techniques. These models provide a means to redesign the product to maximize performance and to understand the sensitivity of the design to fluctuation in production and environment. These models also establish the key design parameters that are critical for sustaining quality. For production, a method of monitoring the key design parameters is presented that provides an affordable means of automated inspection. Automated inspection removes operator error from the inspection process and allows for greater sampling rates to be achieved. The methodology presented allows for a potential of 100% inspection to be achieved with minimal impact to production costs. The research is applied to the analysis and quality control of pre-stressing steel reinforcement for concrete cross-ties. This application provides an opportunity to test and verify the research findings on a real world problem. Novel automated 3D spatial analysis algorithms are presented. This research furthers the state of the art of performing Geometrical Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T). A cost effective method of non-contact surface profiling was developed with high resolution and high density surface profiles. The combined research findings present a methodology of achieving quality by design.

Weitspannende Sandwichelemente mit vorgespannten Deckschichten aus Carbonbeton

von der Heid, Ann-Christine, Will, Norbert, Hegger, Josef 21 July 2022 (has links)
Sandwich elements with concrete facings have excellent physical properties, a high level of prefabrication, short assembly times and various architectural design options. The facings are usually produced with steel reinforcement, which leads to a thickness of about 80 mm due to the minimum concrete cover required in EC 2 [1] for corrosion protection of the reinforcement [2]. Furthermore, the bond between the single layers are not taken into account in the design of sandwich elements, so that the full potential of sandwich constructions with reinforced concrete facings is not completely exhausted. Based on the projects HE 2637/16-1 and HE 2637/16-2 [3], see page 356 et seq., the focus of the transfer project was set on wide-span sandwich elements with thin facings made of carbon reinforced concrete and their practical production. An analytical model, which was developed during the project term, takes into account the bond between the single layers and can accurately represent the load-bearing and deformation behaviour of the novel sandwich elements.
