The thesis examines court sentencing decisions in theft cases within the context of a proportionality-based sentencing framework. Whilst relatively little is known of the magistrates’ court and Crown Court interpretations of proportionality, such as the impact that various aggravating and mitigating factors may have on the sentencing decision, the thesis examines those factors (relating to both the offence and the offender) that appear to have the greatest impact on the sentencing decision. Additionally, it was accepted here that the courts may rely (to some extent) on a number of other sentencing justifications, particularly crime prevention through rehabilitation, deterrence and incapacitation. The thesis finds that only a small number of factors individually appear to affect the sentencing decision. In other cases, a number of factors work together to increase the seriousness of the offence and consequently inform the sentencing decision. The thesis also finds that whilst proportionality considerations may dominate the sentencing decisions in some cases, in others the courts appear to have high regard to the need to prevent crime, particularly where an offender has a demonstrated pattern of offending due to a drug addiction. Whilst in some cases these crime reduction aims may be used within the confines of proportionality, the courts’ desire to prevent crime may eclipse proportionality constraints, ultimately leading to an apparently disproportionate sentence.

In River Thieves, the white settlers are responsible for the vanishing of the Beothuk which reflects the spiritural loss of the white settlers. The major themes of truth, regret and guilt are discussed in the novel.

The aim of this essay is to test how a teacher can use a pre-reading strategy in the ESL classroom. The pre-reading strategy will be used with song lyrics instead of the usual classroom textbooks. The reaserch questions for this essay are Does the pre-reading strategy “THIEVES” give any results when teaching English as a second language in the classroom? Can any results be discerned after six weeks of working with this pre-reading strategy in a Swedish ESL classroom context? Do students find it easier to work with song lyrics rather than other types of texts?

Text in Afrikaans / Die aard en omvang van motorvoertuigdiefstal in Suid-Afrika, het die ondersoeker aangespoor om 'n studie van die verskynsel soos dit in die Pretoria-Sentraal polisiestasiegebied voorkom, te loods. Data wat uit die dokumentere studie van gebeure ingesamel is, is rekenkundig gekwantifiseer en het besondere misdaadpatrone wat betrekking het op motordiefstal aan die lig gebring. Dit het tot die formulering van 'n multidissiplinere misdaadvoorkomingsbestuursmodel bygedra. Vanwee die erns van die verskynsel en die ekonomiese implikasies wat dit meebring, moet daar op 'n voortdurende grondslag navorsing uitgevoer word ten einde metodes te verskaf om die omvang van motorvoertuigdiefstal te verminder. Die owerheid moet 'n belangrike rol speel in die oplossing van die probleem. / The nature and extent of motorvehicle theft in South Africa encouraged the researcher to pilot a study into the phenomenon as it manifests itself at the Pretoria-Central police station area. Data gathered, in a documentary study of events, has been arithmetically quantified and reveal particular crime patterns relating to motorcar theft. This contributed to the formulation of a multidisciplinary crime prevention management model. Due to the seriousness of the phenomenon and the economic implications it causes, in depth research needs to be undertaken on a continuous basis to establish means to reduce the extent of motorvehicle theft.
