Determinants of Fuel Choice in New Electric Power Plants

Bergman, Andrew 01 January 2013 (has links)
Despite increasing fuel cost volatility, regulatory uncertainty, and imminent shifts to industry dynamics, utility managers are forced to make tough decisions in regards to installing long-life generation assets. This study seeks to identify and quantify determinants of fuel choice in new electric power plants given vast uncertainties in the electricity generation sector. Using a probit functional form to estimate marginal effects on the likelihood of choosing wind versus natural gas powered generation, I find positive effects of natural gas prices in the period three years prior to initial operation of the new facility, positive effects of static-level standard score of mix, and positive effects of wind-power density. Additional feedstock choice sets and parameters are considered. All models suggest that (a) feedstock costs are significant predictors of fuel choice, (b) state-level regulatory learning enhances likelihood of choosing relatively young technologies, (c) Renewable Portfolio Standards result in artificial substitution between wind and solar technologies, and (d) population density, more so than political influence, predicts choices to install wind-powered capacity. Public policy and managerial implications are discussed.

Wang, Shun-en 21 June 2007 (has links)
The electric power is the modernized life cornerstone, is the economical development power. In recent years but as a result of the energy shortage, the fuel price anabatic wind rose, the peak load continued to grow, creates the electric power supply becoming serious. If the power supply cost is unable to respond in the electrovalence, how also creates the enterprise own to continue forever the management. This research main goal thoroughly is analyzing the Taiwan Telegraphic Transmission electrovalence structural model and the set price law, and the electrovalence difference¡£season electrovalence, the time electrovalence¡¤rationality, and on the external environment, faces the fuel price anabatic wind to rise and under the unreasonable low price electrovalence arduous situation, then discusses it in accordance to it road¡FFinally will attempt summarizes in accordance to the future transport business environment, the formulation electrovalence adjustment mechanism, will conform to present situation, will be full responded each kind of factor in the electrovalence, hoped for this research will be able to become the future to establish in the electrovalence model formulation process the reference. This study research for the document company, after the process material analysis, will establish "the most suitable electrovalence set price pattern" the factor induction to be as follows¡G (1) Brings into line with "the fuel cost". (2) To consider "the reserve capacity rate". (3) Enhancement breaks a contract the penal regulations. (4) To enhance the time electrovalence section several. (5) Change unreasonable electrovalence structure. (6) Reference various countries electrovalence model.

ALTERNATE MODELS FOR NATURAL GAS TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM PERFORMANCE OPTIMIZATION

Arumugam, Gnana Shekaran 01 January 2015 (has links)
The Natural Gas market in the U.S is growing rapidly with evidence that the nation has enough shale reserves to power the country for the next century. To ensure continued economic benefits through the use of this environmentally desired energy source, it becomes important to optimize the transportation network system design. Transportation through pipelines is one of the most common methods used to distribute Natural Gas from source to destination. This transportation system, consisting of pipelines, compressors and other supporting equipment, must be optimized, considering all relevant parameters to minimize cost and increase profit. The research presented here improves on the fuel cost minimization models in literature to incorporate pipeline elevation and safety requirements. A new model is proposed to consider the entire transportation network as a single system and optimize it considering all relevant parameters. The optimization model is setup as a mixed integer nonlinear program. The proposed model is used to optimize the pipeline network for a case study, evaluate the model as well as investigate design capacity and installed capacity of pipeline network.

Smart Grid Technologies for Efficiency Improvement of Integrated Industrial Electric System

Balani, Spandana 20 May 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to identify the need of Smart Grid Technologies in communication between industrial plants with co-generation capability and the electric utilities in providing the most optimum scheme for buying and selling of electricity in such a way that the fuel consumption is minimized, reliability is increased, and time to restore the system is reduced. A typical industrial plant load profile based on statistical mean and variance of industrial plants' load requirement is developed, and used in determining the minimum cost of producing the next megawatt-hours by a typical electric utility. The 24-hour load profile and optimal power flow program are used to simulate the IEEE 39 Bus Test System. The methodology for the use of smart grid technology in fuel saving is documented in the thesis. The results obtained from this research shall be extended to include several industrial plants served by electric utilities in future work by the UNO research team.

Método previsor-corretor primal-dual de pontos interiores em problemas multiobjetivo de despacho econômico e ambiental /

Stanzani, Amélia de Lorena. January 2012 (has links)
This paper presents the primal-dual predictor-corrector interior point method for quadratic programming with linear and quadratic constraints and bounded variables, and its application in multiobjective problems of economic and environmental dispatch, found in electrical engineering. It is intended to determine effective solutions to the fuel cost used in thermal power generation and emissions control, by investigating two strategy; the first strategy considers the objective function as weighted sum of economic and environmental objective functions; the second strategy considers the economic dispatch problem subject to environmental constraint, upper bounded for allowable emission levels. To solve them, a computational implementation of primal-dual methods was performed in C++ programming language, considering the predictor-corrector procedure with a strategy of modified barrier for the quadratic inequality constraints, when we considerer the second strategy. The results obtained demonstrate the efficiency of the method highlighted in comparison with the co-evolutive genetic algorithms, hybrid and atavistic cultural, as well the primal-dual interior point method with one-dimensional search procedure, which are found in the literature / Mestre
