Hardheaded & softhearted : an optimal oil depletion policy for economic sustainability in Saudi ArabiaAlkhalaf, Abdulrahman A. January 2018 (has links)
The literature focusing on the resource-curse commonly characterize oil-rich economies as weak and fragile. These literatures encourage diversification 'away' from oil in order to develop the economies, however, they often overlook the path for development. In contrast to this broad aim, this research bids to develop the economy 'based on' oil using Saudi Arabia as case study that can be valuable to similar resource-rich economies. The research seeks to understand how public policymaking can be used as a path to sustainable economy. It employs concepts of economic theory to design an optimal oil depletion policy framework that normatively geared towards achieving sustainable economic outcome. Sustainable economy is that simply beyond what often gauged by the GDP, an economy that is focused on long-term value creation that can shield the country against market upsets. The policy framework is grounded on economic sustainability, political economy, and the role of institutions and policymaking in managing resource-rich economies. As a result, the methodology under Normative Policy Analysis Framework was devised to outline the oil depletion policy model which will also be practically useful to propose, develop, and analyze other normative policies. The methodology also helped in identifying the specific parameters influencing the oil depletion policy in Saudi Arabia and conceivably in other oil-rich economies. As the sustainable economic welfare is, by definition, at the heart of policymaking, government intervention through effective policymaking and strong institutions plays an active role in managing market distortions, promote socioeconomic welfare, and achieve sustainability. Saudi Arabia should employ the optimal oil depletion policy to steer the economy through the sustainable path by leveraging on its national comparative advantage underpinned by resource endowment. The research also revealed that, Saudi Arabia should optimally balance between endogenous and exogenous variables in crafting its oil policy. This should lead the path to economic diversification and enable the country to wean itself from oil-dependence, disengage from in rent-seeking activities, and shift to long-term sustainable development objectives implied by development-led depletion model.

Based on the importance of the water element in the context of development economics and environmental issues, and with the knowledge of its political potential, the main objective of this thesis is to study the construction of the discourse on water in the Region of Murcia in order to describe the formation of public opinion, and identify the actors and factors involved in its production. Particularly interesting is to unravel the triggering component of a system of collective thinking that appears under the form of regional identity, which is built on the confrontation of us versus unsupportive others. One of the highlights will analyze the discourse on regional news and press articles published during election periods of the last thirty years. The aim is to determine the moments of greater and lesser impact on the conflict.

Issues Of Sustainable Development In Local And Global Context: The Case Of MuglaDogru, Evrim 01 August 2007 (has links) (PDF)
The sustainable development concept has entered the urban planning agenda of Turkey mainly after Habitat II Conference held in Istanbul in 1996. Turkey is trying to adopt the experiences of developed countries to improve the planning system including the sustainable development criteria. In this study, planning experience of Mugla is selected as a case study to criticize and evaluate on the changing planning process of cities in Turkey in terms of sustainable development criteria, which requires new approaches that are integrative and participative between local and global context.
In the case of Mugla, the urban form has shaped according to the development areas declared in the plans as additional districts to the traditional city since 1930s / that is, the result was not sustainable in the long run because of some environmental, socio-economic and political values. In the thesis, the problems of the case related to planning experience through sustainable development objectives are stated and solutions are proposed for a sustainable city.

A Critical Evaluation Of Governance In The Framework Of Rural Development In TurkeyPetek, Kovanci Shehrin 01 February 1995 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis attempts to construct a cross-section of governance with a critical viewpoint and an interdisciplinary approach, with a focus to planning. Governance is discussed by underlining the diversity of the underlying processes in social sciences, regarding various recent and important aspects of theoretical and conceptual discussions and subsequently rendering them measurable within the framework of the planning agenda. This thesis constitutes an effort in planning whereby the common denominator focuses on the characteristics and implementations of &lsquo / communicative&rsquo / , &lsquo / multi-actor&rsquo / , &lsquo / good&rsquo / and &lsquo / participatory governance&rsquo / within the planning domain.
Attempt has been made to evaluate the changing nature of the state-society interaction in Turkey, the transformation processes induced by social and economic restructuring and the democratization movements with respect to the implementation of governance mechanisms and principles. The main themes of the governance agenda in Turkey, the sources of the governance debate and its legitimacy have been set forth for discussion.
Attempt has been made to investigate governance as a critical instrument and from a process management perspective within the context of planning and public administration. This investigation has been conducted in view of the theoretical and of the conceptual discussions related to governance, within a comparative framework, with special reference to the Kö / ykent approach and the rural development literature.

Analýza indikátorů sociálního prostředí v obci na základě různých kritérií pro využití na lokální úrovni / Analysis of indicators of the social environment in the municipalities on the basis of various criteria for use at the local levelGalgonek, Dina January 2018 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with analysis of indicators of the social environment in small municipalities with up to 2 000 inhabitants based on various criteria for local use. The aim of the thesis is to propose an indicator set, which will best meet the requirements of such set in terms of applied criteria. The research question is: What indicators should be included in an indicator set for assessing the social environment of municipalities with up to 2 000 inhabitants to suit the differences and needs of these communities? The research problem addressed in the thesis concerns the possibility of measuring social sustainability at the local level, focusing on small municipalities with up to 2 000 inhabitants in the Czech Republic. The thesis also focuses on the possibility of projecting SDGs into this set. It is a qualitative research that involves the use of methods of document analysis, comparison, description, non-participant observation and semi-structured interviews. Based on the first four methods and theoretical knowledge, a preliminary design of the indicator set was created. Within the framework of semi-structured interviews, this design was discussed with representatives of selected small municipalities and other stakeholders. The edited set represents the final indicator set of the social...

Remote Microgrids for Energy Access in Indonesia—Part I: Scaling and Sustainability Challenges and A Technology OutlookSulaeman, Ilman, Simatupang, Desmon Petrus, Noya, Brandon Kristiano, Suryani, Amalia, Moonen, Niek, Popovic, Jelena, Leferink, Frank 04 May 2023 (has links)
Although Indonesia’s electrification ratio reached 99.2% in 2020, it has shown stagnating electrification since 2018. This is because most of the remaining areas that need to be electrified are remote and have unique characteristics that hamper implementation of microgrids for providing energy access. Furthermore, not only the deployment but also the long-term sustainability of microgrids is crucial for ensuring continuity of energy access. This paper aims to investigate the scaling and sustainability challenges of remote microgrid development in Indonesia by analyzing microgrids in the Maluku and North Maluku provinces. This study is a two-part publication; the first part focuses on identifying challenges in Indonesia’s remote microgrid development, while the second part focuses on potential technology solutions. In the first part, an assessment of energy access within a multi-tier framework was conducted, which was then analyzed using a multi-dimensional (institutional, social, technical, economic, environmental, and policy) approach adapted from the literature. The framework was expanded by mapping the challenges onto specific phases of the microgrid development, which is intended to be helpful for the parties involved in specific phases. It is shown that the challenges related to unclear land status, lack of social engagement, preliminary survey, technical and practical knowledge, and O&M procedures—especially for remote microgrids with renewable energy sources—are the most prominent issues. Additionally, issues caused by electrical events and environmental conditions such as relatively humid and high-temperatures, and uncontrolled vegetation, rodents, insects, and lizards are often found. Furthermore, a high-level technological outlook to address some of these issues is presented.

User-centered data provision for climate-friendly products developmentArndt, Stephan, Hänel, Frauke, Dos Santos, Maria, Zimmermann, Bernd 09 October 2024 (has links)
The development of climate-friendly products is a growing challenge for manufacturing companies facing increasingly serious concerns about global warming and the importance
of environmental protection. Design engineers have a shared responsibility to realize sustainable products with the minimum environmental impact as possible. To address this
challenge, the engineering perspective was analyzed and described using a systematic methodological approach. This approach is demonstrated in this paper by means of a
workshop and a persona description. The outcome enables user-centered analysis and proposed solutions specifically focusing on information perspectives in design engineering.

An ecology of change : teaching and learning for sustainable development in the tertiary education sector in the United Kingdom 2005-2014Sjerps-Jones, Henriette Maria January 2014 (has links)
In this thesis I advocate and evidence ESD through understanding and analysing the ecology of change in educational organisations, in particular Tertiary Education (TE), during the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (UNDESD, 2005-2014). I draw on my portfolio of research that examined various aspects of the efforts to mainstream ESD during this decade. My publications, which are referred to in this thesis, are based on experience of my own practice as lecturer, educational development manager and advocate of ESD at local, national and global level. My research approach is broadly based on action research principles. I argue that, to fully understand this complex change process, it is necessary to appreciate the role of the underpinning, and often conflicting, values in TE and how they influence the adoption of ESD. I further discuss the influence of both ‘top-down’ approaches, that are expressed in policies and frameworks, and ‘bottom-up’ approaches that are instigated by communities and individuals with special interests. The influence of the learning environment itself is also examined. Lastly, I make the case that the employment of appropriate action research methodologies can help with gaining a better understanding of this process as well as play a part in the process itself.

Metas globais de sustentabilidade da ONU: desafios e boas práticas de casos de sucesso do sistema agroalimentar no Ceará / UN global sustainability goals: challenges and good practices of successful cases on agrifood system in CearáSoriano, Diogo Furlan 22 August 2018 (has links)
This paper aims to analyze the impact of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) defined by the United Nations (UN) on the creation and deployment of projects focused on sustainable development, focusing on the perspective of small Brazilian farmers. In order to achieve this objective, a qualitative exploratory research was undertaken through case studies on the \"Food and Nutrition Security Network\" and \"Caatinga Climate\" projects, promoted by the City Hall of Maracanaú (CE) and the Caatinga Association , respectively. The sample was selected considering the presence of the projects in the 2013 edition of the Brazil ODM Award, its location in the most contemplated state (Ceará), and the division of the award in the categories \"Municipal Governments\" and \"Social Organizations\". The research included in-depth interviews and group interviews with leaders and beneficiaries of the two projects, which, together with the analysis of documents from primary and secondary sources and unstructured observation within the context of project execution, provided the elucidation of the roles and influence of the UN and public policies for the development and maturing of the studied projects. Following the investigation, it was found that UN initiatives under the Millennium Development Goals, although having a low impact on the motivation that led to the creation of the projects analyzed, have played a relevant role in their respective developments, contributing to their reorientation to the long-term planning and facilitating the establishment of strategic partnerships. In addition, the public policies have proved to be an important tool in the process of intervention and transformation of realities of social vulnerability and environmental degradation. It was concluded that the incentives promoted by international organizations through the definition of sustainable agendas, such as the MDGs, have great contributory potential for the consolidation of projects regarding the promotion of sustainable development.
