Inklusion Als Herausforderung : eine empirisch-theologische Studie zu Behinderung und Leitungsverantwortung in Langes - und Freikirchen der Schweiz / The challenge of inclusion : an empirical-heological study of disability and leadership in state and free churches in SwitzerlandMerz, Oliver 11 1900 (has links)
This research project in empirical theology draws on qualitative empirical methods
to examine the topic of inclusion as it applies to disability and leadership in the
context of state and free churches in Switzerland. Its goal was to ascertain how
the challenging inclusion of religious leaders with physical, emotional or mental
impairments can be theoretically and practically improved within the Swiss
churches. From a theoretical point of view, aspects of labour theory and
ecclesiastical law that pose challenges for church leaders with disabilities were
foregrounded, as were theological positions defining the pastoral role. From a
practical point of view, structural, technical and similar barriers demanded
investigation, along with the adaptability of church practices and of work
structures. To that end, the topics of inclusion, disability and leadership
responsibility in the church were initially studied from a theoretical and
interdisciplinary perspective and the relationships between them were traced. Male
and female church leaders (clergypersons, priests, pastors and the like) affected
by the issue and employed by state and free churches in Switzerland were then
interviewed individually and together with their partners, their superiors and
members of local church councils. Analysis of the data thus gathered revealed
three empirical-theological models and three conceptions of how inclusion might
be theorized. These describe both numerous challenges in the inclusion of church
leaders with various disabilities and specific measures for improving the inclusion
of those affected. Among other results, it proved possible to derive and elaborate a
multifunctional practical concept for the inclusion of church leaders with disabilities
that has practical-theological applications in the context of the state and free
churches in Switzerland.
empirisch-theologisch bzw. qualitativ-empirisch untersucht.
In
architektonischen, technischen u.a.
drei empirisch-theologische Typen bzw. theoretische Inklusionskonzepte
herausgearbeitet.
freikirchlichen Kontext anwendbar machen. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / D. Th. (Practical Theology)

Wandel des Berufsbildes und Berufszufriedenheit von Chrischoma Pastoren in der Schweiz / Changing job descriptions and job satisfaction among Chrischona pastors in SwitzerlandBurghoff, Hartmut 11 1900 (has links)
Text in German and English / This MTh dissertation is about the meaning and change of the pastoral position and role as it
is reflected in pastoral theological literature of the last thirty years. For this purpose different
concepts of work satisfaction are described and applied to the pastoral context. Furthermore,
results of empirical investigations among ministers in German speaking and various other
countries are discussed and aspects of job satisfaction of pastors are presented. This is
followed by an investigation of changing expectations regarding the pastoral role which affect
the job satisfaction of a minister. A comparison of two church orders (1991 and 2003) from
Chrischona Switzerland demonstrates the changing job descriptions of pastors within a freechurch
denomination. The final chapter is a discussion of some pastoral theological
consequences of the relation between changing job descriptions and job satisfaction. / Practical Theology / M.Th. (Practical Theology)

Schwachheit und geistliche Leiterschaft : eine empirisch-theologische Untersuchung zu auswirkungen korperlich und seelisch Leidender geistlicher Leiter im Gemeindebau / Weakness and spiritual leadership : an empirical-theological examination of the effects of physically and psychologically handicapped spiritual leaders on church developmentMerz, Oliver 03 December 2010 (has links)
This empirical and theological project researches physical and emotional
weakness in the context of spiritual leadership, in order to discover what
consequences these impediments have on church development. Selected
representatives (national leaders - or at least regional leaders - of Swiss state and
free churches) have therefore been interviewed. It was possible to describe four
contrasting typologies which describe the different effects of handicapped leaders
and to deduce various consequences for the understanding of church leadership
and development.
This research is an attempt to contribute to a differentiated practice of dealing
with physically and emotionally suffering leaders in the field of church
development. It can be seen as a first explorative study of the evaluation of
institutional practice. / Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / M.Th. (Practical Theology)

Church & society in eighteenth-century Geneva, 1700-1789Powell McNutt, Jennifer R. January 2008 (has links)
This doctoral thesis, entitled “Church & Society in Eighteenth-Century Geneva, 1700-1789”, will seek to reappraise the relationship between religion and the Enlightenment through the context of eighteenth-century Geneva. Based on the perspectives of the philosophes, historians have generally understood the Enlightenment as the source of secularization and a period of religious decline. However, more recent work has begun to reassess the developments of religion in the eighteenth century beyond the philosophes, resulting in an increasingly multi-faceted picture of religion in the age of Enlightenment. This thesis will contribute to that revisionist effort. Eighteenth-century Geneva offers an intriguing example because it allows one to observe the encounter of the Reformation and the Enlightenment in the figurative meeting between Calvin and Voltaire. With that in mind, this work will re-examine the legacy of Calvin from 1700 to 1789 through a socio-historical and theological approach in order to analyze the functioning of religious life in Genevan society, the theological content and development of preaching and worship, and the clerical responses to incidents of conflict in relation to the government and the philosophes. The near totality of this research has stemmed from the study of manuscript sources within the Genevan archives, such as sermons, church and government records, and official and personal correspondence. Through the perspective of Geneva’s church and clergy, a far more complex picture of the dynamic between religion and the Enlightenment will emerge supporting the understanding that the Enlightenment occurred differently in different contexts and challenging the widespread attribution of the secularization theory and the decline of religion thesis to the eighteenth century.

The North Helvetic Flysch of eastern Switzerland : Foreland Basin architecture and modellingSinclair, Hugh D. January 1989 (has links)
The North Alpine Foreland Basin (NAFB) comprises sediments of late Eocene to middle Miocene age. The earliest deposits are the North Helvetic Flysch which are exposed in the regions of Glarus and Graubunden, eastern Switzerland. The Taveyannaz sandstones are the first thrust wedge (southerly) derived sediments of the North Helvetic Flysch. The Taveyannaz basin was divided into two sub-basins by a thrust ramp palaeohigh running ENE/WSW (parallel to the thrust front). Palaeocurrent directions were trench parallel towards the ENE. Sedimentation in the Inner basin (140m thick) is characterised by very thick bedded turbidite sands generated by thrust induced seismic events confined within the thrust-top basin. The Outer basin (240m min. thickness) comprises 10-15 sand packages (5-100m thick) formed by turbidite sands which are commonly amalgamated. Sedimentation in the Outer basin is considered to have been controlled by thrust-induced relative sea-level variations. The Inner basin underwent intense deformation at the sediment/water interface prior to the emplacement of a mud sheet over the basin whilst the sediments were partially lithified. Later tectonic deformation involved fold and thrust structures detaching in the underlying Globigerina marls. The stratigraphy of the NAFB can be considered as two shallowing upward megasequences separated by the base Burdigalian unconformity. This stratigraphy can be simulated by computer by simplifying the foreland basin/thrust wedge system into 4 parameters: 1) the effective elastic thickness of the foreland plate, 2) a transport coefficient to describe the erosion, transport and deposition of sediment, 3) the surface slope angle of the thrust wedge, 4) the thrust wedge advance rate. The Alpine thrust wedge underwent thickening during the underplating of the External Massifs at about 24-18Ma. This event is simulated numerically by slowing the thrust wedge advance rate, and increasing the slope angle and keeping all other parameters constant. This event causes rejuvenation of the forebulge, and erosion of the underlying stratigraphy, so simulating the base Burdigalian unconformity without recourse to eustasy or anelastic rheologies to the foreland plate.

A Masterable Past? Swiss Historical Memory of World War IIOrmes, Sara 01 December 2011 (has links)
After World War II, every country that had been touched by or involved in the war had to come to terms with its past. In the case of Switzerland, the Swiss government, the army and some of the country’s leadership established a strong official historical memory of the war, portraying Switzerland as a neutral, benevolent and well-fortified country that remained innocent and untouched by the war.
From the 1960s onwards, Swiss artists and intellectuals challenged these myths by presenting alternative views of the Swiss past in their work. Beginning in the 1970s, Swiss historians published an increasing amount of scholarly research concerning Switzerland’s World War II past, and challenging the official historical memory promoted by the government.
In the 1990s, after the discovery of thousands of dormant Swiss bank accounts containing Holocaust assets, Switzerland was forced to adopt a more realistic memory of its involvement in World War II. An Independent Commission of Experts, established by the Swiss government, conducted thorough research about Switzerland’s wartime involvement and published its Final Report in 2002.

Energy reconstruction on the LHC ATLAS TileCal upgraded front end: feasibility study for a sROD co-processing unitCox, Mitchell Arij 10 May 2016 (has links)
Dissertation presented in ful lment of the requirements for the degree of:
Master of Science in Physics
2016 / The Phase-II upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in the early 2020s
will enable an order of magnitude increase in the data produced, unlocking the
potential for new physics discoveries. In the ATLAS detector, the upgraded Hadronic
Tile Calorimeter (TileCal) Phase-II front end read out system is currently being
prototyped to handle a total data throughput of 5.1 TB/s, from the current 20.4 GB/s.
The FPGA based Super Read Out Driver (sROD) prototype must perform an energy
reconstruction algorithm on 2.88 GB/s raw data, or 275 million events per second.
Due to the very high level of pro ciency required and time consuming nature of
FPGA rmware development, it may be more e ective to implement certain complex
energy reconstruction and monitoring algorithms on a general purpose, CPU based
sROD co-processor. Hence, the feasibility of a general purpose ARM System on Chip
based co-processing unit (PU) for the sROD is determined in this work.
A PCI-Express test platform was designed and constructed to link two ARM
Cortex-A9 SoCs via their PCI-Express Gen-2 x1 interfaces. Test results indicate that
the latency of the PCI-Express interface is su ciently low and the data throughput is
superior to that of alternative interfaces such as Ethernet, for use as an interconnect
for the SoCs to the sROD. CPU performance benchmarks were performed on ve ARM
development platforms to determine the CPU integer,
oating point and memory
system performance as well as energy e ciency. To complement the benchmarks,
Fast Fourier Transform and Optimal Filtering (OF) applications were also tested.
Based on the test results, in order for the PU to process 275 million events per
second with OF, within the 6 s timing budget of the ATLAS triggering system, a
cluster of three Tegra-K1, Cortex-A15 SoCs connected to the sROD via a Gen-2 x8
PCI-Express interface would be suitable. A high level design for the PU is proposed
which surpasses the requirements for the sROD co-processor and can also be used
in a general purpose, high data throughput system, with 80 Gb/s Ethernet and
15 GB/s PCI-Express throughput, using four X-Gene SoCs.

The search for new physics in the diphoton decay channel and the upgrade of the Tile-Calorimeter electronics of the ATLAS detectorReed, Robert Graham January 2017 (has links)
A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Science, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, School of Physics. Johannesburg. February, 2017 / The discovery of the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland marks the beginning of a new era: Physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). A model is proposed to describe numerous Run I features observed with both the ATLAS and CMS experiments. The model introduces a heavy scalar estimated to be around 270 GeV and an intermediate scalar which can decay into both dark matter and SM particles. Three different final state searches, linked by the new hypothesis, are presented. These are the hh → γγb¯ b, γγ + Emiss T and high mass diphoton channels. No significant excesses were observed in any channel using the available datasets and limits were set on the relevant cross sections times branching ratios. The lack of statistics in the γγb¯ b analysis prevents any conclusive statement in regard to the excess observed with Run I data. Observing no excess in the γγ + Emiss T channel with the current amount of data is also consistent with the intermediate scalar decaying to SM particles. This could explain the excess of Higgs bosons produced in associations with top quarks in the multilepton final states observed in ATLAS and CMS in Run I and Run II. The work presented provides a deeper understanding on the underlying phenomenology of the hypothesis and provides a foundation for future work. The ATLAS detector underwent a stringent consolidation and validation effort before data taking could commence in 2015. A high voltage board was designed and implemented into a portable test-bench used in the certification and validation process. In addition to these efforts, the electronics on the ATLAS detector are being improved for the Phase-II upgrade program in 2024. A software tool has been designed which integrates the envisioned Phase-II backend infrastructure into the existing ATLAS detector control system. This software is now an ATLAS wide common tool used by multiple sub-detectors in the community. / XL2017
