Harmful scripts : raunch femininity as the disguised reiteration of emphasized feminine goals : an exploration of young women's accounts of sexually explicit forms of public expression

Thorpe, Jennifer 12 July 2013 (has links)
Women are subject to a number of societal recommendations about what it means to be an 'ideal' woman. These recommendations take the form of social scripts, constructing an idea of ideal femininity, which women must perform in order to be socially accepted and successful. 'Emphasized femininity', a white, Western, script of femininity is dominant and has been critiqued by feminists, social theorists, and individual women for the limits that it places on women's behaviour. As a result a number of alternative scripts of femininity have arisen. These scripts can provide alternatives to restrictive understandings of female sexuality and beauty - they can serve to challenge 'appropriate' feminine behaviour and hence allow women to live more freely. Raunch femininity is a contemporary alternative that uses sexually explicit public performance, and encourages specific body and dress norms, in an attempt to challenge the norms of emphasized femininity. This thesis looks at raunch femininity, specifically its norms of sexuality and beauty, in the hopes of understanding what the effects of such a script are on women's behaviour. Theoretical understandings and explanations of women's lives are often contradicted by reports that women provide of their lived experiences. For this reason, this thesis investigates the lived experiences of women who self-identify as subscribers to this script in order to assess to what extent superficial expressions of freedom have deeper effects on women's freedom. The tension between theory and empirical reports is evident. However, in many cases, the reports of research participants reveal that the script of raunch femininity, like other scripts of feminine behaviour, has its own limits that women must abide with in order to be accepted. This thesis argues that these limits outweigh the benefits of this script. / KMBT_363 / Adobe Acrobat 9.54 Paper Capture Plug-in

Corpo, contemporaneidade, juventudes e escola /

Lacerda, José Luiz. January 2013 (has links)
We have analyzed whether the youth indicates a shift of the characteristics of the modern world to a contemporary world, where the body wins senses and constitutes and ethics of aesthetics. The study is based on the foundations of Michel Maffesoli, which uses the comprehensive sociology and refers to the notion of sociality, and refers to the notion of sociality, in which, nowadays, it emerge a feeling of community market predominantly by the collective body on the individual one, coexisting emotion and reason and making closer the experiences which have been shared and lived in common, creating an environment of solidarity that allows people "being together". As a methodological tool, it has been used the focus groups technique involving 11 students, conducted in four blocks of questions, posted for discussion. All meetings were videotaped, transcribed and analyzed. We have concluded that in our cyclical destination, the contemporary youth has been transforming its way of seeing and understanding the world that differs from modern times. The body is in evidence, which causes the young people to move from a place where rationality prevailed in the way of acting in the way of acting in the world that is running out, going to a transition where emotion prevails with the Dionysian return, in substitution to a Promethean time. We have confirmed the return of a collective body, starting another paradigm that is based on aesthetic, in which beauty, the good pleasure of looking up, the game of forms, makes the recognition of aesthetics, in the sense of common...

Ribeiro, Rubia Guimarães January 2012 (has links)
The thesis analyzes the discourses about health and the investments in women’s bodies made by a women’s magazine, considering that we are rendered subjective by certain ideas about health which are part of the discourses that surround us. This process of subjectification is manifested in different ways, the media being one of the most important. The study is of qualitative nature, based on Cultural Studies, in their post-structuralist version. The analyses are supported by tools suggested by philosopher Michel Foucault, such as discourse and power, as well as their displacements, government and biopower. The research corpus is comprised of 23 copies of the Argentinean magazine Para Ti (For You), dated from January 2 to June 25, 1940. The analyses are organized by two markers, which indicate the distinctive traits that highlight certain meanings in the analyses. In the first one, entitled “woman: responsible for family health” the different artifices, which position women as the ones in charge of families’ health, are highlighted. In the second marker, “imperative for health: governing life and body” the ways in which female readers are subjectified to take care of their own health, and that their families’ as well, are presented. By steering their conduct in different areas of life, the Magazine governs women and their families, with the aim of governing the population in a way in which all will learn to be healthy.

Raggio Quintas, Juan Pablo January 2009 (has links)
This work presents the measurement and assessment a ships crew exposition to noise and vibration. The ship hauls hazardous cargo in the brazilian southern basin. Considering that the crew is exposed throughout the ship's journey reducing the levels of noise and vibration is critical for improved comfort and prevention of exposure aggravated diseases. Sound pressure levels and three dimensional acceleration measurements were performed on the studied vessel's cabins and engine room. The levels of noise and vibration were compared with standards suitable for marine vessels. Propagation paths of sound waves and vibration were defined by analyzing the frequency spectrum and cross spectrum of the measurements as well as their transmitted frequencies. Proposals for based on the data gathered of sound pressure level and vibration reduction are presented.

The body in the politics and society of early China

He, Jianjun, 1970- 12 1900 (has links)
ix, 212 p. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / This dissertation discusses the political conceptualization and social practice of the body in early China through a close examination of the texts and documents produced from the Spring and Autumn period to the end of the Eastern Han dynasty. It demonstrates that, in addition to medical concerns, the body in early China was transformed into a political concept and a ritual subject that served indispensably in state construction and social control. It is divided into the following three chapters. Chapter one, "Physiognomy and the Body," examines the relationship between physiognomy and the body. Following a roughly chronological order, this chapter shows how physiognomy, a divination technique, read the body for political purposes. In addition to this, the chapter also discusses philosophical reactions to this political interpretation of the body by looking at criticisms in the works of Mengzi, Xunzi, Dong Zhongshu, Wang Chong and Wang Fu. Chapter two, "Politics and the Body," discusses the political theory and practice of the body in early China. It begins with a description of the metaphorical meanings of the body in early political discourse, focusing on their role in defining the competitive relationship between the ruler and the minister, as well as their significance in defending the political and ethical legitimacy of the state. The use of the body as an actual political tool forms the second consideration of this chapter. I demonstrate how the political symbolism of the body weighted significantly in Han China's foreign policy making. Chapter three, "Ritual and the Body," deals with the issue of ritualization of the body in early China. The chapter is organized in accordance with two issues concerning the body in early ritual theories: ritualizing the body and embodying the ritual. I show how ritual trains the body to be acceptable to the society and how the ritualized body facilitates the maintenance of a hierarchical social order. / Adviser: Stephen Durrant

Assuming that we are subject bodies and understanding that teachers have great influences on how the students will develop, the goal of this research is to investigate the relation between teachers' conceptions of the body, children and childhood education and their own corporeality. Therefore, aspects regarding the concepts of body guided by different perspectives and authors, authors such as Michel Foucault, Rudolf Laban, Merleau-Ponty and Paulo Freire were approached. The story of the body as socio-historic construction was also briefly resumed, and some considerations related to childhood, child and early childhood education were elaborated, in order to publicize the recognition of this educational stage and, concerning the understanding of their specificities, relate it to the concept of embodiment. To give visibility and analysis to aspects related to the research themes, three educators that work in the stage of childhood education were interviewed through semi-structured interviews, under the foundations of qualitative methodology. The data analysis was constructed in the parallel established between the research questions, the collected data, the inferences made and the theoretical perspectives adopted. Thematic blocks were elaborated from the goals outlined centered on four points. They are: a look upon the conception of child and the purpose of the education destined to them; a look upon the conception of body, a look upon the practices of the childhood educator regarding the place that gives to the body from the understanding about it; a look upon what the concepts and corporeality reveal about the ways of being in the world and in the school. The analyzed data indicate the importance of the teaching reflection, awareness of the historical and social conditioning and the adoption of strategies of action in teaching so that the education professionals effectively take educational function, and based on this understanding, take ...
