The main goal of this creative project was to study the human figure and its relationship to its environment. In the process of exploring this idea, several key concepts became the focal point. First, the element of time was studied. The primary emphasis was the relationship between human figures and the passage of time. Second, working with figures on white backgrounds focused on each figure’s visual characteristics. Last, addressing elements of abstraction helped to control the mood of each piece. In terms of subject matter, everyday activities were the focus of the project.
Every day we subject ourselves to routine behaviors, to which we eventually become desensitized. In this creative work these mundane activities are addressed in order to uncover unique qualities in the visual environments that often are overlooked. A variety of techniques derived from traditional processes were developed to explore these concepts, including embedding, paint carving, and encasing. An exploration of common imagery utilizing photography, along with visual references from various artists, were used to inform the processes developed for this project. / Department of Art

Les parallèles entre À la recherche du temps perdu et le diptyque romanesque de Lezama Lima (Paradiso et Oppiano Licario) ont toujours été tracés d’un point du vue thématique, avec l’idée que Lezama était le « Proust cubain ». Après avoir analysé la manière dont l’oeuvre de Lezama a été reçue comme « proustienne » et conjointement comment l’oeuvre de Proust a été reçue en Amérique hispanophone, on propose dans cette étude de montrer que l’aspect le plus intéressant de la comparaison entre les deux auteurs n’est pas uniquement d’ordre thématique, mais qu’il est beaucoup plus global. En effet, les deux écrivains construisent leur oeuvre sur une omniprésence de l’analogie (qui est déclinée sous différentes formes : comparatisme, comparaisons, métaphores, symétries, etc.) au point que ce principe d’analogie (et sa forme la plus aboutie, les figures) sert même à construire un système de pensée d’ordre philosophique, alternatif dans sa méthode à la logique classique. / À la recherche du temps perdu and Lezama Lima’s novelistic diptych (Paradiso and Oppiano Licario) have always been compared on a thematic way, considering Lezama as the “Cuban Proust”. First, we will analyze how the lezamian work has been read as a proustian work and how Proust’s Recherche has been received in Hispanic America and received by Lezama. Then, we will try to prove that the most interesting side of the comparison is not thematic but something more global. Both writers build their novels on an omnipresence of the analogy (which is developed by several forms: comparatism, comparisons, metaphors, symmetry, and so on). A comparison of narrative in Genesis and Genesis Rabbah : the Cain and Abel storyLesk, Joshua. January 2005 (has links)
This paper is a comparison of narrative in Genesis and Midrash Genesis Rabbah, using as a sample each text's version of the story of Cain and Abel. The paper begins with a survey of the study of Bible as literature and Midrash as literature, examining the work of Robert Alter, Meir Sternberg, Wesley A. Kort, Isaak Heinemann, Ofra Meir, David Stern and Jacob Neusner. Following this is a close reading and poetic analysis of the two primary texts, then a summary and comparison of narrative conventions and techniques. Narrative is examined according to the considerations of plot, character, narration and meaning. Further conclusions are drawn regarding the different portrayal of God in biblical and midrashic discourse, attitudes toward paradox and ambiguity, and strategies for achieving ideological and rhetorical goals.
