An investigation of stress and copying strategies among university-level EFL teachers in the United Arab Emirates

Aubrey, Jonathan Tadd January 2014 (has links)
This research investigated the main sources of occupational stress that tertiary English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers experience in the United Arab Emirates. A secondary focus was to identify the coping strategies used by EFL teachers who exhibit low levels of stress, and what types of support were needed by EFL teachers who exhibited moderate to high levels of stress. While theories abound in the literature on the reasons for stress and its consequences for teachers, little is known about the role of coping strategies and their specific usefulness in eradicating stress. Given the nature of the research questions, an interpretivist mixed methods approach was deemed appropriate. Data collection methods included a pre-tested online survey followed by 26 semi-structured interviews and a Likert-style questionnaire which were used to gain an in-depth understanding of the quantitative aspects of stress levels. Qualitative, semi-structured interviews were used to examine the coping strategies of 113 self-identified EFL teachers with low stress levels. They were analysed through theme analysis and triangulated with other data to increase the robustness of the results. The sources of teacher stress derived from the analysis are ranked according to the 20 cited as most significant by the participants. They are discussed in detail under the headings of stressors related to classroom teaching, administration leadership style, professional issues and their own assessment as teachers. The strategies teachers use to cope with these stresses are varied and range from activities to attitudes. Key recommendations for the teaching faculty centre on general health and well-being, and overall workplace focus. Clearly, EFL teachers suffering from workplace stress must take care of themselves physically, psychologically and emotionally. Yet teachers in the UAE also expressed a desire for administrators who practice more democratic leadership styles, and acknowledged that the attitudes of their students toward learning English had a considerable impact on their own practices. Further inquiry is recommended into a more complete examination of teacher stressors and their relationship to cultural factors, specifically two of the cultural dimensions found in the UAE (power distance and uncertainty avoidance), which were found to be particularly relevant to stressors in the category of leadership style and practices.

Stres management u pedagogických pracovníků / Stress management of education prefessionals

Urbanová, Marie January 2017 (has links)
This Master´s Thesis focuses on mapping the occurrence of stress in the occupation of pedagogues, its significance, influence and circumstances which affect it. Furthermore, this thesis maps the occurrence of the burn-out syndrome phenomenon, its manifestations and influences which affect it. Also, the thesis deals with stress management and its potential use in the pedagogic field. In this matter, it mostly deals with time management, self-reflection and the influence of positive orientation. In this thesis, the used methods were the use of questionnaires among the educationalists and also dialogues with selected headmasters. The results confirm the existence of connection between the values of the burn-out syndrome and the length of pedagogic career, the age of a person, sex and other studied aspects. Nevertheless, it is important to point out, that the hypotheses based on the studied literature were not confirmed.

Bemanningsenhet som en ressurs i sykehus. : En kvalitativ studie. / Staffing unit as a resource in hospitals. : A qualitative stud

Jahnsen, Bente January 2014 (has links)
De ansattes mestringsressurser og personlige egenskaper ser ut til å ha en betydning / Background: In healthcare manyc aregivers work part-time involuntarily, resulting in unpredictable income and work schedule. A staffing unit could providean efficient tool for reducingthe scope of involuntary work. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the important factors in supporting a good staffing unit and full-time work for caregivers while simultaneously providing quality services. Method: We recruited 14 caregivers, who had worked ina staffing unit for 7-18 months, to participate inthree focus-group interviews. We reviewed all data using qualitative content analysis. Result: We identified and describedthree categories: organization and culture, health promoting work places, and the qualifications of the employees. Conclusion: Our results show that a full-timeposition is a basic requirement for recruitment to staffing units. Retaining employees requires systematic and structured training as well as skill development and maintenance. Management should promote a healthy workplace by facilitating coping skills and recognizing achievement, ambition, and affiliation. Such promotion ensures careg ivers’ ability to provide quality care. The employees’ coping resources and personal skills appear to be significant. /
ISBN 978-91-86739-94-2

IoMT-Based Accurate Stress Monitoring for Smart Healthcare

Rachakonda, Laavanya 05 1900 (has links)
This research proposes Stress-Lysis, iLog and SaYoPillow to automatically detect and monitor the stress levels of a person. To self manage psychological stress in the framework of smart healthcare, a deep learning based novel system (Stress-Lysis) is proposed in this dissertation. The learning system is trained such that it monitors stress levels in a person through human body temperature, rate of motion and sweat during physical activity. The proposed deep learning system has been trained with a total of 26,000 samples per dataset and demonstrates accuracy as high as 99.7%. The collected data are transmitted and stored in the cloud, which can help in real time monitoring of a person's stress levels, thereby reducing the risk of death and expensive treatments. The proposed system has the ability to produce results with an overall accuracy of 98.3% to 99.7%, is simple to implement and its cost is moderate. Chronic stress, uncontrolled or unmonitored food consumption, and obesity are intricately connected, even involving certain neurological adaptations. In iLog we propose a system which can not only monitor but also create awareness for the user of how much food is too much. iLog provides information on the emotional state of a person along with the classification of eating behaviors to Normal-Eating or Stress-Eating. This research proposes a deep learning model for edge computing platforms which can automatically detect, classify and quantify the objects in the plate of the user. Three different paradigms where the idea of iLog can be performed are explored in this research. Two different edge platforms have been implemented in iLog. The platforms include mobile, as it is widely used, and a single board computer which can easily be a part of network for executing experiments, with iLog Glasses being the main wearable. The iLog model has produced an overall accuracy of 98% with an average precision of 85.8%. Smart-Yoga Pillow (SaYoPillow) is envisioned as a device that may help in recognizing the importance of a good quality sleep to alleviate stress while establishing a measurable relationship between stress and sleeping habits. A system that analyzes the sleeping habits by continuously monitoring the physiological changes that occur during rapid eye movement (REM) and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) stages of sleep is proposed in the current work. In addition to the physiological parameter changes, factors such as sleep duration, snoring range, eye movement, and limb movements are also monitored. The SaYoPillow system is processed at the edge level with the storage being at the cloud. SaYoPillow has 96% accuracy which is close to other existing research works. This research can not only help in keeping an individual self-aware by providing immediate feedback to change the lifestyle of the person in order to lead a healthier life, but can also play a significant role in the state-of-the-art by allowing computing on the edge devices.
