L’accompagnement à l’autonomisation d’étudiants de tous niveaux : le cas des étudiants LANSAD de niveau A2/B1 en anglais en première année à l’université / Self-learning support : the case of LANSAD (non-specialist) French (ESP) students with an A2/B1 level of English in their first year at university

Macré, Nicola 07 February 2013 (has links)
The research that we have carried out concerns the link between a language learning self-Study environment and the conditions under which ESP first year university French students with an A2/B1 level of English are liable to improve acquisition. Its aim is to help them to "enjoy" learning English and operate a professional rationalization which takes into account the students specific needs, organizational difficulties and the institutions requirements. Our hypothesis is that a "blended" self-Learning environment can provide good quality language training and be accessible to these students, just as it is to be higher level students, if the support coincides with their sate of minds. The research-Action in three parts, based on qualitative and then quantitative data, begins with the identification of a certain amount of variables which favour or block the autonomisation process for these students. Then in the second part, a system is developped which takes these factors into account. After evaluation, in the third part, the transformations are adapted to accomodate a much larger number of students. In keeping with the action-Research cycles, suggestions to improve the environment developed are finally made.

Supplementary tuition in Mathematics: exploring the industry in the Eastern Cape

Coetzee, J. 30 November 2008 (has links)
This study explored and evaluated the prevalence of supplementary tuition in the teaching and learning of Mathematics/Mathematical Literacy in some high-performing schools of the East London district in the Eastern Cape. The study followed a descriptive survey design to address the research problem. Data were gathered using questionnaires for grade 11 learners and high school Mathematics/Mathematical Literacy teachers. The learners were the first group to be taught the Mathematics/Mathematical Literacy learning programme of the new National Curriculum Statement (NCS). The results showed that a fair number of learners (about 48%) were not satisfied with their performance in Mathematics/Mathematical Literacy and a large number of the learners (about 90%) considered a good pass in Mathematics/Mathematical Literacy as important, particularly for their future careers. A substantial proportion of learners (42%) expressed concern about the amount of school time allocated to Mathematics/Mathematical Literacy, and thought that this factor hampered the successful completion of the syllabus. Teachers who happened to be adequately qualified and experienced enough, struggled to complete the Grade 11 Mathematics syllabus in time and were concerned about misconceptions carried from lower classes. Teachers also expressed some concern about learners' lack of commitment to Mathematics/Mathematical Literacy. Learners seemingly took supplementary tuition as a way of overcoming their learning challenges. Of the three forms of supplementary tuition (i.e. private tuition, vacation classes and revising model/former examination papers) commonly available in the district, revising examination papers was preferred (about 83%) followed by private tuition at 81% and lastly vacation school. Learners spent 1.67 hours per week on average on supplementary tuition. More Mathematics learners (about 34%) than Mathematical Literacy learners (about 6%) make use of supplementary tuition. Based on these findings, it was concluded that supplementary tuition is not unique to schools that perform poorly, and even at high performing schools, factors exist which influence learners to take supplementary tuition. / MATH, SCIENCE & TECH EDU / MSC (MATHS,SCIENCE OR T/EDU)

Närståendes upplevelse av erhållet stöd från palliativa teamet - en registerstudie / Caregivers’ perception of the support received from the palliative team - a registry study

Nilsson, Sälj Astrid January 2017 (has links)
Background: There is an increased need for caregivers to provide in home care for the palliative patient. The number of hospital beds have decreased and the proportion of elderly in the population is expected to increase. The palliative team has an important role in providing support for the palliative patient and their caregivers during in home care. Purpose: Compilation of caregivers’ perception of the support from the palliative team during in home care for the palliative patient and their suggestions for improvements in support from the palliative team.Method: A quantitative and qualitative registry study. Data received from the Swedish Palliative Registry caregiver survey, summarized by the registry technician, was sent via a Microsoft Word file to the author. Descriptive analysis by calculations of frequency, percent, standard deviation and variation width. In the qualitative section all suggestions from caregivers’ were analyzed with summative content analysis. Keywords counted and divided into five codes; information needs, communication and dialogue, support interventions and level of care for the palliative patient. Result: A majority of the caregivers’ were satisfied the support received from the palliative team and information received regarding the follow-up interview after the passing of the palliative patient, knowledge of who was the primary care physician during the palliative patient’s last week of life and how to contact him/her, where to turn in an acute situation and the expected death of the palliative patient. Caregivers’ suggestions for an improvement in support included needs for increased information, better communication and dialogue, actions for support and level of care for the palliative patient. Conclusion: A majority of the caregivers were satisfied with the support received from the palliative team during the time they cared for the palliative patient at home. Caregivers’ suggestions included needs for increased information, better communication and dialogue, actions for support and level of care for the palliative patient.

Voropai, Olga January 2018 (has links)
The question that I would like to visualize, rethink and reassess is the relationship between the theoretical and practical knowledge in my profession. I work as a guidance counselor in the subject of mother tongue with newly arrived pupils. The aim with my essay is to process and stigmatize literary researches as well as my own theoretical and practical knowledge, thoughts, experiences and reflections. I am analyzing the profession of a guidance counselor and the everyday life in my situation as a mother tongue teacher. I stress the knowledge and abilities that are needed for a guidance counselor to analyze my own teaching methods on a deeper level. I hope that my experience, practical and theoretical knowledge can benefit colleagues in the same profession as me, and especially those who work with newly arrived students in Sweden. I have chosen to write this essay on the basis of my self-perceived events to analyze my own teaching methods for a better understanding. In my research, I came to the conclusion that both theoretical and practical knowledge are both equally as important in my profession.

Towards electronic assessment of web-based textual responses

Conradie, Martha Maria 30 June 2003 (has links)
Web-based learning should move away from static transmission of instruction to dynamic pages for effective interactive learning. Furthermore, automated assessment of learning should move beyond rigid quizzes or multiple-choice questions. This study describes the design, development, implementation, testing and evaluation of two prototypes of an electronic assessment tool to enhance the effectiveness of automated assessment. The tool was developed in the context of a distance-learning organisation and was built according to a development research model entailing a cyclic design-intervention-outcomes process. The first variant, E-Grader, was developed to test an algorithm for assigning marks to open-ended textual responses. The second variant, Web-Grader, was an interactive web-based extension of E-Grader. It provided immediate interactive support to students as they responded textually to content-based questions. This multi-disciplinary study incorporates principles and techniques from software engineering, formal computer science, database development and instructional design in the quest towards electronic assessment of web-based textual inputs. / Computing / M.Sc.
