Afrikaner Nationalism and the Production of a White Cultural Heritage: An analysis of selected works undertaken by Dirk Visser and Gabriel Fagan from 1967-1993

Darke, Nicola Susan January 2012 (has links)
This dissertation entitled The Afrikaner Nationalism and the Production of a White Cultural Heritage: An analysis of selected works undertaken by Dirk Visser and Gabriel Fagan from 1967-1993 examines the construct of a white settler heritage as promoted and implemented through various restorations and reconstructions of DutchNOC buildings. The primary rationale of this study is to critically assess the actions of the main protagonists in the creation of this heritage, that is, the Department of Public Works, the National Monuments Council, Anton Rupert (and his Historic Homes of South Africa), the Simon van der Stel Foundation, the Institute of South African Architects and the provincial institutes. Directly related to this issue is the assessment as to whether the isolationist nature of the South Africa contributed to the plethora of stylistic restoration and reconstructions undertaken during the apartheid era. This study comprises two sections: first, the examination of the intellectual theoretical texts of Foucault, Nora and others pertaining to power, ideology, history and memory, as well as the seminal texts of Jokilehto and Choay which discuss the stylistic and historicist conservation theories of Viollet-le-Duc; and second, the analysis of selected case studies undertaken by Fagan on behalf of the state (The Castle of Good Hope and De Tuynhuys) and Visser on behalf of Rupert and Historic Homes of South Africa (Drostdy of Graaff-Reinet).

Bodies, body politics, bodies politic : the making and movement of American bodies since 9/11

Purnell, Kandida Iris January 2016 (has links)
Bodies - be they fleshy or other - are simultaneously made by, made of, moved by, and the makers and movers of other bodies. Driven by the questions how do bodies emerge? what makes bodies move? and what can bodies do? bodies are placed at the very centre of this book in order to explain and show, not only how such bodily making and re-making - (re)making - and movement is done, but also why awareness and understanding of the processes and practices involved in the continual and ongoing (re)making and moving of bodies - of three particular kinds in particular (bodies of power/knowledge, humanised bodies, and bodies politic) - is vital to the study of international relations, conflict, and security and thus to the discipline of International Relations (IR). In short, bodies - of these three kinds in particular - require foregrounding because international relations, conflicts, and security practices are conducted by, on, and for bodies (humanised bodies and bodies politic in particular), according to bodies (namely referred to as dominant bodies of power/ knowledge, which become fleshed out as material bodies including humanised bodies and bodies politic and enact statecraft, further down the line). Moreover, as demonstrated in this book, which takes up the broad empirical case of post-9/11 American body politics and two case studies into the visual body politics of suffering and dead American soldiers since 9/11 and the 2013 Camp Delta hunger strike, there is much to be gained by taking the very particular embodiments of bodies into account, as every body is unique and it is according to distinctive bodily features, malaise/ailments, and feelings that bodies are moved to act (and in turn touch and move other bodies) and continually become other than they are.

Advanced State Estimation For Electric Vehicle Batteries

Rahimifard, Sara Sadat January 2022 (has links)
Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are amongst the most commonly used types in Electric (EVs) and Hybrid Electric (HEVs) Vehicles due to their high energy and power densities, as well as long lifetime. A battery is one of the most important components of an EV and hence it needs to be monitored and controlled accurately. The safety, and reliability of battery packs must then, be ensured by accurate management, control, and monitoring functions by using a Battery Management System (BMS). A BMS is also responsible for accurate real-time estimation of the State of Charge (SoC), State of Health (SoH) and State of Power (SoP) of the battery. The battery SoC provides information on the amount of energy left in the battery. The SoH determines the remaining capacity and health of a pack, and the SoP represents the maximum available power. These critical battery states cannot be directly measured. Therefore, they have to be inferred from measurable parameters such as the current delivered by the battery as well as its terminal voltage. Consequently, in order to offer accurate monitoring of SoC, SoH and SoP, advanced numerical estimation methods need to be deployed. In the estimation process, the states and parameters of a system are extracted from measurements. The objective is to reduce the estimation errors in the presence of uncertainties and noise under different operating conditions. This thesis uses and provides different enhancements to a robust estimation strategy referred to as the Smooth Variable Structure Filter (SVSF) for condition monitoring of batteries. The SVSF is a predictor-corrector method based on sliding mode control that enhances the robustness in the presence of noise and uncertainties. The methods are proposed to provide accurate estimates of the battery states of operation and can be implemented in real-time in BMS. To improve the performance of battery condition monitoring, a measurement-based SoC estimation method called coulomb counting is paired with model-based state estimation strategy. Important considerations in parameter and state estimation are model formulation and observability. In this research, a new model formulation that treats coulomb counting as an added measurement is proposed. It is shown that this formulation enhanced information extraction, leading to a more accurate state estimation, as well as an increase in the number of parameters and variables that can be estimated while maintaining observability. This model formulation is used for characterizing the battery in a range of operating conditions. In turn, the models are integral to a proposed adaptive filter that is a combination of the Interacting Multiple Model (IMM) concept and the SVSF. It is shown that this combined strategy is an efficient estimation approach that can effectively deal with battery aging. The proposed method provides accurate estimation for various SoH of a battery. Further to battery aging adaptation, measurement errors such as sensor noise, drift, and bias that affect estimation performance, are considered. To improve the accuracy of battery state estimation, a noise covariance adaptation scheme is developed for the SVSF method. This strategy further improves the robustness of the SVSF in the presence of unknown physical disturbances, noise, and initial conditions. The proposed estimation strategies are also considered for their implementation on battery packs. An important consideration in pack level battery management is cell-to-cell variations that impact battery safety. This study considers online battery parametrization to update the pack’s model over time and to detect cell-to-cell variability in parallel-connected battery cells configurations. Experimental data are used to validate and test the efficacy of the proposed methods in this thesis. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / To address the critical issue of climate change, it is necessary to replace fossil-fuel vehicles with battery-powered electric vehicles. Despite the benefits of electric vehicles, their popularity is still limited by the range anxiety and the cost determined by the battery pack. The range of an electric vehicle is determined by the amount of charge in its battery pack. This is comparable to the amount of gasoline in a gasoline vehicle’s tank. In consideration of the need for methods to address range anxiety, it is necessary to develop advanced algorithms for continuous monitoring and control of a battery pack to maximize its performance. However, the amount of charge and health of a battery pack cannot be measured directly and must be inferred from measurable variables including current, voltage and temperature. This research presents several algorithms for detecting the range and health of a battery pack under a variety of operating conditions. With a more accurate algorithm, a battery pack can be monitored closely, resulting in lower long-term costs. Adaptive methods for determining a battery’s state of charge and health in uncertain and noisy conditions have been developed to provide an accurate measure of available charge and capacity. Methods are then extended to improve the determination of state of charge and health for a battery module.

The categories been, to be able, democracy, citizenship and organic intellectual are analyzed in the relation enter the current period of training of the Brazilian education and the actions of the social movements of educators in the shock with the instituted power, in the fight for the quality socially referenced of the public education, in all the levels. It is argued transformation of the individual in citizen that, tied with the social movements, contests the model of the society and if it pledges in its contraregulation, Reflects on the history and the conceptualization of the social movements to come close itself to its transformations in result of economic, technological and ideological the dynamic occured in the world and Brazil. It is argued registration of the social movement of professors in the new social movements, in an analysis that holds the process of globalization and the adhesion of the Brazilian government to the neoliberals, in a movement that culminated with the capture of the education for the capital. It is analyzed change of the nature of the social movements in the shock with the instituted power, and its repercussions in the national education. In the years of lead of the Brazilian military dictatorship they had developed action of active resistance to the regimen, to the step that with its withdrawal and respective volte democracy of the Country, the movements had started to be propositive. In the current government of popular democratic mode, where a former-leader of the syndical movement, one of ours , assumed the presidency of the republic, it has been possible to detect positions conservatives of the social movements of educators. This understanding was possible with the adoption of the historical and dialectic materialism to analyze the contradictions produced for the capitalist society in the present time. The theoretical referential concerning the new social movements was basic to show the flows and refluxes of the social movements of its shock with intuited, concomitantly with the transformations of the civil society and politics commanded by the neoliberal politics. A plurality of the associations of studies and research in education, each one with its specification, that however breaks up the possibility of a common agenda, however organizes this agenda, many times makes impracticable the joint in a central office, weakening the shock with the government. This inquiry consists of more study that show the indifference with that the government deals the education, so important common good for the Brazilian people. It results of this work the considerations of that history is not condescending with the latecomers, the conformed ones, the no critics individuals, the social movements of passive proposals and with the social movements conservatives. The desfiliados social ones need to become citizens, need to emancipate themselves of mooring cables imposed for the ruling classes. Perplexities excited will be able, perhaps, to awake the conscience of classroom of the professors, for had developed class actions in the conflict established with the instituted power, based in solidarity, with sights to the advance in the public education, of quality socially referenced for all and in all the levels / Pesquisa qualitativa com análise de entrevista semi-estruturadas.

Sustentabilidade e inovação no setor brasileiro da contrução civil: um estudo exploratório sobre a implantação da política pública baseada em desempenho / Sustainability and Innovation on the Brazilian Building Sector: An exploratory study about the performance-based implementation of the public housing policy

Bismarchi, Luis Felipe 09 June 2011 (has links)
The main purpose of this research is to identify the possible impacts the adoption of a new purchasing model of popular buildings by Caixa Econômica Federal (CAIXA) has on the promotion of innovation and sustainability in the Brazilian building chain. Despite several definitions, the most accepted concept of sustainable development is the development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The sustainability movement is quickly getting stronger in the beginning of the 21st century, urging civil society to rethink its consumption pattern. This has a direct impact over companies production pattern. On this change process, the ability to innovate, that is, to develop new knowledge or apply in different matters the existing knowledge, is strategic to companies adapt to this new context where sustainability is a condition to keep in market. A performance-based procurement model of popular housing, once it modifies the methodology of selection, award and monitoring building companies, becomes a way to the State promote the Brazilian building sector towards sustainability. Through a theoretical exploratory research, we present a model of performance-based procurement developed in the USA in the 1990´s and we identify its potential to promote sustainability and innovation, mainly due to the way the request for proposal is done. The main finding of this research is that the presented model has a greater potential than the actual one to foster innovation and sustainability in the Brazilian building sector, once it presents new roles and a new relationship dynamics among all agents involved in the implementation of the public housing policy.
