Standardization and modularization of low-voltageswitchgear in ABB’s HVDC-stations

Nilsson, Daniel, Berg, Sebastian January 2010 (has links)

/
This thesis investigates the possibilities to standardize and modularize the low-voltageswitchgear in ABB’s HVDC-stations. The reason for this is that the customized solutionthey use today take too much engineering and production time to meet the expectedincrease of projects. The report is based on thirteen stations in eight different closed or ongoing projects. Theselection was based on the station size, geographical location, commissioning year andstation type.In order to obtain a correct representation of the loads in the low-voltage switchgear, therelevant station documentation was reviewed and compiled in a database. The data wasthen analyzed to determine the most frequently occurring loads and their characteristics. The thesis shows that it’s possible to standardize some components in the low-voltageswitchgear. However, this report doesn’t take into consideration any possible increase oftotal size and cost. It also shows the most frequent sizes of the circuit breakers for each ofthe common loads. The standard proposition for the common loads was developed to cover all the occurringsizes of the circuit breakers in the stations. For the converter transformers coolingequipment there’s two different cubicles to choose from, while the remaining loads islimited to a single alternative. An alternative solution could be to develop a standard for each occurring station type. However, this would require that the data from a larger number of projects, for all stationtypes, are reviewed and compiled.

The dynamic behaviour of distance protection relays on series compensated lines under fault conditions.

Magagula, Xolani. January 2014 (has links)
M. Tech. Electrical Engineering / Investigates the reasons behind the poor performance of distance relays on series compensated lines. In order to achieve this objective, a case study will be established in a power system software (DigSilent Power Factory). Furthermore, a practical incident that occurred on Eskom's compensated network will be examined. However, prior to investigating the performance of the distance relay on transmission lines, there are some other critical aspects that have to be thoroughly understood. These aspects include amongst others: transmission line modelling ; numeric relay algorithms ; distance protection philosophies ; series compensation phenomena ; analysis of distance relays performance on both compensated and uncompensated lines and the action and influence of the MOV. The study will provide a better understanding regarding the dynamic behaviour of the impedance protection relay under fault conditions on series compensated lines and the behaviour of the MOV during a fault.

On-line, remote and automatic switching of consumers' connections for optimal performance of a distribution feeder.

Popoola, Olawale. January 2008 (has links)
M. Tech. Electrical Engineering / Investigates the growing consensus that significant advantages can be achieved through the automation of distribution feeder switches In order to ensure quality and reliability of supply to single phase consumers by electrical utilities, a need arose to minimize unbalance. it is then postulated the unbalance due to uneven distribution of single-phase loads at the secondary side of the distribution network can be minimized using automatic and remote sensing technology.

Safety implications of the introduction of a specially tested assembly into the South African national standard for low-voltage assemblies.

Bonner, Mark James. January 2004 (has links)
Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies with a rated short-circuit withstand strength above 10 kA, are required, by law, to conform to the South African standard, SANS 1473-1 (Low Voltage Switchgear and Controlgear Assemblies: Part 1: Typetested, partially type-tested and specially tested assemblies with rated short-circuit withstand strength above lOkA). Standard SANS 1473-1 stipulates three categories of assemblies i.e. type-tested, partially type-tested and specially tested assemblies. The specially tested assembly is unique to the South African market, while the other two categories are stipulated in standard SANS IEC 60439-1 (Low Voltage Switchgear and Controlgear Assemblies: Part 1: Type-tested and partially type-tested assemblies), which is internationally accepted in many countries as the applicable low-voltage assembly standard. Standard SANS 1473-1 specifies seven type-tests for certification as a type-tested assembly (TTA), but specifies, at most, three type-tests for certification as a specially tested assembly (STA). The underlying purpose of a technical standard is to provide for the safety of people and property, with the purpose of the research being twofold: 1. To investigate if the testing requirements specified for a specially tested assembly (STA), in accordance with standard SANS 1473-1, are correctly applied, and do not pose any safety risks. 2. To investigate any safety risks that stem from the fact that four type-tests are excluded for verification as a specially tested assembly (STA), as opposed to the seven type tests required for verification as a type-tested assembly (TTA). The document highlights the technical inadequacies of an assembly that is certified as a STA, in accordance with standard SANS 1473-1, and the potential safety risks associated with this type of assembly classification. / Thesis (M.Sc.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2004.

Návrh transformační stanice pro vyvedení výkonu z kogenerační jednotky / Design the Transformer Station for the Outgoing Power of Cogeneration Unit

Pastorek, Jaroslav January 2012 (has links)
The thesis deals with the design of a transformer station for the outgoing power of cogeneration unit with an electric capacity of up to 1 MW. The thesis describes the design procedure of individual devices such as a transformer with a nominal ratio 22/0,4 kV, high voltage switchgears and low voltage switchgears. With the proper selection of the transformer, along with the technical parameters, the economic benefits that come from its purchasing and operating costs with the transformer operation are also considered. Based on this, the economic comparison of selected types of oil transformers during 20 years is also developed. Another part of the thesis deals with HV and LV switchgears, which are dimensioned according to shortcircuit conditions in the transformer station. In conclusion this work deals with the grounding of a transformer station and design protection in accordance PPDS.

Klasická i neklasická řešení venkovních rozvoden 123 kV / Conventional and Unconventional Solving of 123 kV Outdoor Switchgears

Petrucha, Lukáš January 2008 (has links)
This graduation theses shows some of possible versions of outdoor switchgears with very high voltage, especially on the level 123 kV both concerning own complement of classic outdoor switchgears with devices as are overvoltages limiter, disconnecting switchgears, circuit breakers, etc., and compact connections. In the introduction of my theses there are explained basic ideas and theories of switchgears and described main devices and equipments which create classic (from equipment setting point of view) outdoor switchgears of very high voltage. Subsequently it describes possible ways of linking-up of these devices in the complex of switchgears themselves according to possible dispositions arranged and busbars systems. The same focus is dedicated to new, non-classic (non-standard solution in terms of devices solution), compact solving of outdoor very high voltage modules either by air isolated or by means of enclosed technology with gas SF6 which represent innovative solving first of all from reduction of built up area point of view which is very important from economic point of view especially during constructions of new switchgears. In the end of my theses there are mentioned also brief evaluations of producers and economics for development and operation of individual technologies. I used for my work materials of companies CEZ, a. s., Siemens, a. s. and Abb, a.s.

Förslag till övervakningslösning med värmekameror för Magnetgärdets transformatorstation / Suggestion for a monitoring solution with infrared cameras in the substation Magnetgärdet

Carse, Eddie, Garsallawi, Naman, Wennström-Juslin, Christina January 2010 (has links)
The substation called Magnetgärdet is located in Ludvika, Sweden and it is owned by Västerbergslagens Energi AB. The substation has recently been renovated and is now placed indoors, which reduces the influence of weather on the station. To decrease the need for personal supervision and increase the availability of the station a monitoring solution is needed. The purpose of this degree thesis is to examine if it is possible to monitor the condition of critical items in the station with infrared cameras. To determine this, theory on condition monitoring, thermography and thermal imaging cameras has been compiled together with relevant measurements and tests. The results are then discussed to see if a possible solution can be presented. Important criteria for making condition monitoring with infrared cameras possible have also been formulated in this degree thesis. The conclusion is that it is possible, but a complicated system is required. The solution we have given is based on different parts interplaying with each other and it should become a powerful monitoring system. It is however uncertain whether infrared cameras are the only and best tools, therefore other tools should be considered. It might be possible to use thermistors with, or instead of infrared cameras.

Hoffmann, José Ricardo 18 October 2013 (has links)
O algoritmo proposto, denominado GENIUS, apresentou desempenho relevante e baixa complexidade. / One of the most important components of network telecommunications is the router. Modern routers employ input-queued crossbar switches that require sophisticated scheduling techniques for packet transmission. The architecture of switches with input queues requires an scheduling process that establishes the transfer of packets from input to output ports. The performance of router depends of the scheduling algorithm, considering its throughput and complexity. In this work we survey the most relevant theoretical scheduling algorithms and propose a scheduling approach using genetic algorithms. We developed a simulator of discrete events for testing of schedulers performance. The proposed algorithm, called GENIUS, presents relevant performance and low complexity.
