Symbiotic relationships with microorganisms are described as a form of evolutionary innovation that allows some animals access to nutrients which otherwise would not be available. The Attine ants are known for the habit of cultivating fungi which provide them with nutrients. Some of these nutrients are obtained when the fungus provides enzymes that are unstable or even absent in ants. In this work we show that the Attini ants presents amylases subjected a low selective pressure and a large amount of potentially harmful amino acid substitutions. These data corroborates the hypothesis that the function of amylase of ants was replaced by fungal amylase. We also demonstrate that, just as with derived Attine, in the basal Attine Mycocepurus goeldii two enzymes is deficient in arginine synthetic pathway, the argininosuccinate lyase and argininosuccinate synthase. These data indicate that supplementation of deficient enzymes in ants made by fungal is an ancient event in the evolutionary history of Attine. / FAPESP: 2014/15939-3.

Tribo-dynamic analysis of hypoid gears in automotive differentials

Karagiannis, Ioannis January 2013 (has links)
Torsional vibrations in differentials of Rear Wheel Drive vehicles are of major importance for the automotive industry. Hypoid transmissions, forming the motion transfer mechanism from the driveshaft to the wheels, suffer from severe vibration issues. The latter are attributed to improper mesh between the mating gear flanks due to misalignments, variation of contact load and shifting of the effective mesh position. For certain operating conditions, the gear pair exhibits high amplitude motions accompanied with separation of the mating surfaces. Ultimately, single or even double-sided vibro-impact phenomena evolve, which have been related to noise generation. This thesis attempts to address these issues by effectively analysing the dynamic behaviour of a hypoid gear pair under torsional motion. The case study considered is focused on a commercial light truck. The major difference of the employed mathematical model to prior formulations is the usage of an alternative expression for the dynamic transmission error so that the variation of contact radii and transmission error can be accounted for. This approach combined to a correlation of the resistive torque in terms of the angular velocity of the differential enables the achievement of steady state, stable periodic solutions. The dynamic complexity of systems with gears necessitates the identification of the various response regimes. A solution continuation method (software AUTO) is employed to determine the stable/unstable branches over the operating range of the differential. The ensuing parametric studies convey the importance of the main system parameters on the dynamic behaviour of the transmission yielding crucial design guidelines. A tribo-dynamic investigation aims at expanding the dynamic model from pure dry conditions to a more integrated elastohydrodynamic (EHL) approach. Analytical and extrapolated solutions are applied for the derivation of the film thickness magnitude based on the kinematic and loading characteristics of the dynamic model. The temperature rise is governed mainly by conduction due to the thin lubricant films. The generated friction is also computed as a function of the viscous shear and asperity interactions. The effective lubricant viscosity is greatly affected by the pressure increase due to the resonant behaviour of the contact load. The final part of this work is involved with a feasibility study concerning the application of Nonlinear Energy Sinks (NES) as vibration absorbers, exploiting their ability for broadband frequency interaction. Response regimes associated with effective energy absorption are identified and encouraging results are obtained, showing the potential of the method.

THE BIOCHEMICAL PROCESS OF LUBRICANT FILM FORMATION INSIDE HIP JOINT REPLACEMENT / THE BIOCHEMICAL PROCESS OF LUBRICANT FILM FORMATION INSIDE HIP JOINT REPLACEMENT

Rufaqua, Risha January 2021 (has links)
The dissertation thesis deals with the lubricant film formation chemistry on hip implant material surfaces with synovial fluid components. Biochemical and tribological properties of synovial fluid after joint replacement are focused, precisely on the chemical composition of the formed lubricating film and chemical structural changes of the associated constituents under mechanical loading. Nevertheless, the synovial fluid components‘ chemical structural changes after the joint replacement are rarely addressed and require further attention. Including metal and ceramics, various combination implant materials were applied within the lubricants of synovial fluid constituents separately and different model synovial fluids to reveal the biochemical reactions and frictional coefficients for understanding the possible lubrication mechanism. Raman Spectroscopic technique is manifested as the most appropriate method to explain the biochemical behaviour of synovial fluid and chemisorption on the surface of the implant material. The method is depicted presenting two different studies focusing on the chemical structure of the synovial fluid film on the implant surface and frictional coefficient measurement of the contact pair within the artificial hip joint. This latest methodological precedent also facilitates to evaluate the chemical structural change of the synovial fluid due to the tribological activity in the hip prosthesis. The thesis expounds original results concerning biotribology to increase the depth of knowledge on joint replacement procedure and to enhance the longevity of the orthopaedic implantations.

KOREAN ANTHRACITE COAL CLEANING BY MEANS OF DRY AND WET BASED SEPARATION TECHNOLOGIES

Mahmoodabadi, Majid 01 January 2015 (has links)
Korean coals are typically high rank anthracite characterized by high ash content and difficult cleaning characteristics. The main objective of the study was to evaluate the feasibility of treating various size fractions within the coal using an assortment of physical coal cleaning technologies. Dry cleaning is preferred due to the friability of the coal. As such, three pneumatic processes were tested including Ore Sorting for the plus 10 mm material, Air Table Separation for 10 x 1 mm fraction and Tribo-electric Separator for - 1 mm fraction. The Dense Medium Cyclone is known to be one of the most efficient separation processes and thus was evaluated for the cleaning of 10 x 1 mm coal. To realize the optimum performances from the Air Table and Rotary Tribo-electric Separator, their operational variables were systematically studied using a parametric experimental design. In addition, the dense medium cyclone and X-ray Transmission Sorting trials were performed under various medium densities and separation settings, respectively. A comparison of the cleaning performance revealed that the Dense Medium Cyclone and X-ray Transmission Sorting proved to provide the most effective results with maximum ash rejection and combustible recovery. The tribo-electric separation process was ineffective while the air table provided modest ash reduction potential.

Sistemática molecular e biogeografia histórica do gênero Aratinga (Psittacidae, Aves) / Molecular systematics and historical biogeography of genus Aratinga (Psittacidae, Aves)

Freddi, André Murilo Magro 16 April 2012 (has links)
Family Psittacidae includes 332 species of parrots and all Neotropical taxa form a monophyletic group (tribe Arini), among those, is the parakeet genus Aratinga. This genus has an unresolved systematics, with few morphological studies and some molecular phylogenies suggest that it is not monophyletic. However, these phylogenies did not include a representative sample of species of the genus. To better understand the evolutionary history of genus Aratinga, we conducted a phylogenetic analysis that included 21 of 22 species of the genus, the monospecific taxon Nadayus nenday that is closely related to some Aratinga species, plus various taxa from tribe Arini. We sequenced five mitochondrial (12S, 16S, cytochrome b, NADH2, COIII) and one nuclear (RAG-1) genes. The phylogenies were reconstructed based on maximum likelihood analysis and Bayesian inference. Relaxed molecular clock estimates were conducted under a Bayesian analysis for inferring the divergence times of the phylogeny and to study the biogeographic history of these species. The phylogenies recovered by both methods were highly congruent and support the absence of monophyly for genus Aratinga. The majority of the species from the genus Aratinga was placed in three highly supported clades that did not group in a monophyletic clade. These three clades match previously suggested groups based on morphological characters. Nandayus nenday was included in one of these clades, that is closely related to a clade that contains four other Arini genera. The only species that was not included in any of these clades was Aratinga acuticaudata, that seems to be more closely related to the genera Diopsittaca and Guarouba with high support values. Most of the speciation within the Aratinga clades may have occurred during the last 5 Mya., but the divergence times between these clades seems to have occurred during the early Miocene. The biogeograhic pattern of the diversification of the Aratinga clades was complex, possibly related to the history of the Andes, multiple colonization of Central America before and after the closure of the Panama Isthmus and also Pleistocene glacial cycles. These results further refute the monophyly of genus Aratinga and a taxonomical revision may be necessary for the taxon.

Tribo-Corrosion of High Entropy Alloys

Shittu, Jibril 12 1900 (has links)
In this dissertation, tribo-corrosion behavior of several single-phase and multi-phase high entropy alloys were investigated. Tribo-corrosion of body centered cubic MoNbTaTiZr high entropy alloy in simulated physiological environment showed very low friction coefficient (~ 0.04), low wear rate (~ 10-8 mm3/Nm), body-temperature assisted passivation, and excellent biocompatibility with respect to stem cells and bone forming osteoblast cells. Tribo-corrosion resistance was evaluated for additively manufactured face centered cubic CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy in simulated marine environment. The additively manufactured alloy was found to be significantly better than its as-cast counterpart which was attributed to the refined microstructure and homogeneous elemental distribution. Additively manufactured CoCrFeMnNi showed lower wear rate, regenerative passivation, less wear volume loss, and nobler corrosion potential during tribo-corrosion test compared to its as-cast equivalent. Furthermore, in the elevated temperature (100 °C) tribo-corrosion environment, AlCoCrFeNi2.1 eutectic high entropy alloy showed excellent microstructural stability and pitting resistance with an order of magnitude lower wear volume loss compared to duplex stainless steel. The knowledge gained from tribo-corrosion response and stress-corrosion susceptibility of high entropy alloys was used in the development of bio-electrochemical sensors to sense implant degradation. The results obtained herewith support the promise of high entropy alloys in outperforming currently used structural alloys in the harsh tribo-corrosion environment.
