Conflito e cortesia: oportunidades para a prática do discurso argumentativo, na interação professor-aluno / Conflict and courtesy: opportunities for the practice of argumentative discourse in teacher-student interaction

Rosana Ribeiro Ramos 18 June 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate whether or not there is favorable opportunity to argumentation practice in the teacherstudent interaction. Because this interaction is mediated by language, it is our interest to investigate how language-built meanings influence the participants involved, collaborating (or not) for participants actions towards the argumentative speech practice. The research was carried out through class observations at a Center for Young Adults Education (CIEJA). Throughout observations, we were able to perceive that the use of politeness strategies always lessened conflicts; on the other hand, the conflict inhibition generated the inhibition of the argumentation strategies practices. This thesis is the continuation of the Masters Degree research, from which resulting data from one of the observed schools was considered. Differently than observed in the CIEJA environment, it was possible to identify, in the High School classrooms, the existence of extremely explicit conflicts, which led to disrespect and dissatisfaction among teachers and students. Therefore, there was not any speech fluidity in the High School groups and that kind of interaction did not promote the argumentation speech practice. From the observed data, during the Masters Degree phase, as well as nowadays in the Doctoral Degree (the first one, characterized by overt expression of conflicts; the second one by inhibition of conflicts), we have come to consider that conflicts shouldnt be minimized so as to inhibit the argumentation practices, but instigated and taken into consideration for the exposition and defense of opinions. For that matter, we also believe there is the need for the teacher to practice the courteous style, further beyond the politeness practices. Partially based on the theory developed by Muro (2005), we understand that the courteous style in itself contains the stepping aside from the one who is the socially legitimated as the power holder - the teacher. This conscious act is meant to lead the student to develop himself in the art of argumentation practice. The data analysis of both institutions were intertwined by the analysis of Laurent Cantets movie Entre Les Murs, whenever there was a need to compare with a diverse way of acting. As theoretical foundations, we based our study in Conversational Analysis (AC), in Pragmatics and in Speech Analysis (AD) theories. The results analysis have allowed us to confirm our research hypothesis, that are: a) the use of politeness strategies may collaborate for the speech fluidity, and may inhibit offense and disrespect; b) the exclusive use of politeness strategies do not guarantee the practice of argumentation, for they might inhibit the conflicts that are natural and necessary for the production of knowledge ; and c) the courteous style practice, along with politeness, might be more efficient to promoting an argumentation practice environment

Relações de poder no processo de ensino e aprendizagem de matemática / Power relations in the process of teaching and learning of mathematics

João Paulo Attie 23 April 2013 (has links)
The mathematics classroom is a context in which are woven the power relations between teacher and student, although this may not be a conscious phenomenon for subjects directly involved. We consider that the occurrence of these relationships is not, in itself, an event that deserves a moral judgment. The objective of this study is to investigate the relations of power established between teacher and student in math class and discuss their implications for the teaching and learning of the discipline. For this goal to be achieved, we delve into certain concepts, such as power and power relations and some characteristics of power relations, that we base in the writings of Foucault and Bourdieu and we studied also the historical process of institutionalization of mathematics in society. We conducted a field study, we developed the application with interviews, semi-structured, in the case of teachers and parents separately, and using the techniques of focus group with students in two schools with some distinct characteristics. During the fieldwork, each group got elements that bolstered our analysis. Students, elements that have allowed us to reach realize how they are described by the terms instrumental in the exercise of power relations between them and their teachers; parents, got their impressions of the importance they attach to mathematics performance for the life of the children, configuring a form of institutionalization of power assigned to the discipline; finally, the teachers, we see the degrees of rationalization that are produced in their teaching.

The impact of teacher-student classroom interactions in primary school environment on children's engagement in classroom : A systematic literature review

Wang, Minzhi January 2017 (has links)
In primary school classrooms, teacher-student relations, student’s school engagement, achievement, and the frequency of teachers’ academic interactions are related to higher levels of student engagement. Since different strategies teachers use to initiate classroom interactions have different impacts on students’ engagement, the aim of this thesis is to explore how teacher-student classroom interactions in primary school influence their classroom engagement. A systematic literature review was conducted by using three databases. Eight studies that fit inclusion criteria were exerted and identified. The results show that teachers’ positive strategies (eg. emotional support, help, give instruction) in classroom interaction can significantly increase students’ behavior engagement, improve students’ social engagement and some of the strategies can also hinder students’ emotional engagement in classroom This thesis identifies actions teachers use to conduct classroom interaction and shows how these actions influence students’ behavioral, social, and emotional engagement in primary schools, which gives teachers an overview of the positive consequences of these interaction strategies in primary school classrooms. The suggestions for future research are, further studies can also include studies that perceived classroom interaction from teachers’ perspective and measured the influence of teachers’ negative interaction strategies (eg. criticism, punishment).

Advice giving : An investigation of teacher-student interactionwhen giving advice

Sande, Marcus January 2019 (has links)
Giving advice is an essential part of working as a teacher. However, advice-giving can be a sensitive topic depending on how the advice is delivered by the teacher. It remains to be seen what kind of approach teachers need to use to reach out and give advice to their students as successfully as possible. The present study aims to examine some different linguistic approaches teachers use to give advice to students. This was done by carrying out a Conversation Analysis on text extracts involving teacher and student interaction in an advising setting. The texts extracts were taken from The Michigan Corpus of Academic Spoken English. The results show that there were two main types of advice-giving strategies found in the data: direct and indirect advice giving. Both strategies seemed to be successful in that the students accepted the advice provided and did not argue with the teacher about its validity.

Gender Issues In Islamic Schools: A Case Study Of Two Schools In The United States

Sabbah, Hilda Yacoub 21 November 2005 (has links) (PDF)
This study sought to explore and explain how boys, girls, teachers, and principals "do gender" in Islamic schools in the United States. The goal is to seek plausible explanations of how boys and girls interact formally and informally during the day, how they create differences, and how they interact with teachers and principals. This descriptive study utilized a case study design. The education of girls is very important for their individual growth and development, as well as for the welfare of both the Islamic and American societies and nations. Therefore, scholars and educators should work together to solve problems interfering with the education of girls. Research studies indicate that issues that impact girls' education include discrimination against girls in classrooms, interaction between boys and girls, effects of gender on education, and hidden curriculum. This study is very important for the Islamic communities to improve education of girls in the United States. The value of this study is to explore and explain how boys and girls "do gender" in Islamic schools in the United States and how this "doing" affects girls' academic achievement.

We're Definitely on Our Own: Interaction and Disconnection in a Virtual High School

Hawkins, Abigail 18 March 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Using mixed methods, this study examined the nature of teacher-student interaction in an asynchronous, statewide, self-paced virtual high school. Eight teachers were interviewed to understand their perceptions on the nature of interactions and their role as a virtual school teacher. Interactions were primarily instructional in nature, taking the form of feedback on student assignments. There were few procedural and social interactions. In general, teachers felt disconnected from their students due to the large class sizes and limited interactions. They also felt disconnected from their peers and the role of a teacher as they traditionally defined it. To understand the relationship between perceived interaction and academic performance, 46,089 students were surveyed using an 18-item instrument designed to assess the types and frequency of interaction. Hierarchical linear modeling and hierarchical logistic regression on the 2,269 responses indicated significant differences between completers' and non-completers' perceptions of teacher-student interaction. However, there were minimal differences between students based on grade awarded and teacher-student interaction. The results of this study were discussed as well as implications for practitioners and researchers. The full text of this dissertation may be downloaded for free from http://etd.byu.edu/

Eles cuidam de crianças. Quem cuida deles? O sofrimento psíquico do professor na relação com a criança considerada agressiva / They take of children. Who take care of them? Teacher´s psychic suffering related to the child perceived as aggressive

Castro, Rebeca Eugênia Fernandes de 24 March 2008 (has links)
The expression of the antisocial tendency seems to point out a protest against an early deprivation. It emerges when the child hopes that the world will provide him with a positive response, re-establishing the emotional development. When this protest is not answered by the family, its effects may appear at school. In spite of growth of violence on schools, the comprehension of this phenomena is needed, specially at the point of view of teachers, who receive the childrens pulsional investment. This investment is characterized not only by love, but also by hate. The present study was conducted in a public school in the suburb of São Paulo City, and it is part of a larger project that investigates preventive intervention for aggressive children, their families and educators. The research aims to listen to teachers´ reports, whose work involves everyday problems dealing with aggressive children and to investigate child aggressiveness´ role as a factor that engenders psychic pain in them. The forms adopted by the school in order to handle the child aggressiveness are surveyed, examining the office referrals written by teachers. It is also analysed the data collected by interviews with 12 teachers, who were in different career stages. The interviews were recorded, transcripted and categorized considering the simple frequency. The teachers´ answers, regarding the different periods of their careers, were compared as well. The results showed different perceptions of children´s agressiveness, as well as different management strategies used by the teachers, dependending on their career moment. It was verified that feelings of unthankfulness and grudge may be brought up and worsened by the time, indicating the importance of an intervention that helps to digest those aspects.

Shaping Fuzzy Goals through Teacher-Student Interaction: A Detailed Look at Communication between Community College Faculty and Transfer Students

Leonard, Diana Kay January 2010 (has links)
SHAPING FUZZY GOALS THROUGH TEACHER-STUDENT INTERACTION: A DETAILED LOOK AT THE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN COMMUNITY COLLEGE FACULTY AND TRANSFER STUDENTS by Diana K. Leonard Faculty-student interactions have been largely neglected in the research regarding community colleges and community college transfer students. Yet faculty serve as points of institutional contact, and might also serve a central role in student experiences and decision-making. The purpose of this study was to increase our understanding of the dynamics and interactions that impact student experiences and decisions regarding transfer at the community college and to understand how those interactions contributed to goal formation. Symbolic interactionism (Blumer, 1969) provided a framework to guide the mixed-methods approach, which was primarily qualitative, utilizing online surveys and personal interviews to investigate students' interpretations of the student-teacher interactions. Quantitative data analysis measured teacher influence. 429 students who successfully transferred to a Research I university in the southwest, from in-state community colleges completed the survey. Ten students from this pool, subsequently interviewed, reflected various levels of uncertainty in their goals to transfer. These uncertain goals were termed "fuzzy" goals. In addition to symbolic interactionism as a framework, Stanton-Salazar's (1997) concept of institutional agents, supported with Bourdieu's (1977) cultural and social capital and Tinto's (1975) theory of social and academic integration were used to guide this study. Findings illustrated that students did utilize their teachers as institutional agents, who provided them with cultural knowledge and facilitated their understanding of procedures and processes through active as well as passive teacher-agency. Five themes emerged in students' interpretation of the student-teacher interactions: support, motivation, guidance, inspiration, and modeling. All had varying effects on students' uncertainty and contributed to shaping their fuzzy goals and to their social and academic integration into academe. This study can inform our understanding of the well-known gap in BA attainment between students who begin at a community college intending to transfer and students who begin at a four-year institution. Further, this study can inform strategic planning geared toward supporting teachers more fully in their role as institutional agents conveying social and cultural capital to students to increase their leverage for success once they transfer to the university.
