Analysis of Hardware and Software Approaches to Embedded In-Circuit Emulation of MicroprocessorChen, Hsin-Ming 14 September 2001 (has links)
An in-circuit emulator (ICE) is an important tool for the development of microprocessor-based systems. External ICE boxes are complex and expensive piece of hardware so their use is usually limited to debugging phases of the microprocessor-based systems that involve hardware/software integration or investigation of real time I/O or bus events. On the other hand, a ROM monitor is inexpensive, but provides less observablity for the microprocessor¡¦s operations. In either case, the design practice of the ICE devices is usually independent to the design task of the microprocessor itself. The performance and cost of the ICE devices are not relevant to the microprocessors since they are two different entities. The ICE¡¦s are used only during the development/debugging of the microprocessor-based systems by substituting the original microprocessor on the socket with the ICE. The ICE is unplugged after debugging and the original microprocessor is placed back into the socket for normal operations of the microprocessor-based systems. Therefore, the performance and cost of the ICE¡¦s do not impact these of the microprocessor-based systems because the ICE¡¦s do not exist in them.
We then define three feasible solutions software, hardware and hybrid) and integrate them with a synthesizable ARM7 icroprocessor core. The microprocessors with the embedded ICE¡¦s are synthesized and simulated to analyze and compare the corresponding hardware/software performance and cost and the debugging features of these approaches.

The past decade has shown distinct advances in the theory of multiple input multi output techniques for wireless communication systems. Now, the time has come to demonstrate this progress in terms of applications. This thesis introduces implementation of Schnorr- Euchner strategy based decoding algorithm applied on Altera system-on-chip (Stratix EP1S10F780C6) with Nios embedded processor. The lattice decoder is developed on FPGA using VHDL. The preprocessing part of algorithm is targeted for Nios embedded processor using C language. A controller is also designed to interface and communicate between the Nios embedded processor and lattice decoder.

Digital Surveillance Based on Video CODEC System-on-a-Chip (SoC) PlatformsZhao, Wei 04 November 2010 (has links)
Today, most conventional surveillance networks are based on analog system, which has a lot of constraints like manpower and high-bandwidth requirements. It becomes the barrier for today’s surveillance network development. This dissertation describes a digital surveillance network architecture based on the H.264 coding/decoding (CODEC) System-on-a-Chip (SoC) platform. The proposed digital surveillance network architecture includes three major layers: software layer, hardware layer, and the network layer. The following outlines the contributions to the proposed digital surveillance network architecture. (1) We implement an object recognition system and an object categorization system on the software layer by applying several Digital Image Processing (DIP) algorithms. (2) For better compression ratio and higher video quality transfer, we implement two new modules on the hardware layer of the H.264 CODEC core, i.e., the background elimination module and the Directional Discrete Cosine Transform (DDCT) module. (3) Furthermore, we introduce a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) sub-system on the main bus of H.264 SoC platforms as the major hardware support system for our software architecture. Thus we combine the software and hardware platforms to be an intelligent surveillance node. Lab results show that the proposed surveillance node can dramatically save the network resources like bandwidth and storage capacity.

Embedded In-Circuit Emulation and Tracing for Bus-based System-on-Chip IntegrationKao, Chung-fu 10 September 2007 (has links)
In the System-on-Chip (SoC) era, common industry estimates are that functional verification takes approximately 70% of the total effort on a project. For the time-to-market constrain, it¡¦s a challenge to reduce the SoC verification/debugging time efficiently. In an SoC, a microprocessor is an essential part of it. First, we focus the debugging problem on microprocessors. An in-circuit emulation (ICE) module that can be embedded with a microprocessor core. The ICE module, based on the IEEE 1149.1 JTAG architecture, supports typical debugging and testing mechanisms, including boundary scan paths, partial scan paths, single stepping, internal resource monitoring and modification, breakpoint detection, and mode switching between debugging and normal modes. The architecture of the ICE module is parameterized and retargetable to different microprocessors. It has been successfully integrated with two microprocessors with significantly different architectures: one 8-bit industrial embedded microcontroller HT48x00 and one 32-bit ARM7-like embedded microprocessor. FPGA prototypes and chip implementation have been accomplished. Experiments show that real-time (on-line) debugging at full speed is possible with the embedded ICE at a minor gate count overhead.
Collecting the program execution traces at full speed is essential to the analysis and debugging of real-time software behavior of a complex system. However, the generation rate and the size of real time program traces are so huge such that real-time program tracing is often infeasible without proper hardware support. This paper presents a hardware approach to compress program execution traces in real time in order to reduce the trace size. The approach consists of three modularized phases: (1) branch/target filtering, (2) branch/target address encoding and (3) Lempel-Ziv-based data compression. A synthesizable RTL code for the proposed hardware is constructed to analyze the hardware cost and speed and typical multimedia benchmarks are used to measure the compression results. The results show that our hardware is capable of real time compression and achieving compression ratio of 454:1, far better than 5:1 achieved by typical existing hardware approaches. Furthermore, our modularized approach makes it possible to trade off between the hardware cost (typically from 1K to 50K gates) and the achievable compression ratio (typically from 5:1 to 454:1).
For SoC debugging, bus signal tracing represents that the information which is generated from the system can be collected for later observation, debugging and analysis. However, the generation rate and the size of real time system traces are so huge such that a mechanism for system tracing that can reduce trace size efficiently is needed. In this paper, we propose a multi-resolution bus trace approach. The hardware bus tracer consists of two major stages: (1) signal monitor & tracing stage, and (2) trace compression stage. In the first stage, designer can trace the signals in detail or in rough depends on the debug purpose. In other word, the multi-resolution trace approach provides the trade-off between trace accuracy and trace depth. In the second stage, the bus tracer compresses the trace size efficiently; therefore the capability of on-chip storage is increased. In the host, the analyzer tool decompresses the trace data for future observation and debugging.

FUNCTIONAL ENHANCEMENT AND APPLICATIONS DEVELOPMENT FOR A HYBRID, HETEROGENEOUS SINGLE-CHIP MULTIPROCESSOR ARCHITECTUREHegde, Sridhar 01 January 2004 (has links)
Reconfigurable and dynamic computer architecture is an exciting area of research that is rapidly expanding to meet the requirements of compute intense real and non-real time applications in key areas such as cryptography, signal/radar processing and other areas. To meet the demands of such applications, a parallel single-chip heterogeneous Hybrid Data/Command Architecture (HDCA) has been proposed. This single-chip multiprocessor architecture system is reconfigurable at three levels: application, node and processor level. It is currently being developed and experimentally verified via a three phase prototyping process. A first phase prototype with very limited functionality has been developed. This initial prototype was used as a base to make further enhancements to improve functionality and performance resulting in a second phase virtual prototype, which is the subject of this thesis. In the work reported here, major contributions are in further enhancing the functionality of the system by adding additional processors, by making the system reconfigurable at the node level, by enhancing the ability of the system to fork to more than two processes and by designing some more complex real/non-real time applications which make use of and can be used to test and evaluate enhanced and new functionality added to the architecture. A working proof of concept of the architecture is achieved by Hardware Description Language (HDL) based development and use of a Virtual Prototype of the architecture. The Virtual Prototype was used to evaluate the architecture functionality and performance in executing several newly developed example applications. Recommendations are made to further improve the system functionality.

This thesis involves modeling, design, Hardware Description Language (HDL) design capture, synthesis, implementation and HDL virtual prototype simulation validation of an interconnect network for a Hybrid Data/Command Driven Computer Architecture (HDCA) system. The HDCA is a single-chip shared memory multiprocessor architecture system. Various candidate processor-memory interconnect topologies that may meet the requirements of the HDCA system are studied and evaluated related to utilization within the HDCA system. It is determined that the Crossbar network topology best meets the HDCA system requirements and it is therefore used as the processormemory interconnect network of the HDCA system. The design capture, synthesis, implementation and HDL simulation is done in VHDL using XILINX ISE 6.2.3i and ModelSim 5.7g CAD softwares. The design is validated by individually testing against some possible test cases and then integrated into the HDCA system and validated against two different applications. The inclusion of crossbar switch in the HDCA architecture involved major modifications to the HDCA system and some minor changes in the design of the switch. Virtual Prototype testing of the HDCA executing applications when utilizing crossbar interconnect revealed proper functioning of the interconnect and HDCA. Inclusion of the interconnect into the HDCA now allows it to implement dynamic node level reconfigurability and multiple forking functionality.

As single-chip systems are predicted to soon contain over a billion transistors, design methodologies are evolving dramatically to account for the fast evolution of technologies and product properties. Novel methodologies feature the exploration of design alternatives early in development, the support for IPs, and early error detection — all with a decreasing time-to-market. In order to accommodate these product complexities and development needs, the modeling levels at which designers are working have quickly changed, as development at higher levels of abstraction allows for faster simulations of system models and earlier estimates of system performance while considering design trade-offs.
Recent design advancements to exploit instruction-level parallelism on single-processor computer systems have become exceedingly complex, and modern applications are presenting an increasing potential to be partitioned and parallelized at the thread level. The new Single-Chip, Message-Passing (SCMP) parallel computer is a tightly coupled mesh of processing nodes that is designed to exploit thread-level parallelism as efficiently as possible. By minimizing the latency of communication among processors, memory access time, and the time for context switching, the system designer will undoubtedly observe an overall performance increase. This study presents in-depth evaluations and quantitative analyses of various design and performance aspects of SCMP through the development of abstract hardware models by following a formalized, well-defined methodology. The performance evaluations are taken through benchmark simulation while taking into account system-level communication and synchronization among nodes as well as node-level timing and interaction amongst node components. Through the exploration of alternatives and optimization of the components within the SCMP models, maximum system performance in the hardware implementation can be achieved. / Master of Science
