Magnetic resonance spectroscopy as part of a comprehensive neuroimaging assessment toolSanaei Nezhad, Faezeh January 2018 (has links)
Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) allows the non-invasive measurement of selected biological compounds in vivo. Despite MRS proven potential it is not yet a routine clinical tool operated by clinicians. This is mainly due to the complex procedure of MRS acquisition, lack of standardisation in both acquisition and analysis protocols along with lack of a standard quality control. This thesis intended to address these issues with the focus on four metabolites glutathione, glutamate, glutamine and GABA using MEGA-PRESS pulse sequence. Recommendations on acquisition and spectra analysis is made for the MRS protocol MEGA-PRESS aiming to detect glutathione in vivo. This is based on an investigation of glutathione acquisition in vivo and in vitro and was aimed to answer the question: can glutathione be measured reliably using conventional pulse sequence PRESS or does it require editing? The results showed strong evidence of using editing in order to have a reliable glutathione concentration measurement. An analysis along with a quality control method is also presented to enable the extraction of glutamate and glutamine from a GABA-optimised MEGA-PRESS pulse sequence. This enables simultaneous measurements of GABA, glutamate and glutamine in a single acquisition. A criterion of NAA linewidth < 8 Hz and Glx CRLB < 16% were defined as optimum features in the GABA-edited spectrum for a reliable glutamate and glutamine quantification. Finally, due to the increasing interest in functional MRS of GABA using MEGAPRESS an investigation on the feasibility of measuring GABA in a functional-MRS setting was performed with recommendations on study designs and subject size. Power calculations suggest that detecting a 40% change in GABA using a 4'30" acquisition requires 9-93 subjects per group in a between-group study design and 13- 68 participants in a within-session design, depending on the region of interest. This thesis is set out in the Journal format thesis. Three introductory chapters, with each experimental study presented as a chapter and a final chapter that summarizes and discusses the work. Results in this thesis provide a basis for a standard and reliable MRS pipeline to reliably measure glutathione, glutamate, glutamine and GABA using MEGA-PRESS pulse sequence at 3 Tesla.

S.A. Volksraadslede en persgeloofwaardigheid : 'n politieke houdingstudieGouws, Amanda 04 February 2014 (has links)
M.A. (Politics) / This study represents an empirical inquiry into the attitudes of South African Members of Parliament towards the credibility of the South African press. The study was conducted in the field of Political Science, but literature from the field of Communication Science was also used to explain certain aspects of mass media behaviour and political communication. In any governmental system political leaders are the most important people in the decision-making process. In most societies with a high level of technological development the mass media is the primary and most frequently used instrument for disseminating information and influencing public opinion. It can be used very effectively by political leaders to make contact with the electorate. Chapter One deals with the research problem of the study. Political leaders in South Africa are confronted by a specific reality when reading different newspapers. This reality is one created by the criteria of newsworthiness and editorial policy, as well as by the political interests of newspapers. This study attempts to determine to what extent political leaders. experience this reality of newspaper reporting as credible. This question is answered by an analysis of the attitudes of South African MPs toward the credibility of the press. The interaction between the political leader and the press is the most important aspect of the theoretical framework for this study. Different dimensions of this relationship are analysed. Influence is regarded as one of the major concepts in this relationship. In the communication process the relationship of influence between sender and receiver is of major importance. This relationship consists of the following elements: (1) the situation or context in which the communication occurs; (2) communicator or message characteristics; (3) receiver characteristics; (4) effects. To isolate certain of these...

The African press in South AfricaSt Leger, Frederick York January 1975 (has links)
In a plural society, riven by deep conflict, as is South Africa, where however the Press retains a considerable measure of freedom to contribute to the political process it is the political role which is of the greatest significance rather than, for example, the reflection by the Press of social values or the internal organisation of the Press as a social system. Although it is, of course, hardly possible completely to ignore these other aspects in any institutional study.

Freedom of the press, or the infringement of the right to privacy?: media coverage of President Kgalema Motlanthe from October 2008 to April 2009 in three newspapersGamlashe, Thembinkosi January 2012 (has links)
The researcher attempts to assess in which respect the privacy of former President Kgalema Motlanthe may have been invaded during his presidency, in view of journalistic ethics and press codes currently in effect. The study will explore media practices based on media freedom at the time of publication, and assess whether this freedom is understood to suggest the infringement of the right to privacy in the coverage of the private lives of politicians in the media. This study will therefore examine a sample of articles from the Sunday Times, City Press and Mail and Guardian, covering former President Kgalema Motlanthe’s public behaviour that related to his private life, assess which aspects of his demeanour became the subject of media coverage, and correlate such reporting trends with fluctuations in his political career. The researcher will focus on the period when Kgalema Motlanthe was at the helm as the Head of State – from October 2008 to April 2009, and consider particularly the trends in the sampled press reports regarding his private life. The study furthermore examines some of the legislative and normative changes that affected the media in South Africa after democratisation, to correlate the trends observed in the press coverage with legislation. This further serves to identify possible gray areas that arise from reporting on the freedom of the press and may lead to the invasion of privacy.

Strangers in the House: the Legislative Press Gallery of British ColumbiaReeder, Sarah Katherine 05 1900 (has links)
This thesis explores the dynamics and complexities of the press-politician relationship
in the context of the British Columbia Legislature and Press Gallery. The relationship is
examined from theoretical, historical/institutional, practical, and political perspectives. The
evidence presented suggests that although the press-politician relationship is necessarily
symbiotic, it is also characterized by conflict and attempts by both press and politicians to
achieve independence of each other. As such, the relationship is most accurately described as
one of "adversarial symbiosis." The sources of strain and the constructive elements of the
relationship work in tandem to move the province closer to the ideals of legislative
democracy as the relationship evolves over time.
Provincial press galleries are notoriously under-documented, both through
independent research and through their own administration. To date, there has not been a
comprehensive study of the British Columbia Press Gallery as an institution of the
Legislature. As a result, this thesis relies heavily on oral history, provided through semi-structured
interviews with current and former members of the Press Gallery, and published
biographies of B.C. journalists and politicians. This thesis was also informed by a review of
the existing literature on the Canadian, Australian and British Parliamentary Press Galleries,
archival research at the B.C. Legislative Library and Press Gallery offices and personal
observation and analysis afforded by the author's six-month Legislative Internship in the B.C.

Indian journalism and the ruling elite : a case of contingent heteronomyMaheshwari, Swati 03 September 2019 (has links)
The central question in this thesis is what are the interrelationships between the news media and those at the center of power and how do these shape the role the media play in democratic processes, particularly since neoliberal reforms in 1991. More specifically, this research attempts to illuminate journalistic practice and the factors that influence it, at the intersection of political and economic interests in what is often described as a crony capitalist polity (Kohli, 2007; Varshney, 2000). This has been done by examining three case studies that represented the interests of those at the center of power and the growing collusion between the state and private capital that has been a mark of the polity's neoliberal turn (Chandrashekhar, 2014). Each of these - the Nira Radia conversations that exposed the nexus between private capital and the state, the news media's coverage of the political elite, mainly the Gandhi family and the leader of the Hindu majoritarian political party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Narendra Modi, and lastly, the media's coverage of India's richest business house Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and its owner Mukesh Ambani - was marked by extensive self-censorship by the national mainstream news media. The theoretical architecture underpinning this project draws on three major approaches - political economy, field theory and new institutional theory provides a framework sufficiently sensitive to the range of pressures and influences journalism is subject to. This research draws on forty semi-structured, in-depth interviews with forty journalists and editors who were directly involved in the editorial processes of each of these news stories. The salient finding of this project is that the field of journalism has been subject to regular incursions from the field of power, particularly when political and economic interests are aligned, such that the field of journalism collapses in the field of power resulting in the need to reassess Bourdieu's claim that fields, however heteronomous, possess a degree of autonomy. This research finds that journalism is not merely embedded in the field of power, it plays a more pernicious role after economic liberalization. It becomes an active participant in negotiating and consolidating the dominant coalition of economic and political interests on which the polity rests. In other words, it is recruited by the field of power in institutionalizing crony capitalism. However, the self-censorship could not be sustained and unraveled, albeit briefly, in each of these cases. Contradictions between the macro forces induced by the consolidation of democracy, dissensus within the elite and constitutional limits circumscribing power are some of the variables that allow for interstices of journalistic autonomy. Thus, new institutionalism's insistence on retaining the political elided by both political economy and field theory, is valuable. Lastly, this research foregrounds the role played by journalistic agency in upholding the democratic mission of journalism.

Det glömda vanvettet i lokalpressen, NWT 1914-1918 : En undersökning av Nya Wermlands-Tidningens hållning till de tre huvudaktörerna i det första världskrigetLarsson, Marcus January 2007 (has links)
I have in this essay looked at what stand NWT took to the three leading countries in The First World War, Germany, France and England, and if it changed during the course of the war. I worked based on the theory that NWT, as a politically conservative newspaper was pro-Germany, which also showed to be true. I have look at the official stand, what is shown in the published material, what stand that the newspaper showed outwards. The result shows that NWT held a neutral stand during the war being loyal to the conservative government. At the end of the war the papers sympathies for Germany are shown more openly in its political material.

High Manganese Press Hardenable Steel for Automotive Safety ApplicationsKheiri, Sara January 2023 (has links)
In recent years, there has been an increase in the use of press hardened steel (PHS) in the body-in-white of automobiles, namely in parts such as side impact beams, roof rails, engine firewalls, and the floor area. As these parts are expected to possess corrosion resistance, Al-Si coatings are utilized on them. The implementation of Zn coatings is limited, despite possessing improved corrosion resistance attributed to cathodic corrosion protection, due to the detrimental effects of liquid metal embrittlement (LME) and microcracking. LME can be mitigated if stamping occurs at a temperature lower than the Fe-Zn peritectic temperature of 782 °C, as this ensures that the conditions of LME are not met and the cathodically-protective Γ-Fe3Zn10 phase is formed. The objective of this work was to determine a process window for stamping at lower temperatures for a GA80-coated prototype steel (steel K) with the composition of 0.19C-1.92Mn-0.20Si-0.003B-0.03Ti (wt.%). The target mechanical properties in this process window were UTS ≥ 1400 MPa, and YS ≥ 1000 MPa. To achieve robust cathodic corrosion protection, more than 15 vol% of Γ-Fe3Zn10 in the coating was desired. Furthermore, it was aimed to determine the robustness of this process and the industrial feasibility of it through pilot-scale trials for the GA80-coated prototype steel. To this end, a bare prototype steel (steel I) with the composition of 0.20C-1.96Mn-0.25Si-0.003B-0.01Ti was compared to GA-coated steel K. It was found that stamping a direct hot press forming (DHPF) temperature of 650 °C produced similar mechanical properties such as tensile strengths and ductilities. Microstructural analysis of laboratory-scale DHPF for steel K showed that both the coating and the substrate microstructures were not a strong function of the DHPF temperatures of 550 – 700 °C. The substrate predominantly consisted of martensite with small amounts of ferrite and the coating consisted of α-Fe(Zn) and ≥ 15 vol.% Γ-Fe3Zn10. Based on the fraction of Γ-Fe3Zn10 and the coating thickness, robust cathodic corrosion protection is expected from GA80-coated steel K. Furthermore, no evidence of LME or severe microcracking was observed in the microstructure for DHPF temperatures of 550–700 °C for steel K and ductile fracture was observed in tensile coupons. Tensile testing for laboratory-scale DHPF for steel K showed that the mechanical properties such as YS, UE and PUE were not significantly affected by DHPF temperatures of 550-700 °C. Moreover, the targets of UTS ≥ 1400 MPa, and YS ≥ 1000 MPa were met for all DHPF temperatures of 550 – 700 °C. Through pilot-scale tensile testing of steel K, it was determined that the targets for tensile strengths (UTS and YS), were achieved across various conditions involving austenitization at 890 °C for 60 – 240 s and DHPF temperatures ranging from 550 – 700 °C. These findings strongly suggest that industrial feasibility is attainable for DHPF of GA-coated steel K at lower temperatures, enabling the attainment of desirable mechanical properties and robust corrosion protection. Thus, it can be concluded that the process window yielding desirable properties for steel K was determined to be austenitization at 890 °C for 60 – 240 s and DHPF temperatures between 550 – 700 °C. / Thesis / Master of Applied Science (MASc) / The forming process of the steels used in the automotive industry is not suitable for zinc coatings because it requires pressing at high temperatures to ensure obtaining strong steels. Thus, zinc coatings cannot be utilized despite the desirable cathodic corrosion protection properties they can provide. This study aimed to determine a suitable process window for a zinc-coated prototype steel that would have both high strength and desirable corrosion protection. The zinc-coated prototype steel was pressed at lower temperatures. It was observed that the target mechanical properties were met for all the temperatures tested. Moreover, robust cathodic corrosion protection is expected for all the temperatures. Furthermore, pilot-scale tests yielded comparable results to those obtained in the laboratory, indicating that this process can be successfully applied in the industry as it possesses a sufficiently large process window.
