Multicultural World in Zadie Smith's Recent Novels

Initially, the diploma thesis introduces the overall context of contemporary AngloAmerican post-colonial literature and defines its fundamental postulates, such as ethnicity, cultural diversity, hybridity, globalization, and multiculturalism. Furthermore, the thesis briefly mentions several British authors of various ethnic background (Zadie Smith, Hanif Kureishi, Salman Rushdie). The main aim of the thesis is to analyze Zadie Smith's three most recent novels (White Teeth, On Beauty, N-W) in the context of multicultural environment of contemporary Anglo-American world. The thesis further concentrates on author's narrative techniques, prevailing themes in the novels, the influence of English literary tradition, namely of E. M. Forster and David Lodge, and examines verbal and situational humor of the aforesaid novels.

This thesis handles with contemporary literature for solo double bass as well as chamber ensembles with double bass, influenced by eastern cultures. It deals with masterpieces of european and asian componists, especially with Giacinto Scelsi’s life, his double bass pieces and also the duet for the violin and the double bass Together composed by Isang Yun. It searches for relationships among traditional music of different cultures and contemporary classical music. In this thesis you can find informations about interpretation techniques used in contemporary music and about innovators of the double bass playing techniques. As the information sources are used available books and catalogues, web pages, music recordings, as well as interview with the double bassist Joëlle Léandre.

České a moravské vánoční tradice / Czech and Moravian Christmas traditions

This dissertation is looking into the Czech and Moravian Christmas traditions in detail. The theoretical part provides a complete picture and characteristic of the Christmas period. The focus then turns to topics discussing the historical background, timelines, Christmas symbolic, sayings and mainly the Christmas traditions. The theory mostly draws on resources from expert literature, which is supplemented with information from other resources on the given topic. In the practical part, the author then analyzes the different ways of spending Christmas times in the Central Czech and South Moravian regions in depth. The course of the Christmas time was mapped by interviews with chosen respondents from contemporary Czech households. The adherence to or diversion from traditions, new trends and tendencies and the influence of commercialization on the Christmas holidays were given a higher importance. The closing chapter is dedicated to a comparison, whose main goal was to explain the eventual differences in adherence to Christmas traditions among sociocultural characteristics, mainly by the location.

Opera dei pupi / Opera dei pupi

The aim of this thesis is to introduce the popular puppet theatre called Opera dei Pupi, which was developed mainly in Sicily in the second half of the 19th century. The first part desrcibes literary influences that nourished this tradition, from which puppeteers derived topics for their repertoire. These stories were primarily about the French king Charlemagne and his knights and were called paladins. I am trying to map the form of an adaptation of this topic for Opera dei Pupi needs and the way of connection with oral tradition. Furthermore I am going to mention the secondary repertoire of the theatre for example farce. Next chapter focuses on a formal side of the Opera dei Pupi including puppeteer's personality, his work and activities, structure of the theatre itself, characteristics of puppets and handling them. Furthermore this section also describes a specific concept of everyday's performances "to be continued" and how were these performaces organized in practice. The analytical part focuses on a process of putting plot on a scene, which includes both improvisation and fixed rules approach. The principal theme of this part is the so-called copione, which are the puppeteer's own handwritten notes, on which the show was based. The reason why I choose this topic was the fact that I haven't managed to find any comprehensive overview of local traditions and habits and also that I have been living in this area all my life and so I have many findings of my own to use. There are new traditions raising in recent years and also some of the old ones are beeing revived. The aim of this thesis is to discover and note the traditions, which were held in the past and also the traditions that are new. At first we look at the Czech Merano area, describe it's nature characteristics, history and some of the famous people, who came from there. Then there is a list of concrete traditions split into groups by its type - from the historical traditions based on folk and christian holidays to the modern ones. It also reminds some of the extincted traditions. There also is a remark of the local chronicle, which has been an important source of information. In the conclusion there is a short notice about the contribution of this work and some of the possibilities of it's utilization in practice.

It aims mainly at missionary work of the Jesuit missionaries in the 16th and at the beginning of the 17th century. The thesis mentions (for familiarization) an overview of spiritual traditions and religious streams. It also refers about the propagation of Christianity since the 19th century until the last few decades and outlines the relation of Christianity and traditional Japanese spiritual streams.

Japan, as a country with remarkably strong tradition of craftsmanship, undertook significant changes in this area in the 20th century. One of the main areas in this field is a Japanese folk pottery. The aim of this paper is to present how the ceramic craft and all its aspects transformed from the Meiji Restoration to the present. Firstly, it focuses on introducing the styles of folk pottery and the way traditional potters in the Tokugawa period worked, then it focuses on various influences which affected the field and the changes that brought. In the final part, the work focuses on the description of ceramic craft nowadays, the comparison with the past and tries to contemplate on the philosophy of tradition.

This thesis, from the theoretical point of view, is concerned with the role of each generation in the wider, multi-generational family in the present day. The fundamental subject in this study is a preschool child and his/her bond to other family members, who play essential part in the child's upbringing and socialisation (family and its changes, legal status, pro- family political movements, moral education, the role of grandparents, the full meaning of a functional family for a child's healthy development. There is a full description of the research, mapping the way and course of important festivities in the multi-generational families with a different social status, education as well as different educational surroundings in the empirical part of the research. The study examines the role of the oldest generation in handing the traditions and family customs over to the younger generations and the role each member assumes in the realization of the celebration in the multi-generational family living together.
