Sanches, Andréa Bandeira January 2009 (has links)
The sustainability can be seen as a new discipline of human knowledge, adding to the scope of the conflict between the environmental, economic and social dimensions. This Thesis developed a methodology for assessment of the sustainability applied to wastewater treatment systems and its application as a case study. The methodology should be seen as a tool that can extend the decison making process, starting from a preliminary study of design, the stage preceding the development of a project from a wastewater treatment plant, going beyond the technical and economical criteria. More, inside its structure was implemented a participatory platform, compound by the community under study and by experts in the field of environmental sanitation. Were compared three alternatives of procedures that can be implanted in a wastewater treatment plant, located in Capão da Canoa: UASB reactor and constructed wetlands, stabilization ponds and constructed wetlands, as well as the activated sludge system followed by a stage of disinfection. From the analyses of those cases, the alternative that included the stabilization ponds associated with constructed wetlands showed the best performance under the perspective of the three dimensions of sustainability. Based on the results, it was observed that the assessment methodology proposed can, indeed, elucidate the designers on the issue of sustainability associated with wastewater treatment systems and promote a participatory decision process with more fair and transparent technical solutions.

Abstract: The project was developed with the aim of studying the treatment and the reuse of rapid filter backwash water for recycling in this role, within a closed cycle, under system independent of production activities of a water treatment plant. The system was assembled with a polymer blending unit, a gravel preliminary upflow filter and a dual layer filter(F3), similar to those used in the water treatment plant. The pre-filter was withdrawn because it did not provided the expected efficiency. With this provision, it was monitored the number of times that water obtained could be reused without affecting the quality of water filtration top of the filter F1 which proved to be greater or equal to five times. The loss of filter backwash water in the system was 0,13%, quite significant when compared to the usual 2 to 5%. The system always worked with flocculent particles, not with colloidal particles. / Mestrado / Saneamento e Ambiente / Mestre em Engenharia Civil

Avaliação do impacto de lodos de estações de tratamento de água à biota aquática através de estudos ecotoxicológicos / Evaluation of the impact of sludges from water treatment plants on the aquatic biota using ecotoxicological studies

Rosana Maria Barbosa 26 June 2000 (has links)
Sludges from two water treatment plants, which use ferric chloride (ETA-Paiol-ETA-1) and alum (ETA-SAAE-ETA-2) as coagulants were characterized physicall y and chemically at two seasons (wet and dry). The sludge was subjected to acute toxicity tests to cladoceran (Daphnis similis), midges (Chironomus xanthus) and fishes (Hyphessobrycon eques) and chronic toxicity tests using clacloceran (D. similis). It also was observed the impact of discharged sludge on benthic communities in surface waters at two water treatment plants. Acute toxicity tests evaluated sludge effects on mortality, while chronic toxicity tests assessed effects on reproduction and mortality. In general, sludges from two water treatment plants did not show acute toxicity on organisms-test, only toxicity traces. Ferric chloride sludge showed chronic toxicity on lower brood production and high mortality rate. Alum sludge showed chronic toxicity only on brood production. Sludges from water treatment plants caused detrimental effects to benthic macroinvertebrate communities. This effect was determined by Diptera predominance at bodies receiving discharge from water treatment plants. The turbidity, solids series, nutrients (N and P) and metals (Al, Mn and Fe) in the sludge vary when experiments are carried out in the dry and wet season. Together with COD, there were the main parameters that cause the increase in degradation of bodies receiving discharge from water treatment plants. Thus the disposal of \"in natura\" effluents from water treatment plants damages aquatic biota and affects receiving bodies water and sediment quality.

Análise de viabilidade da utilização de lodo de ETA coagulado com cloreto de polialumínio (PAC) composto com areia como agregado miúdo em concreto para recomposição de calçadas: estudo de caso na ETA do município de Mirassol-SP / Viability analysis of water treatment plant sludge coagulated with aluminum polychloride used as small aggregate associated with sand in concrete for pavements recomposition: case of study in water treatment plant of Mirassol-SP

Álvaro José Calheiros da Costa 25 February 2011 (has links)
This work was done wishing to solve two problems: the reduction of the environmental impact caused by the inappropriate sludge disposal in Mirassol and also the reduction in the costs by reducing the volume of sludge destined to landfill and by reducing the volume of concrete small aggregates which, in spite of not representing the biggest cost of all materials involved, actually represents a cost reduction to the concessionary which needs to remake daily the pavement broke to the execution of maintenance and operation works in the water and wastewater systems. Considering the fact that Mirassol\'s water treatment plant does not have a sludge management plan, it was chosen the sun exposal method with two different times (15 and 30 days) to dry the samples of sludge. The first sample, the driest, was used in the lixiviation and solubilization experiments and the second one in the experiments involving the concrete. The objective of lixiviation and solubilization experiments was to classify the sludge according to ABNT NBR 10.004/2004. This experiments resulted manganese, plumbean and cadmium excess, especially the manganese with 400 times more concentration than the permitted by the law. So, according to these results, Mirassol\'s water treatment plant sludge was classified as Class II A. That\'s important to observe that, despite the fact that in Mirassol they use the CPA, the sludge did not shown high concentrations of aluminum. Keeping the attention on the concrete to pavements, it was noticed that doesn\'t exist in Brazil any law to discipline its confection and because of that, it was chosen the empirical method, used by the workers daily with 1:2:3 in mass. The viability analysis of the sludge use as aggregate to concrete pavement was based on the compression and traction experiments which demonstrated that, considering traces with 5%, 10% and 20% of sludge incorporated, the results was satisfactory. In fact, all of the samples had results above the aim for compression (15 MPa). On the other hand, considering the traction experiments, there\'s no references in Brazil for pavements, but it was possible to observe that the sludge addiction affected more this characteristic than the compression. However, the traction results were also satisfactory. Finally, this work recommends the utilization of 10% of sludge incorporated in concrete to pavements because they had the best results considering the compression and traction experiments.

Abstract: The occurrence of potential endocrine disruptor compounds (EDC) in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent and surface waters at high concentrations harmful for aquatic life has been an interesting research field due to the probability of these micro pollutants to break through water treatment plant (WTP). The present paper evaluated the occurrence of natural estrogens such as estrone (E1), 17ß-estradiol (E2), estriol (E3), as well as the synthetic estrogen 17a ethinylestradiol (EE2) and nonylphenol (NP) at water supply systems of Campinas and Sumaré. Raw water from Atibaia River and treated water samples were collected from Campinas WTP-3-and-4 and Sumaré WTP-2 over a three-week period. The analytic technique used was solid phase extraction and liquid chromatography/ tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The average results obtained for drinking water in Campinas and Sumaré were, respectively, 0.03 and 0.06ng/L for E1, 0.93 and 1.32ng/L for E2, 0.70 and 0.72ng/L for E3, 91.2 and 154ng/L for EE2 and 6.14 and 4ng/L for NP. Campinas WTP obtained an average removal of = 80% of focused EDC, except for EE2, whose efficiency was 38%; Sumaré WTP removal efficiency was 80% for E1 and E2, 60% for E3 and NP and 41% for EE2. Chlorine oxidation was probably the major treatment step for EDC removal, though potentially estrogenic by-products could have been formed as well. The presence of EDC in drinking water, despite the low concentrations, could provide estrogenic activity, since it is well known that natural and synthetic estrogen in the environment can produce effects at very low concentration (1ng/L). / Doutorado / Saneamento e Ambiente / Doutor em Engenharia Civil

Změna kvality vody v malých povodích po postavení čistírny odpadních vod / Water quality change in small watersheds after sewage water treatment plant building

Rödlová, Sylva January 2010 (has links)
Změny kvality vody v malých tocích, vyvolané vybudováním čistírny odpadních vod, představují doposud málo studované a přitom velmi aktuální téma současné hydrologie. Mezi další typické změny patří navýšení hodnot 1-2 roky před uvedením čistírny do provozu a opožděná nitrifikace v toku způsobená nevhodným provozem čistírny. Mezi nejdůležitější faktory ovlivňující změny patří provoz čistírny, velikost průtoku recipientu, zemědělské...

Devenir de l’arsenic dans une papeterie : étude de cas / Arsenic fate in a pulp and paper mill : a case study

Michon, Clémence 04 February 2011 (has links)
Un traitement tertiaire par coagulation (par des sels d’aluminium) / floculation / flottation permet de diminuer encore la concentration en arsenic dans le rejet en fonction des conditions de fonctionnement / This study was about the sources and the fate of arsenic in a pulp and paper mill located in the Vosges, and particularly in the wastewater treatment plant, in order to understand the variations of the arsenic concentration in the treated effluent discharged in the Moselle River. The recovered papers used for the production of deinked pulp are the main source of arsenic for the pulp and paper mill, followed by the solid fuels incinerated in the boiler of the energy area of the mill. The main outputs are the ashes produced by the boiler, then the produced paper. The fate of the arsenic in the deinking process is complex and involves transfer phenomena between the pulp and the white water of the process. Arsenic present in white water could come from the suspended solids. Malfunctions in the energy area have caused the departure of ashes to the wastewater treatment plant via the washing water of the flue gas washer. Those ashes may contain a high arsenic concentration and could be one of the sources of the large variations of the arsenic concentration in the effluent of the wastewater treatment plant. This wastewater treatment plant is able to eliminate up to 50% of arsenic of the effluent thanks to neutralization/decantation and biotreatment by activated sludge. A tertiary treatment by coagulation (with aluminum salts) / flocculation / flotation permits to decrease the arsenic concentration in the effluent according to the operating conditions

Možnosti a meze vývozu vybraného českého zboží na ruský trh / Possibilities and limits of export of Czech goods to Russian market

Všetičková, Věra January 2014 (has links)
The diploma´s thesis deals with possibilities and limits of export of Czech goods with a specific focus on facilities for wastewater treatment plants in the Russian Federation. In compliance with the theory of internationalization, the first chapter introduces individual forms of entry to foreign markets. Choosing some of the entry modes including export, the thesis mentions specifics of their application on the Russian market. The following chapter outlines current Czech-Russian trade relations which result from valid bilateral, regional and multilateral agreements so as from the crucial political-economic events. In the case study the thesis deals with the very specific opportunities and barriers for the export of Czech facilities for wastewater treatment plants. Therefore, in the particular subchapters the thesis analyzes the current condition of wastewater treatment management in Russia and the legislative and program documents, which stimulate the development and modernization of existing infrastructure. Moreover, the thesis discusses factors that make it difficult to enter the Russian market by Czech companies. Since one of the problems is project financing in Russia, the last chapter deals with the possibilities of financing and insuring export with state support. Overall, the thesis aims to cover the stimuli for export of given goods to Russia, the problems which the exporters might face and their possible solutions as well.

An investigation into a treatment strategy for the Berg River water at the Voëlvlei water treatment plant

Swarts, R.J. (Raymond Joseph) 16 August 2011 (has links)
Since the demand for fresh potable water increases every year, it is important to have future water demand strategies in place. People expect a secure, high quality, water supply and the water supply industry is governed by increasingly stringent water quality guidelines and legislation. The Cape Metropolitan Area (CMA) faces the challenge of an increasing demand for fresh water in excess of the existing supply. The City is responsible for the planning and development of the local water supply resources as well as managing the water demand in the CMA and to supplement the water supply to the City of Cape Town from local sources. The ‘Voëlvlei Augmentation Scheme’ was identified as one of the options to augment the water supply to the CMA. This option would involve pumping winter water from the Berg River via a pipeline to the Voëlvlei water treatment plant (WTP). The Voëlvlei WTP was designed to treat water from the adjacent Voëlvlei Dam. This Voëlvlei WTP raw water has a higher turbidity and a lower colour in comparison to the Berg River water. The plant’s treatment conditions were optimized to remove this high turbidity. The Voëlvlei WTP raw water also contains a relatively high manganese concentration and coagulation therefore occurs at a high pH with ferric sulphate to remove the manganese during the initial stages of the water treatment process. As the quality of the Berg River water is different to that of the Voëlvlei WTP raw water, it might not be possible to treat the Berg River water at the Voëlvlei WTP using the plants current treatment parameters. The Berg River water could possibly be blended with the Voëlvlei WTP raw water before treatment at the WTP. If the Berg River water, or its blends, could not be treated at the Voëlvlei WTP using the plants current treatment parameters, then this water would have to be pre-treated before entering the plant. Various forms of pre-treatment could be used, e.g., conventional water treatment using either aluminium or ferric sulphate as primary coagulants or ion-exchange water treatment using the MIEX® resin or even a combination of both. The main objective of this study was to determine a treatment strategy for the Berg River water at the Voëlvlei WTP. It is therefore important to determine if the Berg River water could be treated at the Voëlvlei WTP using the current treatment regime. Also, if the Berg River water should be blended with the Voëlvlei WTP raw water, this study would determine which blend would be the most suited for treatment at the Voëlvlei WTP. If the Berg River water could not be treated directly at the Voëlvlei WTP, a pre-treatment strategy for this water should be determined. The cost of pretreatment of the Berg River water as compared to the cost of direct treatment at the Voëlvlei WTP should also be evaluated. In order to determine the best treatment strategy for the Berg River water at the Voëlvlei WTP, it was important to sample the Berg River water and the Voelvlei WTP raw water at regular intervals over a period of at least a year to determine its quality and the impact of seasonal changes. Various laboratory physical (e.g., turbidity) and chemical (e.g., total alkalinity) analyses were conducted on the Berg River water and Voëlvlei WTP raw water to determine its quality. The experimental procedure focused mainly on the Jar test which simulates the coagulation, flocculation and sedimentation processes at the Voëlvlei WTP. Jar tests were conducted on the Berg River water and the Voëlvlei WTP raw water using ferric sulphate and aluminium sulphate as coagulants to determine the optimum pH and optimum coagulant dosage concentration for each coagulant. The Berg River water was also blended with the Voëlvlei WTP raw water in three different proportions and Jar tests were conducted on these blends using ferric sulphate as the coagulant at a coagulation pH of 5.0 and a Fe3+ dosage of 5.0 mg/L. Jar tests were also conducted on these blends with the Voëlvlei WTP treatment parameters using ferric sulphate as the coagulant at a coagulation pH of 9.2 and a Fe3+ dosage of 3.5 mg/L. The analytical results showed a similar pattern for the characterization of the Berg River water and the Voëlvlei WTP raw water. The iron and aluminium concentrations were consistently low during the summer months with significant increases during the winter months. There were no significant seasonal impact on the UV absorbance and colour. The Jar test results of the Voëlvlei WTP raw water and the Berg River water with ferric sulphate as the coagulant showed an optimum Fe3+dosage of 3.0 to 4.0 mg/L and 4.0 to 6.0 mg/L, respectively, with an optimum coagulation pH range of 6.6 to 9.5 and 5.0 to 10.0, respectively. The Jar test results of the Voëlvlei WTP raw water and the Berg River water with aluminium sulphate as the coagulant showed an optimum Al3+ dosage of 2.5 to 3.0 mg/L and 4.0 to 5.0 mg/L, respectively, with an optimum coagulation pH of 6.0 to 7.0 and 6.0, respectively. The Jar test results obtained for all 3 blends were similar to each other. The UV absorbance of the treated water was consistently below the operational specification, while the turbidities were inconsistent and did not always comply with the SANS 241:2006 Specification (Class I) for drinking water. The iron of the treated water was also consistently above the specified value of <0.200 mg/L. The Jar tests conducted on all 3 blends, with the Voëlvlei WTP treatment parameters, also yielded similar results. The UV absorbance of the treated water was consistently above the maximum operational specification of 0.100, while the turbidities were also consistently above the SANS 241:2006 Specification of <1 NTU. Both ferric sulphate and aluminium sulphate can be used as coagulants to treat the Berg River water, although ferric sulphate would be the preferred choice due to its wide coagulation pH range and also because of differences in their health effects. The Voëlvlei WTP coagulates at a pH of 9.2 to remove turbidity and any manganese that might be present in the raw water. The manganese would not be removed at the low coagulation pH of aluminium sulphate. The specified treatment parameters, including the Voëlvlei WTP treatment parameters, used in treating the raw water blends were not effective and further investigation and research is necessary to determine its optimum treatment parameters. This study concluded that the Berg River water cannot be effectively treated at the Voëlvlei WTP using the plants treatment parameters, even if it is blended with the Voëlvlei WTP raw water. Therefore, the best treatment strategy for the Berg River water at the Voëlvlei WTP would be pre-treatment of the water before entering the Voëlvlei WTP. Although there are various ways of pre-treating the Berg River water, this study has identified the following possible pre-treatment strategies:

pre-treatment with ferric sulphate and lime

pre-treatment with ferric sulphate and lime in conjunction with MIEX® resin

pre-treatment with MIEX® resin only

Further research and investigation would be necessary to determine the best pretreatment strategy in terms of cost and efficiency. The pre-treated Berg River water would have to pass through the Voëlvlei WTP treatment process (i.e. high coagulation pH) to remove any manganese that might be present in the water. It is recommended that more samples should be taken at various points along the Berg River upstream of the Voëlvlei WTP over a longer period of time to compare the quality of water at these points in the river and also to monitor the effect of various run-off sites. Further research and investigation is necessary to determine the optimum treatment parameters for the Berg River water when blended with the Voëlvlei WTP raw water. Other blending ratios, different to those used in this study, should also be investigated. A more in-depth investigation is also necessary to determine the actual capital and operational costs for the pre-treatment of the Berg River water. / Dissertation (MSc)--University of Pretoria, 2011. / Chemical Engineering / unrestricted
