Alcoholism Treatment Follow-up Related to Staff Members' Effectiveness

DuBois, Richard L. 05 1900 (has links)
The relationship was investigated between named staff members and four measures of reported alocohol consumption by alcoholics followed up one year after hospitalizstion in state hospitals. The 559 representative subjects were located, interviewed, and matched with 65 staff members named as "most helpful" to determine social, economic, and drinking aspects. Named personnel were administered the A-B Scale by Campbell, Stevens, Uhlenhuth, and Johansson (1968). Subjects naming A-staff members reported significantly lower levels of alcohol consumption on two of four measures as compared to subjects naming A/B- or B-staff members. Additional followup variables tended to support this conclusion.

History of Self-Disclosure and Premature Termination from Therapy

Rose, Grace (Grace Elizabeth) 05 1900 (has links)
The present study was designed to investigate the hypothesis that female clients who tend to terminate therapy prematurely will have been assigned to a male therapist. The study also tested the hypothesis that female clients who defect from therapy will have reported a history of low self-disclosure to individuals of the same sex as their therapist. Neither hypothesis was supported by the results of this study, but findings suggest a possible bias in the manner by which male and female therapists select their clients for therapy. It also appears that female defectors may be over-identifying with their family of origin or that they may be overly dependent on it as a resource system. This may be the reason for their apparent difficulty in developing a prototype that will accommodate their therapist.

The Effect of Touch on Interpersonal Attraction of Selected Patients in an Initial Interview Held in a Neuropsychiatric Setting

Spinn, Richard 08 1900 (has links)
This study was designed to determine the effect of touch on the interpersonal attraction between therapist and patient. Four instruments were used to measure the effect, those measurements included "Client's Personal Reaction Questionnaire," "Attitudes Toward Psychotherapy and Psychotherapists Scale," actual physical distance and actual timed verbal measure. The general nature of the research hypotheses stated that the touch technique would increase the interpersonal attraction of the patients toward the therapist as indicated by the four measures. The results of the study led to the conclusion that touch during a single interview session effects statistically significant change in interpersonal attraction when measured by actual physical distance. However change in interpersonal attraction was not found when measured by the "Client's Personal Reaction Questionnaire," "Attitudes Toward Psychotherapy and Psychotherapists Scale" and an actual timed verbal measure. Implications of the study, based on observations of the experimenter, were that touch is successful in helping hospitalized neuropsychiatric patients increase their interpersonal attraction and that this attraction cannot always be measured by global questionnaires and specific amounts of verbalization. A similar study should be replicated with subjects other than neuropsychiatric patients, such as hospitalized medical patients, college students and children.

So too is the relationship of therapist and patient. This study was aimed at seeking physical therapists' perceptions about the human body and how these perceptions affect the therapeutic process. As a working method, we used qualitative research and data collection through semi-structured interview. We interviewed 12 physical therapists in clinics and hospitals. The inclusion criteria considered legally qualified professionals and that performed their activities in hospitals and/or clinics. After transcribing the interviews, data analysis was performed using the analytical categories. The study allowed to find the following insights: the proposed theme is not subject to the usual reflection of professionals; age, gender, time of training and performing are not differentiating factors for the perception of the physical therapist; the area of operation interferes with the perception, professionals working in hospitals and intensive care units have a more perception focused on Cartesian and mechanistic concepts; there is a two way in the perception of the body and the individual: the primary vision is focused on physical and physiological issues, but there is a merger of view on issues mental, emotional and social, thus the need for humanistic and comprehensive vision in dealing with the patient also was noted; the physical therapist realizes that he is not fully prepared to work the changes that occur with the patient as a result of the therapeutic process and point to the need for better training at the university / O processo da construção humana está relacionado ao social e se realiza na relação com os outros por meio do corpo.

A experi?ncia de estagi?rios de fisioterapia no relacionamento com pacientes ambulatoriais / The experience of physical therapist interns in their relationship to patients in an outpatient clinic

Sousa, Nadini Brand?o de 11 February 2015 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-04T18:28:20Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 NADINI BRANDAO DE SOUSA.pdf: 1145016 bytes, checksum: 139b21e96126cbd97f2d9e247d8f4201 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-02-11 / Pontif?cia Universidade Cat?lica de Campinas / Inspired by the biomedical health model, the practice of physical therapy has specific characteristics with regard to patient care. Physical contact between therapist and patient and the frequency of the assistance involves the development of a peculiar type of interpersonal relationship. This research aimed to grasp, phenomenologically, the experience of the physical therapy trainees regarding their relationship with outpatients at a university clinic. It is an exploratory qualitative research, phenomenologically inspired. Eight individual encounters were carried out with undergraduates who are in their seventh, ninth and tenth semesters. After each of the encounters, the researcher wrote a first-person narrative, based on her impressions of the meaning of the lived experience of the participants. A narrative synthesis was then developed in order to capture the meaning of the experience as such. The analysis made it possible to conclude that trainees strive to offer a treatment that includes, not only technique but also attitudes of respect, warmth and welcome. Caring for patients with neurological problems, especially those involving progressive degeneration, is signified by the interns as unrewarding since recovery is impossible and verbal communication is difficult. They also feel distressed, as they perceive themselves emotionally involved with the patients, despite the attempt to maintain a strictly professional approach. On the other hand, in a broad way, this relationship is referred to as an opportunity for new learnings and psychological maturity with a potential for growth both in personal and professional life.
