Čínská vizuální propaganda / Chinese Visual Propaganda

Uhlikova, Jana January 2018 (has links)
Analysing discourse through visual units is certainly a very fascinating and interesting way of showing how propaganda posters regulate and shape the beliefs, values, and attitudes of social groups. Based on the theory of social constructionism, this research paper aims to explore and examine the use of verbal and nonverbal symbols between the propagandist and the audience in which the social positions of difference and authority are articulated. To accomplish this, I choose six propaganda posters that resonated strongly within the Chinese society to reflect how their symbolic messages and linguistic codes serve as transmitters of certain ideas. I incorporated testimonies of Anchee Min, Duo Duo, and Saul Yeung as a form of evidence in revealing the cultural significance, social practices, and power relations because they all have knowledge and experience in the cultural, social, and political discourse during the Cultural revolution. By applying a hermeneutic approach, this research paper deconstructs the symbolic meanings and linguistic codes of propaganda posters to reveal the notion of communication competence between the propagandist and the audience. Key words: China, propaganda, visual semiotics, symbols, discourse

A Display System for Bliss Symbolics

Callway, E.G. 04 1900 (has links)

A microprocessor driven display was built and programmed for the storage and reproduction of Bliss symbols. An explanation is offered for the success of the symbol language in teaching the handicapped.

The hardware was designed to be inexpensive enough for classroom use, but still deliver adequate flexibility and resolution. Due to the complexity and variety of the symbols a method of data compaction was developed to reduce the required storage space.

Initial tests are presented and suggestions are made for continuing the work.
/ Thesis / Master of Engineering (MEngr)

The epistemic status of religious symbols in the thought of Wilbur M. Urban

Butler, Roy Willington, Jr. January 1966 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University / PLEASE NOTE: Boston University Libraries did not receive an Authorization To Manage form for this thesis or dissertation. It is therefore not openly accessible, though it may be available by request. If you are the author or principal advisor of this work and would like to request open access for it, please contact us at open-help@bu.edu. Thank you. / The purpose of this dissertation is to ascertain the epistemic status of religious symbols in Urban's thought. This involves the clarification and evaluation of the basic concepts in his religious epistemology--meaning, dialectic, truth, and verification--as they relate to his philosophy of language. The meaning of religious terms is intuitive connotation or indirect reference to intuitive universals, which is a genuine level of meaning created by the religious speech community in its attempt to express the axiological character of reality. That is, religious language is referential and cognitive in that it expresses true or false judgments of reality. Religious language is also expressive of the intuition of God in human experience. Thus, the religious statement "God is a Person" is conceived to be a judgment, the ontological intention of which is ultimate reality; but it is also a judgment rooted in religious experience. Thus, religious judgments are meaningful or cognitive because they are symbolically representative of deity. Religious myth, Urban believes, constitutes a special case of intuitive connotation, and fulfills the requirements of representation and creativity necessary for the meaningful expression of the religious referent [TRUNCATED] / 2031-01-01

Krikščioniškieji simboliai reklaminėse kampanijose ir visuomenės reakcijos: 2006 – 2013M. Lietuvos, JK ir JAV atvejai / Christian symbols in advertising campaigns and reactions in the societies: period 2006 – 2013, Lithuania, the UK and the USA

Gutkovaitė, Ieva 10 June 2014 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / In this masters degree thesis - 'Christian symbols in advertising campaigns and reactions in the societies: period 2006 – 2013, Lithuania, the UK and the USA', the phenomenon of using the Christian symbols in advertising is investigated by comparison of case studies (period 2006 - 2013) of Lithuania, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. The purpose of the study is to determine how this phenomenon is seen, understood and spread in the respective societies. The study is based on research on the relation between cause and effect in the public media, caused by said advertising campaigns. Therefore, theoretical framework and two different empirical methods are employed: (1) advertisement content semiotic and visual analysis; (2) and the quantitative and qualitative content analysis of publications by major internet publishers.

Telling tales : pictograms as a visual voice

Scott, Lee 17 October 2013 (has links)
A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for a Master’s Degree in Technology: Graphic Design, Durban University of Technology, 2013. / In this critically reflective self-study I have illustrated how my research in the field of Graphic design has been purposeful in creating a visual voice to express myself, improve my practice as an artist, teacher, and visual activist and in turn create an alternate voice for others. My study includes the conceptualization of the pictographic cards that I have named PicTopics, their value as an educational tool and their pertinence as visual prompts. My research questions have included exploring the role of the PicTopics in communicating a story or message, and how they could be pertinent to my practice as an artist, researcher, teacher and social being. My methodology, under the umbrella of self-study, has explored the living social, educational, and artistic values associated with fun, playing, creativity and wellbeing as a way to improve my practice. I used the PicTopic in a variety of settings - with the public at an art gallery to record their stories, in the classroom as creative prompts and as a way to inspire and conceptualize the practical artistic component of this study. I believe that the PicTopics when used as prompts can trigger and cultivate storytelling, enable engagement between people and open communication channels between the educator, and students. The PicTopics have become a thread between my living theories which are linked with my values and beliefs, my practice as an artist and my role as an educator and social transformer.

Den moderna frälsaren : En komparativ analys av Harry Potter och Jesus

Thorsell, Jennifer January 2016 (has links)
The books about Harry Potter have been read by people all over the world, but is there some-thing more to them than just the magical adventure novels they first appear to be? Many have discovered the multiple layers of understanding that the author J. K. Rowling has put in her famous books, and since I was curious about a few features in the story that reminded me of certain elements which can be found in the Bible, I decided to find out more. The following essay investigates which specific features in the books about Harry Potter that can be traced to which specific parts of the Bible. The main focus is the comparison between the character Harry Potter and Jesus Christ. I use a comparative analyzing method and secure my theory with quotes from both Harry Potter and the Bible. In the end, I found a wide range of similarities between the two characters, and in my discus-sion, I raised the question whether or not the likenesses were intentional by Rowling. I reached the conclusion that the authors intention is not as important as the reader’s interpreta-tion and what they can learn from it.
