Vnímání fenoménu smrti: výzkum pohřebních rituálů / Phenomenon of death: research of burial rituals

Hříbalová, Marta January 2011 (has links)
The thesis concerns on the phenomenon of death and it's tabooisation in the modern Czech society. Attitude, whether the death is taboo or not, divides not only the society but also the scientists of sociological field. In the first part it sets up basic arguments of both opposing groups by analyzing relevant scientific and general fiction literature. The other part of the thesis concerns on author's own research, with an aim to find out, what attitude to death and burial rituals is adopted by informants belonging to younger-middle aged generation living in the Czech Republic, primarily in Prague. The research uses qualitative methods, method of concerned and unconcerned observation on funeral ceremonies and semi-structured interviews with a group of informants. Navigating a taboo topic in parent-child communication: Young adult stories about conversations with their parents about pornography

Joshua D Johnson (11199111) 29 July 2021 (has links)

Although many communication scholars have explored how parents and children navigate difficult conversations about taboo topics, little to no research exists concerning pornography, specifically from the perspective of the child. To fill this research gap, the following qualitative study utilized a narrative framework and methodology to explore characteristics in parent-child conversations about pornography that illicit positive or negative perceptions from children about those conversations. 18 young adults (18-25 years old) participated in semi-structured interviews in which they shared stories about conversations they had with their parents about pornography. Five major themes surfaced from the thematic analysis of the data: (1) open/closed relationship, (2) discussion-/lecture-based conversation structure, (3) specificity/ambiguity of conversation details, (4) affirmation/denial of curiosity, and (5) appropriate/inappropriate conversation context. The findings have theoretical implications and contextual contributions for family communication scholars in further exploring the topic of pornography as well as practical insights for parents to reflect upon in seeking to strengthen their conversations about pornography with their children.

The Nuclear Taboo: A Real Effect on Public Perception?

Kennedy, Cody Marlin 01 January 2019 (has links)
This research experiment investigated whether the nuclear taboo was more influential on participants when considering the use of nuclear weapons, or if the participants were influenced more by cost-benefit analysis when deciding to use nuclear weapons. In this study, we presented a fake military scenario to respondents with a total of eight different versions that either did or did not include: genocide, high casualties, and nuclear weapons. Participants could then select whether they agreed, disagreed, or needed more information as there answer. Breaking respondents down into these three groups, the results show that for all three respondent groups the independent variable with the strongest effect was nuclear weapons. The weakest variable was high casualty rates, while genocide had the second strongest effect on the respondents' decision-making process. These findings indicate that respondents were affected by the nuclear taboo and were less likely to cost-benefit analyze when giving their answer to the military proposal.

A Semantic Analysis of the Symbolic and Non-Symbolic Functioning of Certain Taboo Terms Used in Three Contemporary Films

Hurlbut, Marilyn Anne 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis examines four taboo words (Jesus, God, fuck, ass) used in the films Jaws, Shampoo, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. The dominant method of research is semantic, drawing on language theories of I.A. Richards and Alfred Korzybski. Investigation led to these conclusions: (1) Symbolic use of taboo terms is accompanied by positive attitudes, while non-symbolic use, which is more frequent, is accompanied by negative or neutral attitudes. (2) Casual non-symbolic pronunciation is leading to separation of the symbol from its referent. (3) Through this methodology, it is possible to ascertain the speaker's intent and his attitude toward the audience, but not his attitude toward the referent.

À guisa de uma tipologia para os tabus lingüísticos - proposta para um glossário / a typology of the linguistics taboos existent in the Brazilian Linguistic Atlases - a glossary proposition

Almeida, Laura de 28 April 2008 (has links)
The main objective of this research is to present a typology of the linguistics taboos existent in the Brazilian Linguistic Atlases. The corpus of this paper is made up of the answers presented by the interviewers in six Brazilian Linguistics Atlases, that is to say, Atlas Prévio dos Atlas Prévio dos Falares Baianos (APFB), Atlas Lingüístico de Sergipe I (ALS I), Atlas Lingüístico de Sergipe II (ALS II), Esboço para um Atlas Lingüístico de Minas Gerais (EALMG), Atlas Lingüístico da Paraíba (ALPB) e o Atlas Lingüístico do Paraná (ALPR). It will be based on the questionnaire \"Questionário Semântico-lexical (QSL)\" that consists of \"Questionários 2001- Projeto Atlas Lingüístico do Brasil (ALiB)\", from which we will use only the questions referring to the semantics field worked on. We selected six semantic fields to work on in this analysis, which are: atmosphere phenomena, human body, religion and beliefs, diseases, cycles of life and living and social behavior. Based on Guérios (1979), we will make a preliminary study of the linguistic taboo manifestation in the Portuguese language and we will present the means of substitution of the linguistic variants found in the linguistic atlases. A glossary having terminological files about the linguistics taboo typology will be presented at the very end. Finally, this paper tends to contribute, to a small extent, to the richness of these linguistic taboos.

It has the overall objective to analyze the rhetorical relations between speaker and audience in communicative situations involving the use or not of linguistic taboos and discursive taboos. To make this possible, we reflect about the nature of myth, totem, the theological and religious discourse in the constitution of linguistic and discursive taboos. We distinguish forbidden word of prohibited speech. Supported by rhetorical concepts, we analyze a speech given in 2010 by Pastor Claudio Duarte, a member of the Baptist Church Mount Horeb, located at Rio de Janeiro, in an event called IV School Leaders Victoria Association in Christ, in order to evidence present taboos in speeches that are part of the Christian religion. We analyzed in the text, the constitution of the ethos, the use of logos for the maintenance of the forbidden and the move of pathos in view of taboos. We conclude that the rhetorical strategy used by the pastor, focuses on (addresses, evokes) forbidden topics, aimed at the maintenance and transmission of ideas and ideals conservatives disguised as modernity.
