Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries 2040 energy scenario for electricity generation and water desalination.Almulla, Youssef January 2015 (has links)
Judicious modeling of an energy system can help provide insights as to how elements of the energy system might be configured in the longer term. The current and future electricity and water desalination systems of each GCC country were represented using a full-cost based optimization tool called MESSAGE and the following scenarios were examined: 1. The business as usual scenario (BAU): current energy system is extended into the future without any changes. The energy system structure and characteristics are kept the same. The fuel prices are also kept at the current subsidized levels. 2 - The netback-pricing scenario: all fuel costs are increased to the international market price. The freed amount of fuel is assumed to be available for export to the international market. Moreover, this scenario examines different carbon tax options of 0, 20,30 ,40 and 50 dollars per kilo tons of CO2 emissions. 3 - The Nuclear hub scenario: examines the idea of a “nuclear hub” state for the GCC region that can have all the “know-how” and logistics to provide sufficient nuclear energy for the GCC through the Interconnection Grid “GCCIG”. Results shows that fossil fuels will continue to play an important role in a least cost future for the region. This is due, in no small part, to the cheap natural gas resources in the GCC. Despite the high renewable energy technologies potential, their penetration – given the study assumptions - proved to be important, but limited in the GCC. On the other hand, nuclear energy shows clear economic potential.

E-Commerce Practices in the Arabian Gulf GCC Business Culture: Utilisation and Outcomes PatternsAshrafi, Rafi, Yasin, Mahmoud M., Czuchry, Andrew J., AlHinai, Yousuf 01 January 2007 (has links)
With the growth of e-commerce-related activities and practices in recent years, the role of culture in promoting such growth has been brought to question. Cultures that tend to foster e-commerce practices have been labelled as e-cultures. In contrast, cultures that binder e-commerce growth have been labelled as traditional cultures. Most of our knowledge related to ecommerce applications and frameworks for implementation is based on studies from e-cultures. The study, at hand, examines e-commerce activities and practices in the traditional Arab culture. The results obtained from this study tended to be similar to the results obtained from the US e-culture. Thus, the growth of, or lack of, e-commerce may not be explained solely based on cultural factors. Perhaps, other factors such as informational infrastructure may be more relevant in explaining the acceptability and growth of e-commerce than the cultural context. Research examining the impact of these factors on e-commerce growth is needed towards establishing frameworks for the implementation of e-commerce and guidelines for managers in a global context.

The Performance of Islamic Banks During the 2008 Global Financial Crisis Evidence From the Gulf Cooperation Council CountriesHussien, Mohammed Ebrahim, Alam, Md Mahmudul, Murad, Md Wahid, Wahid, Abu 07 May 2019 (has links)
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the profitability performance of Islamic banks (IBs) of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region during 2008 global financial crisis. Design/methodology/approach: Bank-specific data are taken from the Bank Scope database and macroeconomic data are collected from International Financial Statistics. Using a panel data series of 30 banks for the period of 2005 to 2011, the study shows the evidence of structural break for the crisis year as well as the factors that impact the profitability of IBs. Findings: The performance of GCC IBs was significantly influenced during the crisis period by capital adequacy, credit risk, financial risk, operational efficiency, liquidity, bank size, gross domestic product, growth rate of money supply, bank sector development and inflation rate. The study also finds that there is a structural change before and after the global financial crisis. Originality/value: This is an original study that shows that the Sharīʿah-compliant banks have performed better during the crisis and are not affected based on their internal performance records; rather, they have been affected indirectly from the macro shock owing to the overall economic crisis.

Methodology of Construction Compiler Front-End and Its Integration into the GNU Compiler Collection / Methodology of Construction Compiler Front-End and Its Integration into the GNU Compiler CollectionMachata, Petr Unknown Date (has links)

Does economic diversification affect female labour force participation? - A study of the surge in female employment in the GCC region / Påverkar ekonomisk diversifiering kvinnligt deltagande på arbetsmarknaden? - En studie kring ökningen av kvinnlig arbetskraft i GCC regionenHåkansson de Leeuw, Nikie January 2022 (has links)
The aim with this thesis is to explore why the female labour force participation (FLFP) currently is increasing in one of the most conservative regions of the world: the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), while decreasing globally. (World Bank, 2022). The ongoing process of economic diversification in the region is in this thesis suggested to be an overlooked factor behind the surge in FLFP. Drawing from political science, political economy, and sociology theory on the gendered division of labour (e.g., Peterson, 2015; Prügl, 2020), this thesis suggests that, as the economies in the GCC region becomes more diversified, more female-coded labour sectors emerge. As a result, FLFP increases. The study is conducted by time series cross section statistical analysis with a timeframe between 1995 - 2015, using data from the Quality of Government Institute (Teorell, Sundström, Holmberg, Rothstein, Pachon & Mert Dalli, 2022). The result show that economic diversification affects FLFP in the GCC region, but not on a global level. The contribution of this thesis is not only to shed light on economic diversification as an unexplored factor that affects FLFP, but also on the importance of female-coded sectors for enabling women in conservative contexts to be part of the paid labour force.

The Effect of Organizational Characteristics on School Effectiveness: A Multilevel Analysis of the Gulf Cooperation Council StatesAlenezi, Abdulaziz Sh 10 January 2023 (has links)
According to the findings of the 2019 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), fourth-grade students from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries—consisting of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates—performed below average compared to other countries on mathematics and science assessments. Despite this, little organizational research has examined potential factors that might have contributed to these results or sought to quantify the variability in school effectiveness in GCC countries. Hence, the present study sought to address this gap by quantifying the variability in school effectiveness in these countries. Using TIMSS 2019 data and multilevel analysis within each GCC member state, the study found school effectiveness varied significantly, ranging between 17% and 60%, considerably more than the variation typically seen in Western countries. In addition, several school-level organizational factors showed a significant impact on school effectiveness. Schools with more adequate resources, higher-quality teachers, greater parental involvement at the school level, and a safer and more orderly environment tended to display higher effectiveness as measured by average mathematics achievement. This finding should encourage researchers and policymakers to have more informed discussions about school effectiveness in the region. / Doctor of Philosophy / Fourth-grade students in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries (i.e., Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates) performed below average on the 2019 mathematics assessments conducted by the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). Furthermore, it is unclear how much school effectiveness varies within or between these countries, and few studies have explored potential school-related reasons for such poor test results. The purpose of this study was thus to examine the variability in schools' effectiveness in GCC countries. Using TIMSS 2019 data and multilevel analysis within each country, the study found school effectiveness varied significantly, ranging from 17% to 60%, much more than in typical Western countries. In addition, several school characteristics significantly influenced a school's effectiveness. Schools with better resources, higher-quality teachers, more parental involvement in school, and a safer and more orderly environment tended to have higher average math scores. This finding should encourage researchers and policymakers to take a closer look at school effectiveness in the region.

Dividend policy in the banking sector in G-7 and GCC countries: A comparative studyHanifa, H., Hamdan, M., Haffar, Mohamed 2018 November 1923 (has links)
Yes / Dividend policy has been a puzzling question for many years. This
study attempts to identify the key factors affecting it in the
financial sector that have been neglected in the literature. Using
panel data on 621 Group of Seven (G-7) banks and 68 Gulf
Cooperation Council (GCC) banks, five main factors namely, banks’
size, profitability, growth, leverage, and last year’s dividend were
empirically tested regarding their impact on dividend payout
ratios. In addition to comparing the two economies descriptively,
the researchers employed panel data analysis using multiple
regression with random effects. The findings revealed that the
dividend payout ratio for the GCC countries is higher than G-7
countries in every year of the examined period (2010-2015).
Furthermore, for both G-7 and GCC banks, profitability and last
year dividend had a significant positive influence while banks’
leverage had a significant negative influence on the dividend
payout. It was found also that banks’ size is an important dividend
determinant in the G-7 countries only.

Time Delay Estimate Based Direction of Arrival Estimation for Speech in Reverberant EnvironmentsVarma, Krishnaraj M. 11 November 2002 (has links)
Time delay estimation (TDE)-based algorithms for estimation of direction of arrival (DOA) have been most popular for use with speech signals. This is due to their simplicity and low computational requirements. Though other algorithms, like the steered response power with phase transform (SRP-PHAT), are available that perform better than TDE based algorithms, the huge computational load required for this algorithm makes it unsuitable for applications that require fast refresh rates using short frames. In addition, the estimation errors that do occur with SRP-PHAT tend to be large. This kind of performance is unsuitable for an application such as video camera steering, which is much less tolerant to large errors than it is to small errors.
We propose an improved TDE-based DOA estimation algorithm called time delay selection (TIDES) based on either minimizing the weighted least squares error (MWLSE) or minimizing the time delay separation (MWTDS). In the TIDES algorithm, we consider not only the maximum likelihood (ML) TDEs for each pair of microphones, but also other secondary delays corresponding to smaller peaks in the generalized cross-correlation (GCC). From these multiple candidate delays for each microphone pair, we form all possible combinations of time delay sets. From among these we pick one set based on one of the two criteria mentioned above and perform least squares DOA estimation using the selected set of time delays. The MWLSE criterion selects that set of time delays that minimizes the least squares error. The MWTDS criterion selects that set of time delays that has minimum distance from a statistically averaged set of time delays from previously selected time delays.
Both TIDES algorithms are shown to out-perform the ML-TDE algorithm in moderate signal to reverberation ratios. In fact, TIDES-MWTDS gives fewer large errors than even the SRP-PHAT algorithm, which makes it very suitable for video camera steering applications. Under small signal to reverberation ratio environments, TIDES-MWTDS breaks down, but TIDES-MWLSE is still shown to out-perform the algorithm based on ML-TDE. / Master of Science

Finding solutions to the waste problem and reducing dependence on fossil fuels due to the growing demand for energy have become big challenges for researchers to deal with. Hospitals are large producers of Medical waste (MW) and also big energy consumers due to their long running hours and the running of equipment that demands adequate infrastructure. Despite accounting for a small share of all the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) not all producers, in Brazil, are concerned about waste treatment and its final destination. The use of technologies developed with the aim of treating such waste in order to generate energy has to be assessed. The Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto (HCFMRP-USP) generates around 1.9 tons of waste per day. In this context, the general aim of this research program was to assess the legal, environmental and economic-financial feasibility of the implementation of a private system of biomedical waste treatment at HCFMRP-USP in order to generate energy. The method was structured in exploratory research, data gathering by means of semi-structured interviews with MW department staff at the hospital, with Health researchers, with Engineering College researchers, technical organizations and equipment manufacturers, besides bibliographic referencing and content analysis. Cost-effectiveness analysis was used for the economic-financial analysis. Comparative studies of the types of treatment available and used nationwide were taken into consideration. Thus, the process which best suited the proposed system was that of incineration by means of Gasification Combined Cycle (GCC). Results showed that the proposed system is under the support of Law and it also takes into consideration the National Policy for Solid Waste (NPSW), provided that it has the approval of the Director Council of the Administration of the campus of USP and of its Environment Committee as well as appropriate environmental licenses granted by CETESB and pre-analysis of MW. However, under the environmental aspect, there are public and political issues regarding the acceptance of this implementation in the hospital premises. Although there is the use of advanced technology, the equipment which was assessed needs to be installed, maintained and monitored adequately by professionals trained to operate it so as to avoid possible damage to humans and the environment. Staff involved must be responsible. Finally, under the economic-financial aspect there was a draw between the costs of the treatment conducted at present and those of the proposed investment. Therefore, this last aspect assessed prevailed over the implicit benefit of the decision on whether to implement the process or not. However, the feasibility of the implementation of a private MW treatment system at HC-FMRP-USP in order to generate energy is to be considered under the legal, environmental and economicfinancial aspects.
