The Effects of Reframing and Self-Control Statements on Loneliness, Depression and Controllability

Garber, Ronald Alan 08 1900 (has links)
Reframing, a therapy technique which allows the therapist to restate a situation or problem so that it is perceived in a new way, has received considerable attention recently because of its purported positive effects on the therapeutic process. The increase in the use of reframing has taken place despite an absence of empirical confirmation of its effectiveness. Proponents of reframing comment on its usefulness early in the therapeutic process as a means for helping clients to more positively view their symptomatic behavior, to experience some affective relief, to shift toward an increased sense of control regarding their symptoms, and to view their counselor and their expectations for counseling more positively. The purpose of this study was to examine the differential effects of reframing and selfcontrol responses on the subjects' expressed degree of loneliness, depression, and perceived control of loneliness. In addition, effects of these interventions on the subjects' ratings of the interviewers and the subjects' expectations regarding counseling were explored.

FIGS—Faint Infrared Grism Survey: Description and Data Reduction

Pirzkal, Norbert, Malhotra, Sangeeta, Ryan, Russell E., Rothberg, Barry, Grogin, Norman, Finkelstein, Steven L., Koekemoer, Anton M., Rhoads, James, Larson, Rebecca L., Christensen, Lise, Cimatti, Andrea, Ferreras, Ignacio, Gardner, Jonathan P., Gronwall, Caryl, Hathi, Nimish P., Hibon, Pascale, Joshi, Bhavin, Kuntschner, Harald, Meurer, Gerhardt R., O’Connell, Robert W., Oestlin, Goeran, Pasquali, Anna, Pharo, John, Straughn, Amber N., Walsh, Jeremy R., Watson, Darach, Windhorst, Rogier A., Zakamska, Nadia L, Zirm, Andrew 01 September 2017 (has links)
The Faint Infrared Grism Survey (FIGS) is a deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFC3/IR (Wide Field Camera 3 Infrared) slitless spectroscopic survey of four deep fields. Two fields are located in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey-North (GOODS-N) area and two fields are located in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey-South (GOODS-S) area. One of the southern fields selected is the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. Each of these four fields were observed using the WFC3/G102 grism (0.8 mu m-1.15 mu m continuous coverage) with a total exposure time of 40 orbits (approximate to 100 kilo-seconds) per field. This reaches a 3 sigma continuum depth of approximate to 26 AB magnitudes and probes emission lines to similar to 10(-17) erg s(-1) cm(-2). This paper details the four FIGS fields and the overall observational strategy of the project. A detailed description of the Simulation Based Extraction (SBE) method used to extract and combine over 10,000 spectra of over 2000 distinct sources brighter than m(F105W) = 26.5 mag is provided. High fidelity simulations of the observations is shown to significantly improve the background subtraction process, the spectral contamination estimates, and the final flux calibration. This allows for the combination of multiple spectra to produce a final high quality, deep, 1D spectra for each object in the survey.

Detection of Water Vapor in the Thermal Spectrum of the Non-transiting Hot Jupiter Upsilon Andromedae b

Piskorz, Danielle, Benneke, Björn, Crockett, Nathan R., Lockwood, Alexandra C., Blake, Geoffrey A., Barman, Travis S., Bender, Chad F., Carr, John S., Johnson, John A. 01 August 2017 (has links)
The Upsilon Andromedae system was the first multi-planet system discovered orbiting a main-sequence star. We describe the detection of water vapor in the atmosphere of the innermost non-transiting gas giant ups. And. b by treating the star-planet system as a spectroscopic binary with high-resolution, ground-based spectroscopy. We resolve the signal of the planet's motion and break the mass-inclination degeneracy for this non-transiting planet via deep combined flux observations of the star and the planet. In total, seven epochs of Keck NIRSPEC L band observations, three epochs of Keck NIRSPEC short-wavelength K band observations, and three epochs of Keck NIRSPEC long wavelength K band observations of the ups. And. system were obtained. We perform a multi-epoch cross-correlation of the full data set with an atmospheric model. We measure the radial projection of the Keplerian velocity (K-P = 55 +/- 9 km s(-1)), true mass (M-b = 1.7(-0.24)(+0.33)M(J)), and orbital inclination (i(b) 24 degrees +/- 4 degrees), and determine that the planet's opacity structure is dominated by water vapor at the probed wavelengths. Dynamical simulations of the planets in the ups. And. system with these orbital elements for ups. And. b show that stable, long-term (100 Myr) orbital configurations exist. These measurements will inform future studies of the stability and evolution of the ups. And. system, as well as the atmospheric structure and composition of the hot Jupiter.

Stones, Beer Cans, and Other Pieces of These Poems

Taylor, James D. (James David), 1962- 12 1900 (has links)
This collection of poetry contains a brief introduction, one half discussing Gary Snyder's ideas on poetry in his essay, "Poetry and the Primitive," the other half of the introduction examining the successive revisions of a poem of mine. The examination is not an explication, but rather a look at the technique used in composing this poem. The body of the thesis is a collection of my poetry which I have written within the last four years. The poems speak both of experience and postulation of ideas. Though they do not follow any select pattern of thought or form, there is some connection between them in their subject matter.

Pulsar reception at 22 MHZ

Dewdney, P. January 1970 (has links)
An attempt is made to receive pulsar signals at a frequency (22 MHz) lower than they have been received before. The problem of high galactic background radiation is the dominant one. The receiver used optimizes the ratio of signal to sky background noise. The technique uses the property that pulsar signals are dispersed by intervening electrons. Using the known dispersion relation it is possible to predict the phase of the pulsar signal at one frequency (22 MHz) if it is known at another frequency (150 MHz). The receiver then tracks the pulse in frequency vs. time with a bandwidth which is small enough to match the instaneous bandwidth of the signal. Although it was found that pulsar signals from CP 1919 are still too weak to be received on such a system, an upper limit to their strength was obtained by measuring its sensitivity. At the time of observation (August, 1969) the signal strength at 22 MHz, averaged over 2600 pulses, was less than 1.0 x 10⁻²⁶ joules per m² of capture cross-section per unit bandwidth. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Electrical and Computer Engineering, Department of / Graduate

Improved Methodology of Static HDMLC Virtual Cone based Rapid Arcs for Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy

Unknown Date (has links)
Physical cones equipped on GammaKnife, Cyberknife, and C-arm linacs have been the standard practice in Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SART) for small intracranial lesions, such as treating trigeminal or glossopharyngeal neuralgia targets. The advancement of high-definition multi-leaf collimators (HDMLC), treatment planning systems, and small field dosimetry now allows for treatment without the need for an auxiliary mounted physical cone. This treatment type uses the “virtual cone”, a permanent high-definition MLC, arrangement to deliver “very small fields” with comparable spherical dose distributions to physical cones. The virtual cone therapy, on a Varian Edge™ linac using multiple non-coplanar arcs with static HDMLCs, is a comparable technique that can be used to treat small intracranial neuralgia or other small lesions. In this investigation, two flattening filter free (FFF) photon beams, 6MV FFF and 10MV FFF, were tested for optimal delivery and safety conditions for treating intracranial lesions. The virtual cone method on a Varian Edge™ Linear accelerator using rapid arc stereotactic radiosurgery was used to treat cranial neuralgia for chronic pain for six patients. Absolute dose, relative dose measurements, and monitor units were the main characteristics that were examined to decide which energy was the best for treatment. Source-to-axis distances (SAD) of 100cm measurements were taken at depths of 10cm and 5cm, respectively. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2020. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection
