Construction Supply Chain Management : Kan SCM koncept och metoder från tillverkningsindustrin användas i CSCM? / Construction Supply Chain Management : Can SCM concepts and methods from the manufacturing industry be used in CSCM?

Sosnowski, Dennis, Ternemo, Henrik January 2021 (has links)
This study aims to investigate CSCM and whether established SCM concepts and methods from the manufacturing industry can be used in CSCM. To answer the purpose, we asked the research questions "how do the conditions for SCM and CSCM differ?", "are SCM concepts and methods transferable from the manufacturing industry to the construction industry?", "which SCM concepts and methods do not seem suitable for CSCM?" and "which concepts and methods from traditional SCM appear to be useful for CSCM?". The theoretical framework consists of a selection of well-known SCM concepts and methods originating from the manufacturing industry and CSCM theory. The theories have been used to analyze the empirical data, which is qualitative in nature, in order to comprehensively present six interviewees' real picture of CSCM and the use of SCM concepts and methods.   The study concludes that SCM concepts and methods from the manufacturing industry can be used in the construction industry, but that modifications are required to better suit the unique nature of the construction industry. One concept that is not directly suitable for CSCM is JIT, because construction sites are not adapted to receive large numbers of deliveries as JIT often implies. However, adapting JIT to CSCM through the use of co-loading terminals to reduce the number of transports proves to be a popular approach by the interviewees. The analysis also shows that there is a transition in CSCM where the use of IT is becoming more common but is still not fully established. Based on the analysis, there seems to be a need for more developed collaborations in CSCM where direct supplier development was not common according to the interviewees. This seems to be due to the time-limited and decentralized project nature of the construction industry, which does not allow collaborations to lead to anything major. The interviewees perceive a high supply risk in CSCM. Terminals, among other things, are used to reduce the supply risk. Outsourcing of logistics to a third party is a concept used in CSCM to increase efficiency by enabling a focus on core competencies.

Fors, Mikaela, Borgström, Frida January 2024 (has links)
Background: T-Emballage is an established retailer of packaging materials with a specialization in customer-unique packaging solutions. For T-Emballage, it is crucial to adapt to the increasing importance of packaging materials as an opportunity for value creation and differentiation in an industry where customer demands are increasing, which requires active cooperation with suppliers to be at the forefront. Effective supplier development improves supplier capabilities and performance, helping buyers achieve cost reductions, productivity improvements, quality improvements and optimal resource utilization. SMEs are often characterized by limited resources, which makes it especially essential for these companies to develop the right supplier in the right way. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify and explore activities for supplier development based on a portfolio analysis and supplier evaluation, with a focus on improving the quality, price and service of T-Emballage’s various suppliers. Furthermore, the study aims to investigate the potential cost-related effects that can be achieved when implementing the recommended activities for T-Emballage’s strategic suppliers. By achieving this, the study aims to offer insights and recommendations for effective supplier development for retail SMEs in the packaging industry. Method: The study employs a qualitative approach with quantitative elements, where the first research question is primarily qualitative and the second, quantitative. Data collection was conducted through structured, semi-structured, and unstructured interviews. Furthermore, data was gathered from two focus groups, as well as directly from T-Emballage’s business system and statistical programs. Conclusion: The study finds that T-Emballage’s nine largest suppliers, in terms of spend, require different activities for supplier development. For the strategic suppliers, whose performance in the supplier evaluation had room for improvement, direct activities are recommended, in the categories of training and support, technical development, communication and collaboration as well as evaluation and assessment. For the strategic suppliers that have performed well based on the supplier evaluation, along with the bottleneck supplier, non-critical and the leverage supplier, various indirect supplier development activities are recommended. Furthermore, it appears that the implementation of the recommended supplier development activities for T-Emballage’s strategic suppliers potentially generate both cost increases and reductions. The indirect activities offer the greatest potential for cost reductions, while several of the direct ones were considered unfeasible considering, among other things, the resources that would be required. Contribution: The study contributes to filling a research gap regarding supplier development for retail SMEs in the packaging industry. By using portfolio analysis and supplier evaluation, the study offers a unique framework to determine appropriate supplier development activities for different suppliers. In addition, the results of the study constitute a significant decision basis for T-Emballage in terms of the choice of supplier development activities. The study’s societal contribution lies in promoting an ethical supply chain practice through supplier development, fostering long-term stability, potentially benefiting the wider community through improved economic growth and responsible business conduct.

Supply Chain Development within Volvo Penta Chain : Development through Supplier Relationship Improvement

Mattsson, Sandra, Pazirandeh, Ala January 2009 (has links)
In today global business market, concepts are moving towards inter-national and inter-firm in contrary to older days. This has made companies explore ways to leverage their supply chains, and to evaluate the role of suppliers in their activities. One result has been the increased outsourcing of activities and performance. This has heightened the role of suppliers ever more.Consequently, in order to maintain competitive in the market and to be able to satisfy the knowledgeable end customer, suppliers must be completely aligned with the core company and its objectives and performances. This goal is only gained through strategic benchmarking towards Supplier Development. With a large number of suppliers to deal with, it won’t be feasible to have partnership relationship with each. The strategic approach is to classify them in a manner suitable for the company and only then start from top of the list setting goals for the most prioritized. Before making any attempt in Supplier Relationship Development, the company must start from within setting the right mindset from top down, inside its own ground. Only then Supplier development will be aligned with the objectives of the company and the program will be integrated and successful. This research sought after ways to develop a strategic and systematic method of dealing with suppliers. This guideline was classified as a step by step map of a Supplier Development program. The study was conducted for Volvo Penta Vara Company, and as part of its Supply Chain Development Program. The findings from the company and literature were compared and analyzed and finally guidelines were developed. This report is the last part of the master’s studies in Industrial Engineering-Logistics at University of Borås. It gave us the opportunity to use what we had learnt during the programme. Considering the broadness of the subject we were after, this report meant a lot of work. However, this was the challenge we wanted and an intriguing journey where we learned a lot along the way.

Supplier relationship management - effectiveness analysis of development and qualification suppliers program for large companies.

Moura, Luciano Raizer 10 June 2009 (has links)
Large companies have adopted the strategy of vertical disintegration to focus on its core business and involving an increasing number of suppliers. WHY SUPPLIER DEVELOPMENT WORKS? A KNOWLEDGE-MANAGEMENT PERSPECTIVE

Chen, Liang 01 January 2015 (has links)
Supplier development (SD) has been intensively and increasingly used in practice and studied in academia. Many studies find that SD can generate operational, capability-based, attitudinal, and financial performance measures for both the supplying firm (supplier) and the buying firm (buyer), but very few studies systematically explain why SD yields supplier’s performance improvements and, in turn, buyer’s performance improvements. Using a meta-analysis approach, this dissertation finds that SD does lead to positive outcomes, but SD is found to have very weak or even negative relationship with performance improvements in some cases. Such findings further support the importance of examining the main research question: why SD works. In order to answer the main research question, this dissertation adopts a multiphase triangulation approach: theoretical construction, conceptual examination, and empirical examination. Doing so, this dissertation constructs and validates a knowledge management (KM) view of SD. The purpose of theoretical construction (Chapter 3) is to develop a KM view of supplier development via a systematic view of previous studies. Presented in Chapter 4, conceptual examination reveals that all SD activities can be subsumed into KM activities, and further conceptually supports the feasibility of the KM view in SD. Empirical examination, including a survey of 39 SD scholars and a survey of 295 SD practitioners (156 complete responses), is presented in Chapters 5 and 6. Most hypotheses are strongly supported, demonstrating the importance of the knowledge-management view of SD. Overall, this dissertation has both theoretical contributions for KM and SD sides, and practical contributions for researchers, practitioners, and educators/students. First, it contributes by supporting the addition of KM variables to other theories when explaining why SD works, confirming the role of KM in SD, providing a complete KM view of SD, and revealing why SD works. Second, it contributes by implementing mixed research methods, integrating multiple disciplines, and exemplifying collecting data on LinkedIn. Third, it contributes by offering a catalog of SD activities and guidance for designing, implementation, and evaluation of SD initiatives. Fourth, it contributes by advancing a mental model to understand SD literature. Conclusions, limitations, and future research directions are also discussed.
