System Support for Hosting Services on Server ClusterTseng, Chun-wei 22 July 2004 (has links)
Since the speedy popularity of Internet infrastructure and explosive increasing of World Wide Web services, a lot of traditional companies had web-enabled their business over Internet and used WWW as their application platform. Those web services, such as the on-line search, e-learning, e-commence, multimedia, network service, e-government etc., need a stable and powerful web server to support the huge capability.
The web hosting service becomes increasingly important in which the service providers offer system resources to store and to provide Web access to contents from individuals, institutions, and companies, who lack resources or expertise to maintain their Web site. Web server cluster is a popular architecture used by the hosting service providers as a way to create scalable and highly available solutions. However, hosting a variety of contents from different customers on such a distributed server system faces new design and management problems. This dissertation describes the work pursuing for constructing a system to address the challenges of hosting Web content on a server cluster environment.
Based on the achievement of the software-based content-aware distributor, some high repetition and fixity tasks originally treated by software module are delivered to hardware module for speeding up the packet processes and for sharing the loads on the software module. Our software-based distributor is implemented in Linux kernel as a loadable module. A few system calls in user level are built to support the integration of resource management.

Frameworks.

Evaluating and enhancing websites : a case study of an Eritrean state owned media website - shabait.comMahmoud, Siham Mukhtar 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Ministry of Information of Eritrea is basically aimed at providing the society with news,
information, education and entertainment. In addition to its service presentation through radio,
TV and printed press the Ministry of Information has taken the initiative to present its
services in the digital way by publishing a website known as shabait.com. But as the
technique is new to the country as well as to the organization, it is to be expected that there
will be inaccuracies in the way the website was designed. Hence, evaluating and redesigning
shabait.com with the goal of making it informative, attractive and easy to use will be very
beneficial to the organization as well as to users of the website.
This recently launched website is not very attractive and not successfully directed to its users.
Therefore, the main aim of this study is to assess and find the best way of presenting
information digitally to the Eritrean society, as well as to anyone interested in finding out
about Eritrea through the State owned media website.
This study was firstly approached by gathering previously written relevant information from
books, journals, and the Internet. In addition to that interviews with concerned people in
Eritrea were held to understand the aim, difficulties and challenges of the website.
Subsequently the website was assessed according to the evaluation criteria developed, based
on the literature review. The evaluation of the website assumed three different approaches of
qualitative as well as quantitative types. A usability test with both quantitative and qualitative
questions was done through a questionnaire, which was analyzed statistically. A competitive
analysis, of qualitative type with two international websites was also made.
In order to create a good quality website, it is essential to have clearly specified goals, policies
and strategies, and adequate advanced human as well as technological resources, so that it will
be easy to overcome the common challenges such as competition, diversity of users, budget
constraints, and inadequacy of policy instruments. The findings of the evaluation of
shabait.com indicate that the website is not attractive, is user unfriendly, of low content
quality as well as with low download speed and, more importantly, was not advertised well.
Therefore, shabait.com is not fit to be considered as a sole first hand information provider
website for the Eritrean society as well as for anybody who is concerned about Eritrea. At the
end of the study recommendations of how the website can be modified to be successful are
listed.

The presentation of self on a decentralised WebGuy, Amy January 2017 (has links)
Self presentation is evolving; with digital technologies, with the Web and personal publishing, and then with mainstream adoption of online social media. Where are we going next? One possibility is towards a world where we log and own vast amounts of data about ourselves. We choose to share - or not - the data as part of our identity, and in interactions with others; it contributes to our day-to-day personhood or sense of self. I imagine a world where the individual is empowered by their digital traces (not imprisoned), but this is a complex world. This thesis examines the many factors at play when we present ourselves through Web technologies. I optimistically look to a future where control over our digital identities are not in the hands of centralised actors, but our own, and both survey and contribute to the ongoing technical work which strives to make this a reality. Decentralisation changes things in unexpected ways. In the context of the bigger picture of our online selves, building on what we already know about self-presentation from decades of Social Science research, I examine what might change as we move towards decentralisation; how people could be affected, and what the possibilities are for a positive change. Finally I explore one possible way of self-presentation on a decentralised social Web through lightweight controls which allow an audience to set their expectations in order for the subject to meet them appropriately. I seek to acknowledge the multifaceted, complicated, messy, socially-shaped nature of the self in a way that makes sense to software developers. Technology may always fall short when dealing with humanness, but the framework outlined in this thesis can provide a foundation for more easily considering all of the factors surrounding individual self-presentation in order to build future systems which empower participants.
