Why Orville and Wilbur Built an Airplane

Jenkinson, John S. 08 1900 (has links)
This dissertation comprises two sections. The title section collects a volume of the author's original poetry, subdivided into four parts. The concerns of this section are largely aesthetic, although some of the poems involve issues that emerge in the introductory essay. The introductory essay itself looks at slightly over three centuries of poetry in English, and focuses on three representative poems from three distinct periods: the long eighteenth century and the Romantic period in England, and the Post-war period in the United States. John Dryden's translation of Ovid's "Cinyras and Myrrha," John Keats' "Ode to a Nightingale," and James Dickey's "The Sheep Child," whatever their stylistic and aesthetic differences may be, all share a concern with taboo. Each of the poems, in its own way, embraces taboo while transgressing societal norms in order to effect a synthesis that merges subject and object in dialectical transcendence. For Dryden, the operative taboo is that placed on incest. In his translation of Ovid, Dryden seizes on the notion of incest as a metaphor for translation itself and views the violation of taboo as fructifying. Keats, in his Nightingale ode, toys with the idea of suicide and reconstructs a world both natural and mythic on the ephemeral foundation of the nightingale's song. Closer to our own time, James Dickey, in "The Sheep Child," envisions a circumstance that forges a union, however transient, between the human and the natural worlds---a union that, in violation of religious taboo, directs gentle parody at the merger of the human world with the divine. Each of the poets employs, in Keats' words, "negative capability" as a tool with which to escape the prescribed order of existence. This ability to "live with uncertainties" beyond the world's conventions fuels the poets' invocation of epiphany, of satori, of the transcendent moment.

Taboo advertising - Response to taboo in advertising - A study of the influence of age and gender / Tabureklam: Respons på tabubelagd reklam : En studie av kön och ålders påverkan

Schnaider, Jonathan, Härnsäter, David January 2015 (has links)
Problem: Consumer characteristics have proved to be important influencers in how advertisements are perceived among consumers. Researchers have started to investigate if this assumption is valuable also in special and uncommon marketing strategies. A new field of research regarding advertising is the study of taboo themes. Researchers have so far mainly investigated how consumer respond to advertisements containing themes of taboo, but less research examines the influence of consumer characteristics. The questions is to which degree, characteristics like age and gender affect the response consumers have towards taboo advertising. This question is of importance, as it will impact the strategy marketers can use when deciding which consumers to target. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate how age and gender of Swedish consumers influence how they respond to sexual appeal and violence within advertising. To add further depth to the study, three research questions have been constructed. Method: In order to draw a conclusion that gives answers to our purpose, a quantitative research approach has been employed. The data was collected through a questionnaire among Swedish consumers, with 190 respondents. This primary data collection was performed over an online survey tool and the result was later investigated in SPSS. The questionnaire included advertisements that contain themes of sexual appeal and violence, in a way to measure consumers response. Conclusion: The conclusion succeeds to answer the purpose of the study as well as the three research questions. The main findings are that the characteristics age and gender have an influence on the response most of the times. However, this influence seems not to be the only factor, but instead other characteristics and aspects seem also to contribute to the response of consumers. Two cases which both affect the outcome is if a product is of highor low-involvement or if the taboo used is congruent with the product. The influence is different depending on investigating age or gender.

Kvinnors upplevelse och erfarenheter av att leva med urininkontinens : En situation att acceptera och anpassa sig efter / Women’s experience of living with urinary incontinence : A situation to accept and adapt to

Lindqvist, Erica, Heimdahl, Maria January 2017 (has links)
Background: Urinary incontinence denotes an involuntary leakage from the bladder which can affect women of all ages, but leakage problems are often more common with rising age. It is a common issue, however there is a large unrecorded number of women who do not seek medical attention for their urinary incontinence. Urinary incontinence is very costly for the society because of the medical and social disability it causes the affected. Aim: To illuminate the experiences of women living with urinary incontinence Method: A literary study was done where nine scientific articles were examined and analyzed according to a five step model. Results: The women experienced their urinary incontinence as taboo and shameful. The issue was too intimate and private and therefore unnatural to talk about. Their leakage lead to fear and nervousness which made them end up in a vulnerable situation. This affected them on several emotional levels both psychosocial, psychological and physical. The women experienced an ignorance and a nonchalant attitude from their care providers which caused an hesitancy in their search of healthcare. They experienced that their bodies were unreliable which lead to a reduced spontaneity and restrictions in life. Conclusion: Urinary incontinence is not solely an issue with leaking urine, it is affecting the women's lives as a whole on many levels. The hindrance that the urinary incontinence caused the women on a daily basis made them feel a sense of loss and affected their joy and zest of life. It requires an improvement of healthcare praxis in order to meet these women in a professional and trustworthy manner.

Samtal om sexuell hälsa i en vårdkontext : Sjuksköterskors inställning till att tala om sexualitet - en litteraturöversikt / Discussing sexual health in a caring context : Nurses’ attitudes towards discussing sexuality – a literature review

Jönsson, Marcus, August Panourov, Cyril January 2015 (has links)
Background: Sexuality, defined as love, intimacy and sex, is a part of patients’ overall health and concerns the quality of life. Patients have needs and wishes to discuss how the treatment and diagnosis might affect their sexual functioning as a number of medical conditions also can lead to sexual difficulties. Research has shown that nurses do not meet the patients’ need to discuss sexual matters. Aim: To describe nurses’ approach towards discussing sexuality with patients. Method: A literature review described by Friberg (2012) was conducted. The result of three qualitative and eight quantitative studies was summarized and then organized into groups depending on the similarities and differences. Results: The results outlined in four themes; The talk not taking place, Hindering factors, Promoting factors and Organizational factors. Nurses were knowledgeable in regards to how treatment and diagnosis affected patient sexuality. Even though they recognized the importance of sexuality for patients and felt responsible, nurses did avoid conversation about sexuality. Hindering factors stated by the nurses were lack of competency, considering sexuality as a private and taboo subject and feeling uncomfortable talking about sexual issues. Factors promoting conversation about sexuality were amongst others work experience and education. The organization may affect whether the nurses bring up the subject or not. Discussion: Despite that the society today is more open towards sexuality, the taboo of sexuality remains a fact in health care. A trusting and caring relationship between nurse and patient described by among others Travelbee could open up a permissive atmosphere, overcome taboos and facilitate discussions on sensitive issue. Models of sexual communication such as the PLISSIT-model could be used.
