Extraction of Hot QCD Matter Transport Coefficients utilizing Microscopic Transport Theory

Demir, Nasser Soliman January 2010 (has links)
<p>Ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) are thought to have produced a state of matter called the Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP). The QGP forms when nuclear matter governed by Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) reaches a temperature and baryochemical potential necessary to achieve the transition of hadrons (bound states of quarks and gluons) to {it deconfined} quarks and gluons. Such conditions have been achieved at RHIC, and the resulting QGP created exhibits properties of a near perfect fluid. In particular, strong evidence shows that the QGP exhibits a very small shear viscosity to entropy density ratio &eta/s, near the lower bound predicted for that quantity by Anti-deSitter space/Conformal Field Theory (AdS/CFT) methods of &eta/s = $hbar$/ 4 &pi $k_B$ where $hbar$ is Planck's constant and $k_B$ is Boltzmann's constant. As the produced matter expands and cools, it evolves through a phase described by a hadron gas with rapidly increasing $eta/s$.</p><p>This thesis presents robust calculations of $eta/s$ for hadronic and partonic media as a function of temperature using the Green-Kubo formalism. An analysis is performed for the behavior of $eta/s$ to mimic situations of the hadronic media at RHIC evolving out of chemical equilibrium, and systematic uncertainties are assessed for our method. In addition, preliminary results are presented for the bulk viscosity to entropy density ratio $zeta/s$, whose behavior is not well-known in a relativistic heavy ion collisions. The diffusion coefficient for baryon number is investigated, and an algorithm is presented to improve upon the previous work of investigation of heavy quark diffusion in a thermal QGP. </p><p>By combining the results of my investigations for $eta/s$ from our microscopic transport models with what is currently known from the experimental results on elliptic flow from RHIC, I find that the trajectory of $eta/s$ in a heavy ion collision has a rich structure, especially near the deconfinement transition temperature $T_c$. I have helped quantify the viscous hadronic effects to enable investigators to constrain the value of $eta/s$ for the QGP created at RHIC.</p> / Dissertation

[en] EXPERIMENTAL DETERMINATION OF THE HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT IN DUCTS OF ELLIPTICAL CROSS SECTION / [pt] DETERMINAÇÃO EXPERIMENTAL DO COEFICIENTE DE TRANSFERÊNCIA DE CALOR EM DUTOS DE SEÇÃO ELÍPTICA

HARRY T MAIA VINAGRE 15 March 2018 (has links)
[en] Experiments were performed to determine local heat transfer coefficients for the turbulent flow in a duct with elliptical cross section. The boundary conditions imposed were isothermal wall and abrupt-contraction at the entrance built into a large wall. Both entrance-region and fully-developed results were obtained, whereas the Reynolds number was varied in the overall range 7,000-60,000. The aspect ratios 0.12, 0.25 and 0.5 were investigated and the results compared with the ones for parallel planes and for circular tubes, found in the open literature. The measured heat transfer coefficients displayed a maximum deviation of 16 percent relative to the results for the circular tube. Therefore, using elliptical ducts in heat exchangers is in general advisable as far as heat transfer is concerned.

Anisotropic shear viscosity and critical behavior of non-hydrodynamic quasinormal modes in strongly coupled plasmas / Viscosidade de cisalhamento anisotrópica e comportamento crítico dos modos quasinormais não-hidrodinâmicos em plasmas fortemente acoplados

Siqueira, Maicon Zaniboni 03 July 2017 (has links)
In this thesis we use the holographic gauge/gravity duality to study two different aspects of strongly coupled non-Abelian plasmas. In the first topic we study the effects of strong (Abelian) magnetic fields on the transport coefficients of a strongly coupled non-Abelian plasma. Due to the spatial anisotropy created by the magnetic field, the most general viscosity tensor of a magnetized plasma has 5 shear viscosity coefficients and 2 bulk viscosities. We use the holographic correspondence for a strongly coupled N=4 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) plasma to evaluate the shear viscosity perpendicular to the magnetic field and the shear viscosity parallel to the field. In the presence of a magnetic field, the shear viscosity perpendicular to the field saturates the Kovtun-Son-Starinets viscosity bound while in the direction parallel to the field the bound is violated. The second topic investigated in this thesis is motivated by the study of the near equilibrium behavior of strongly interacting non-Abelian plasmas that display a critical point in their phase diagram. We focus on the spectra of non-hydrodynamic quasinormal modes of a strongly coupled N=4 SYM plasma in the presence of a chemical potential, which displays a critical point in equilibrium. Except close to the critical point, we observe that by increasing the chemical potential one generally increases the damping rate of the quasinormal modes, which leads to a reduction of the characteristic equilibration times in the dual strongly coupled plasma. However, as one approaches the critical point the typical equilibration time increases though its derivative with respect to the chemical potential diverges with an exponent equal to -1/2. We also find a purely imaginary non-hydrodynamical mode in the vector diffusion channel at nonzero chemical potential which dictates the equilibration time in this channel near the critical point.

Teoria cinética para misturas de gases ionizados / Kinetic theory for mixtures of ionized gases

Rodbard, Mauro Gomes 23 October 1995 (has links)
We develop a kinetic theory for ionized gases mixtures under the presence of electric and magnetic fields. We verify that the use of representation theorems makes the Chapman-Enskog method more direct. However the combined method shows up as extremely simple where the transport coefficients are determined through inversion of second-order and fourth order tensors. We calculate also the collision integrals for possible interactions in ionized gases like: between charged particles, between charged particles and neutral particles and between neutral particles. As an application of the combined method, we determine the electrical and thermal conductivity coefficients, thermo-electric and shear viscosity coefficients for a completely ionized gas. We obtain their respective graphics considering an ionized gas of helium.

Étude de la cinétique chimique et des propriétés de transport d'un plasma d'arc SF6-C2F4 en déséquilibre thermique : application à l'étude des disjoncteurs haute tension / Study of the chemical kinetic and transport properties of a sf6-c2f4 arc plasma in thermal non-equilibrium : application to the study of high voltage circuit breaker

Vanhulle, Gabriel 13 December 2018 (has links)
Modelling a high voltage circuit breaker using a MHD model needs plasma properties databanks to simulate the electric arc behavior. The local thermodynamic equilibrium hypothesis is often used to calculate these properties. However, the equilibrium conditions are not satisfied near the walls or the electrodes, or during the zero crossing of the current. The thermal nonequilibrium considerably modify the chemistry and properties of the plasma. The study of these properties for a 2t plasma is the subject of this thesis. The first part of this thesis presents the industrial context at the origin of this study. Basics assumptions for the 2t hypothesis are then explained. In this section, special attention is given to the temperatures characteristic of the internal energy modes. Two sets of hypotheses concerning these temperatures are used in this work, and the choice of these hypotheses is discussed. The second part of this work is dedicated to the calculation of sf6-c2f4 plasma composition at 2t. This calculation will be done with two different methods: the first is based on the mass action law extended to 2t, and the second on a collisional-radiative calculation. Examples of compositions obtained with these two methods are presented. The hypotheses concerning the temperatures of populating of the internal energy levels are discussed in the light of these results. The third chapter of this thesis deals with the calculation of the thermodynamic properties at 2t of the plasma. The theoretical formulations of each of these properties are first recalled, and the results from these expressions are then presented and discussed, for the two methods of calculating the composition. The fourth chapter is dedicated to calculating the transport coefficients of a sf6-c2f4 plasma at 2t. This part is based on a bibliographic study of the already existing methods of calculation and the essential data to obtain these properties (collision integrals). For each property (viscosity, electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity) the various calculation methods identified in the literature are compared. The choice of the most appropriate calculation technique is made by comparing the results to the ETL. Particular attention is paid to the calculation of the reactive part of the thermal conductivity, and a formulation adapted to the needs of this work is proposed. The results from these expressions are presented and discussed following the same logic when in the previous chapter.

Microscopic Chaos, Fractals, and Transport in Nonequilibrium Steady States.

Klages, Rainer 29 December 2004 (has links) (PDF)
A fundamental challenge is to understand nonequilibrium statistical mechanics starting from microscopic chaos in the equations of motion of a many-particle system. In this thesis we summarize recent theoretical advances along these lines. We focus on two different approaches to nonequilibrium transport: One considers Hamiltonian dynamical systems under nonequilibrium boundary conditions, another one suggests a non-Hamiltonian approach to nonequilibrium situations created by external electric fields and by temperature or velocity gradients. A surprising result related to the former approach is that in simple low-dimensional periodic models the deterministic transport coefficients are typically fractal functions of control parameters. These fractal transport coefficients yield the first central theme of this thesis. We exemplify this phenomenon by deterministic diffusion in a simple chaotic map. We then construct an arsenal of analytical and numerical methods for computing further transport coefficients such as electrical conductivities andchemical reaction rates. These methods are applied to hierarchies of chaotic dynamical systems that are successively getting more complex, starting from abstract one-dimensional maps generalizing a simple random walk on the line up to particle billiards that should be directly accessible in experiments. In all cases, the resulting transport coefficients turn out to be either strictly fractal, or at least to be profoundly irregular. The impact of random perturbations on these quantities is also investigated. We furthermore provide some access roads towards a physical understanding of these fractalities. The second central theme is formed by a critical assessment of the non-Hamiltonian approach to nonequilibrium transport. Here we consider situations where the nonequilibrium constraints pump energy into a system, hence there must be some thermal reservoir that prevents the system from heating up. For this purpose a deterministic and time-reversible modeling of thermal reservoirs was proposed in form of Gaussian and Nose-Hoover thermostats. This approach yielded simple relations between fundamental quantities of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics and of dynamical systems theory. Our goal is to critically assesses the universality of these results. As a vehicle of demonstration we employ the driven periodic Lorentz gas, a toy model for the classical dynamics of an electron in a metal under application of an electric field. Applying different types of thermal reservoirs to this system we compare the resulting nonequilibrium steady states with each other. Along the same lines we discuss an interacting many-particle system under shear and heat. Finally, we outline an unexpected relationship between deterministic thermostats and active Brownian particles modeling biophysical cell motility.

Simard, Corinne 12 1900 (has links)
The recent developments achieved by tri-dimensionals magnetohydrodynamic (3D-MHD) global simulations of solar convection allow us to generate an organized large-scale magnetic fields with well-synchronized hemispheric polarity reversal. Because the vast majority of these simulations do not include a modelization of the Sun's surface layer, the generation of their dynamo is thus solely due to the action of the turbulent electromotive force (EMF) in conjunction with differential rotation. From this EMF, different methods can be used to extract the turbulent transport coefficients. In particular, various authors found a full 9 component alpha-tensor (first order coefficients) where all the components are of the same order of magnitude. This finding calls into question the alphaOmega approximation made by the vast majority of mean field dynamo models. We generalized a first order (alpha-tensor) singular value decomposition (SVD) analysis procedure to extract the 18 additional components of the second order tensor (beta-tensor). The alpha and beta tensors obtained by this new procedure as applied to the EULAG-MHD outputs, are similar to the equivalent alpha and beta tensors obtained using the second order correlation approximation (SOCA). By introducing the first order turbulent transport coefficients in a mean field dynamo model, we study the magnetic solutions where double dynamo modes were observed. This analysis allows us to compare the mean field dynamo solutions produced with the EMF, as extracted from EULAG-MHD, with the real magnetic output of EULAG-MHD. This proof of concept demonstrated that the quasi-biennal oscillation observed in the surface toroidal magnetic field in EULAG-MHD can be produced by the inductive action of a secondary dynamo. A similar quasi-biennal oscillation signal is also observed in multiple proxies of the solar activity whose origin is still not confirmed. Although the physical set of properties under which the two numerical models described above operate are different from the Sun, the fact that both models can reproduce a secondary dynamo shows us that the inductive action of the EMF can easily produce two dynamos. Finally, in order to study epochs of grand minima that still cannot be reproduced in global 3D-MHD simulations of convection, we added a magnetic feedback on the mean azimutal flow in our kinematic mean field model. This non-kinematic alpha2Omega model was able to reproduce the tendency of the Prandtl number (Pm) to control the ratio of the modulation period. More specifically, we found an inverse relation between Pm and the ratio of the main magnetic cycle period to the grand minima occurrence period. Moreover, by analyzing a simulation of a length of 50,000 years, where aperiodic periods of grand minima and maxima are observed, we found a waiting time distribution (WTD) of the grand minima close to an exponential, a characteristic also observed in the reconstruction of the solar activity. Finally, the level of fluctuation in the surface differential rotation associated with epochs of grand minima is ~1%. This level of fluctuation was also observed in historical reconstructions of the surface differential rotation during the Maunder minimum.
