Land Reform and Structural Transformation: Evidence from East Asia

Land reform is closely related to agricultural development and the whole development process. This thesis examines the impacts of land reform on asset distribution, agricultural productivity, and the process of structural transformation. By investigating land reforms in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea after World War II, I find that land reform has positive and long-run influences on the structural transformation. Through redistributing farmland from large landholders to small farmers, land reform is viewed as an effective instrument for the achievement of low levels of asset inequality. Land reform also provides small owner-cultivators incentives to work harder and invest more in their own farmlands, leading to an increase in agricultural productivity. The rapid growth in agricultural productivity stimulates the reallocation of labor from agricultural to non-agricultural occupations, which is the key part of structural transformation.

Essays on Economic Growth and Structural Transformation

abstract: This dissertation consists of three essays on modern economic growth and structural transformation, in particular touching on the reallocation of labor across industries, occupations, and employment statuses. The first chapter investigates the quantitative importance of non-employment in the labor market outcomes for the United States. During the last 50 years, production has shifted from goods to services. In terms of occupations, the routine employment share decreased, giving way to increases in manual and abstract ones. These two patterns are related, and lower non-employment had an important role. A labor allocation model where goods, market services, and home services use different tasks as inputs is used for quantitative exercises. These show that non-employment could significantly slow down polarization and structural transformation, and induce significant displacement within the labor force. The second chapter, coauthored with Bart Hobijn and Todd Schoellman, looks at the demographic structure of structural transformation. More than half of labor reallocation during structural transformation is due to new cohorts disproportionately entering growing industries. This suggests substantial costs to labor reallocation. A model of overlapping generations with life-cycle career choice under switching costs and structural transformation is studied. Switching costs accelerate structural transformation, since forward-looking workers enter growing industries in anticipation of future wage growth. Most of the impact of switching costs shows on relative wages. The third chapter establishes that job polarization is a global phenomenon. The analysis of polarization is extended from a group of developed countries to a sample of 119 economies. At all levels of development, employment shares in routine occupations have decreased since the 1980s. This suggests that routine occupations are becoming increasingly obsolete throughout the world, rather than being outsourced to developing countries. A development accounting framework with technical change at the \textit{task} level is proposed. This allows to quantify and extrapolate task-specific productivity levels. Recent technological change is biased against routine occupations and in favor of manual occupations. This implies that in the following decades, world polarization will continue: employment in routine occupations will decrease, and the reallocation will happen mostly from routine to manual occupations, rather than to abstract ones. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Economics 2019

Contract farming and organic rice production in Laos : a transformation analysis

As in many least developed countries the farmers in Laos are heavily dependent on subsistence based agriculture production for their livelihood. A key for increased welfare for the rural population inLaosis to increase their profits of small scale farmers and generate a higher income per capita. One possible way to increase the profits and income for smallholder farmers may be to convert in to organic rice production for the export market, since the international market for organic rice is growing, consumers are prepared to pay a premium prise for organic products and conditions for organic rice production are favourable in Laos. Organic rice farming has grown in Laos during the last decade as greater volumes of organic rice are produced and exported. Organic rice is mainly produced by smallholders in donor projects or by contract farmers supplying contract farming companies. In this thesis I try to determine the causes behind this structural transformation by incorporating evolutionary economic theory (Schumpeter, 1911; Dahmén, 1950 and Marmefelt, 1998) which focuses on entrepreneurial innovations and creditors as the basis for changes in the economy. By performing a Dahménian transformation analysis of the transition from conventional- to organic rice production within the development block around rice production in Laos, I try to determine the transformation pressure causing the transformation to take place. Emphasis is in particular given to the role of contract farming in this process. I investigate to what extent the contract farming firm can be regarded as a Schumpeterian banker, a concept introduced by Marmefelt (1998), that can coordinate the development block around rice production by providing credits to the entrepreneurs within the development block. The analysis shows that two types of transformation pressures are likely to have caused the farmers to convert to organic rice production. First of all it is likely that the relatively higher price paid for organic rice (42 percent higher than conventional rice) has convinced farmers to make the transition. This type of transformation pressure can be seen as a market pull type, as it originates from an increased demand in the international market, which in turn increases the relative price for the product. The analysis further shows that a production method innovation had taken place by the introduction of new inputs, made available by the contract farming firm. This has led to an increased productivity which, combined with the premium price, generated higher profits for the organic contract farmers. The production method innovation can be seen as a market push type of transformation pressure originating from the supply side. In this thesis I argue that it is unlikely that the transformation would have occurred without the involvement of the contract farming firm. On their own, farmers did neither have the means to grow the organic rice, nor the proper market channels to process and sell the organic rice on the international market. I argue that the contract farming firm’s ability to facilitate price signal information from the international market to farmers, provide access to the new market thru market links, and provide credits for new inputs as well as technical assistance essentially made the transition to organic rice possible. However the analysis also shows that the contract farming firm had a limited ability to fulfil its role as a coordinator in the evolvement of the organic rice production, in terms of a Schumpeterian banker, because of limited abilities to solve bottlenecks in the value chain. The reason for this is mainly limited financial resources to finance complementary investments in other parts of the development block.

Schooling Choice during Structural Transformation

abstract: This dissertation consists of two essays. The first measures the degree to which schooling accounts for differences in industry value added per worker. Using a sample of 107 economies and seven industries, the paper considers the patterns in the education levels of various industries and their relative value added per worker. Agriculture has notably less schooling and is less productive than other sectors, while a group of services including financial services, education and health care has higher rates of schooling and higher value added per worker. The essay finds that in the case of these specific industries education is important in explaining sector differences, and the role of education all other industries are less defined. The second essay provides theory to investigate the relationship between agriculture and schooling. During structural transformation, workers shift from the agriculture sector with relatively low schooling to other sectors which have more schooling. This essay explores to what extent changes in the costs of acquiring schooling drive structural transformation using a multi-sector growth model which includes a schooling choice. The model is disciplined using cross country data on sector of employment and schooling constructed from the IPUM International census collection. Counterfactual exercises are used to determine how much structural transformation is accounted for by changes in the cost of acquiring schooling. Redundancy duration and business alteration - Consequences of establishment closures in Sweden

This thesis follows and analyses what happens to individuals who work at establishments that are closed down. I examine if and when the displaced workers are re-employed. Furthermore, I examine to what extent individuals have moved, changed industry of work, have started to commute or have become self-employed. Additionally I examine, if the workers become selfemployed after displacement, how many of them that does so within the same industry of work as they initially got displaced from. A unique longitudinal matched employer-employee data incorporating all firms, establishments and their employees in Sweden between the years 1997-2008 is used. All individuals between 25 and 55 years of age at the time of displacement that were displaced between 2000 and 2003 due to establishment closures are followed over a five-year period of time. Consistent with previous empirical research, it is shown that an absolute majority of the workers that are displaced one given year also recovers within that same year. The results moreover express that the longer the displaced workers are out of employment, the larger is the willingness to change industry of work, change municipality of living or move into self-employment. The willingness to commute is however found to be fairly constant over time. Finally, I find that those who become self-employed to a greater extent start business in other industries than they were displaced from as time passes.

Essays on worker heterogeneity and its macro implications

This dissertation examines the aggregate and sectoral implications of the self-selection of workers with different skills into sectors and occupations. The first chapter concerns the low growth rate of labor productivity in services in the United States that accompanied the large expansion of the sector. The slow growth of labor productivity in this sector may be caused by the selection of less productive workers into services as the sector expands. Using panel data for US workers, I document that workers moving into professional services are more productive than an average worker in the sector. On the other hand, workers moving into education, health, and the public sector are less productive than incumbents. I build a generalized quantitative multi-sector Roy model that allows for these rich patterns of selection. Compared to a conventional selection model where new workers arriving at all services sectors are negatively selected by assumption, the estimated model in this paper leads to an effect of selection on labor productivity for professional services that is 14 percentage points higher, and a weaker negative effect for education, health, and public services in the U.S. between 1989 and 2019. Overall, selection leads to little effect on labor productivity in aggregate services, contrasting sharply with the prediction of a conventional selection model. The second chapter, joint with Siddharth George, studies the potential gains in aggregate productivity from mitigating the intergenerational persistence in occupations. Workers are much more likely to enter the occupation of their parents around the world. In this chapter, we develop a measure of this dynastic bias for occupations – the odds ratio of the probability of choosing an occupation conditional on whether one’s father is in that occupation – for over 90 countries with data from 275 censuses or national surveys. At the occupation level, we document that the dynastic bias is increasing in the eliteness of occupation but decreasing in the average years of schooling. At the aggregate level, we document that the dynastic bias first rises and then falls with both GDP per capita and the average years of schooling of an economy. To evaluate the aggregate implication of the dynastic bias on productivity, we build a quantitative Roy model of occupational choice with entry barriers into occupations that depend on whether one’s parent works in that occupation or not. We calibrate the model and perform counterfactual exercises to infer the potential gains in productivity for all economies in our sample. The entry barriers of occupations are set to match the dynastic bias of each occupation. We then remove all entry barriers and solve for the new equilibrium so that workers pursue their occupations entirely based on their comparative advantage without any income penalty. This frictionless counterfactual leads to labor productivity gains at the aggregate level that average at 8.6% for all censuses in our sample. Focusing on the latest censuses of the 51 non-high-income countries with data after 2000, we find that the average potential gains in labor productivity remain considerable at 8.7%, with 20 countries having potential gains above 10%.

South Africa's agricultural product space : diversifying for growth and employment / Ernst Former Idsardi

South Africa’s sluggish economic growth and limited structural transformation are at the core of the country’s high levels of unemployment and poverty. Why some countries are able to grow and others not has been the subject of much academic debate, with recent literature throwing fresh light on the phenomenon by exploring the relationship between growth and a country’s productive structure. It is argued that countries’ heterogeneous productive structures stem from differences in entrenched capabilities and know-how in producing and marketing a very specific set of products. Investigating and comparing what countries actually produce and how this supports economic development yield valuable insights into why countries differ and what their transformation priorities should be. In this study a new analytical approach is adopted to determine the potential growth paths of South Africa’s broader agricultural sector, the so-called agro-complex. Comprising 1 456 primary and processed products as well as production inputs within the food, feed and fibre segments, this broad sector makes an important contribution to economic development through its direct and indirect linkages with other economic sectors as well as its relatively high labour absorption rate. The wide-ranging economic challenges that South Africa faces have clearly gripped the country’s agro-complex. A growing dependency on imports of higher value, processed food has led to deteriorating terms of trade, while limited innovation and diversification in agricultural exports (coupled with a high proportion of re-exports) is seriously constraining the positive impact that the agro-complex could have on the country’s growth rate. In this study, the productive structure of the agro-complex is analysed through the application of the ‘product space’ framework. This methodology investigates the relatedness between products as reflected in the conditional probability of a product being exported in tandem with another product, considering all global trade flows. The proximity value, the measurement of relatedness, between all 1 456 products is used to arrive at the structure and visible evidence of an agricultural product space network. This structure allows potential diversification pathways to be analysed. Research has shown that a country’s diversification process involves moves along pathways to nearby - and thus related – ‘new’ products, which simplifies the redeployment of existing productive capabilities and knowledge. These pathways are identified according to three strategic values, namely structural transformation, market potential and employment creation. The potential for structural transformation is determined by using a product-level measure of complexity, with higher level complexity (i.e. upgrading) going to the core of structural transformation. The potential market demand is determined by examining the prospects for import substitution; producing re-exported products locally; producing new, high-potential export products; and diversifying into new markets with existing export products (with the latter two categories evident in the results of a Decision Support Model (DSM)). Finally, the potential for employment creation is analysed in the light of labour and human capital intensities at product level. The study found that South Africa’s position in the agricultural product space is relatively dispersed. This position is characterised by a proportionally high level of core competencies within the primary agricultural cluster and a limited amount of vertical linkages. Furthermore the analyses showed that, especially the products for which South Africa has developed a significant high level of specialisation such as plums and wines are located in the sparser, less promising, parts of the agricultural product space. Notwithstanding, a total of 60 realistic diversification opportunities are within “reach” from the countries core competencies in the agro-complex. The analysis on structural transformation established that the level of product complexity within the agro-complex is more important for economic development than product diversity per se. It was revealed that South Africa only ranked 69th globally with regards to the complexity of its agro-complex. It was determined that upgrading within the forestry and agro-processing of food clusters hold the most potential for improving this position. The investigation into the potential for diversification driven by market potential revealed fore mostly that the potential for substituting imports as well as re-exports with local production is limited. The market prospects for exporting “new” products and expanding the export destinations of existing products within the agro-complex is much more favourable. It was estimated that most employment creation could be derived from diversification within the primary agricultural cluster although its number of opportunities are limited. Diversification within both the primary agricultural and agro-processing of food clusters was found the have to most favourable prospects for developing the level of human capital within the agro-complex. Based on all three strategic values, the most promising diversification opportunities are located within the forestry cluster. The range of realistic opportunities within the five clusters of the agro-complex form the core for developing product-level diversification strategies. This will ultimately strengthen the position of the agro-complex and boost South Africa’s growth path for the next decade. Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) for Heterogeneous Catalysis : Synthesis and Characterization

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline hybrid materials with interesting chemical and physical properties. This thesis is focused on the synthesis and characterization of different MOFs and their use in heterogeneous catalysis. Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), including ZIF-4, ZIF -7 and ZIF -62, Ln(btc)(H2O) (Ln: Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Er and Yb), Ln2(bpydc)3(H2O)3, (Ln: Sm, Gd, Nd, Eu, Tb, Ho and Er), MOF-253-Ru and Zn(Co-salophen) MOFs were synthesized. Various characterization techniques were applied to study the properties of these MOFs. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were extensively used. The effect of synthesis parameters, such as batch composition and temperature, on the formation and morphology of ZIF-7 and ZIF-62 was studied. Structural transformation and flexibility of two series of lanthanide-based MOFs, Ln(btc)(H2O) (Ln: Nd, Ho and Er) and Ln2(bpydc)3(H2O)3, (Ln: Sm and Gd) upon drying and heating were characterized. Relations between metal coordination, structure flexibility and thermal stability among the Sm2(bpydc)3(H2O)3, Nd(btc)(H2O) and MOF-253 were investigated. Salophen- and phenanthroline-based organic linkers were designed, synthesized and characterized. Metal complexes were coordinated to these linkers to be used as catalytic sites within the MOFs. Catalytic studies using two MOF materials, Ln(btc) and MOF-253-Ru, as heterogeneous catalysts in organic transformation reactions were performed. The Unionization (problems) Concieved By Journalists In The Post-1980 Mediascape In Turkey

The 1980s as a decade is characterized by the proliferation of new information and communication technologies as well as the expansion of US-led economic policy following the economic depression of the 1970s. Deregulation, privatization and the withdrawal of the state from many areas due to the disintegration of the welfare state model were all common all around the world. All these significant changes affected the structure of the labour market, the work organization and the framework for the employment relationship. As with any industry in the world, the organisation of the media has dramatically changed since the 1980s, the most important being the alteration of media ownership patterns. Indeed, in Turkey, the traditional media proprietors who were also journalists themselves replaced big trustees. This followed by journalists giving priority to the interests of the media proprietors&rsquo / . Thus, the media became a hegemonic tool and journalists accepted working under the ideological pressure with the belief that they could not be successful unless they played the game according the rules. It was with these changes that the deunionization has emerged. Bosses aimed at decreasing the power of the union at the workplace and pulverize workers&rsquo / reaction. This study presents the results of a field study consisting of a survey of 285 journalists among which there are unionised as well as non-unionised members and in-depth interviews with 35 journalists who occupy posts such as editors, chief editors or managers. The study reveals that most journalists choose not to become a member of a union due to the fear of losing their jobs. Factors such as the structure of the media, the employment legislation and the organisation of the unions are also important in understanding the journalists&rsquo / conception of unionization. Furthermore, the lack of class consciousness among journalists also causes denunionazation in the media sector. Today, most journalists believe that they belong to the elite class of the society just like the media proprietors. Therefore, it becomes inevitable for them to represent their bosses&rsquo / class and act according to the media group&rsquo / s expectations and business interests.
