Organisation, landowner and farmer management in the conservation of blanket mires

O'Brien, Elizabeth January 2000 (has links)
Despite being Britain's most extensive semi-natural habitat, less research has been carried out on blanket mires than on many other habitats. This is possibly a result of their relative inaccessibility, since they are mainly confined to upland areas in England and Wales and remoter parts of Scotland; also to their apparent abundance, given that they cover significant portions of the landscape. Blanket mires in Britain cover approximately 1.5-2 million hectares; studies have documented substantial losses and up to ninety percent of blanket mires in Britain have been adversely affected. Literature on blanket mires suggests that poor management is one of the key issues for this habitat together with a lack of financial resources and commitment by the Government to protect and conserve sites adequately. The range of land uses of blanket mires is complex and includes agriculture, conservation, recreation, water catchment, grouse and deer management and forestry. These various uses have led to conflict among certain groups and a number of uses have had a detrimental effect on this habitat. Often the value of blanket mires has been overlooked even though this habitat, as part of natural ecosystem process, can provide functions and services such as wildlife interest and hydrological supply systems. A gap has been identified in the current literature on blanket mires, which suggests that research into the broader issues of strategy and management of this habitat, by organisations, landowners and farmers, has not been undertaken. Interview data have been obtained from organisations, landowners and farmers involved with blanket mire management and assessed by interpretational analysis. The research has been carried out both at a national level in Britain and at a local level with a case study of the Forest of Bowland in Lancashire. The local case study has been related to the wider context of blanket mire management and conservation. A total of fifty four in-depth interviews were undertaken in order to gain information on the views, perspectives and experiences of those involved with blanket mire management. How blanket mires are valued has a significant impact on how peatlands are conserved and for what reason. This research reveals that, in order to be effective, organisations will have to have a clear vision of what end point they are working towards and devise practical sategies that are flexible enough to incorporate the distinctiveness of different blanket mire areas.

The mesophase structure of surfactants

Burgoyne, John January 1994 (has links)
The binary surfactant system nona (ethylene glycol) mono-( 11 -oxa- 14,18.22,26-tetramethylheptacosylether) in heavy water has been investigated using deuterium nuclear magnetic resonance, optical polarising microscopy and small angle scattering techniques. The phase diagram has been established and the phases encountered exist for the most part from 24 to 60% surfactant by weight. Above and below these concentrations exist isotropic and lamellar phases respectively. The phase diagram features three main phases, a hexagonal phase of circular rods, a lamellar phase and an intermediate phase. The length of the alkyl chain is shown to be the most important factor in stabilising intermediate phases in preference to the bicontinuous cubic phases usually encountered between hexagonal and lamellar phases in shorter chain homologues. A nematic phase has also been observed in the water penetration scan. The intermediate phase is extensive, ranging from 32 to 60% surfactant by weight and is about 5°C wide. It has a body centred tetragonal mesh structure, comprised of layers of surfactant with regularly spaced holes which are also correlated between the layers, the hole of one layer overlapping the intersection of the layer below. As the concentration is decreased, from 60% to 30% (surfactant by weight) this correlation relaxes. The actual form of the aggregate appears to be elliptical rods (ellipticity - 1.7) joined four by four to form the basis of the mesh structure. A simplified version of the model based on circular rods joined by cube junction regions has been used to quantitatively investigate this phase. The results from this crude model produce results very close to those anticipated and produces results to within 2% of those generated using a more sophisticated model. This system is unusual in that the nature of the interaction between aggregates appears to be dominated by a single interaction - 'headgroup overlap force. This arises from the repulsive pressure experienced by the headgroups penetrating from the aggregate interface and also between headgroups on the same aggregate.

For the present study, among hundreds of groups met during the research period, Caminho da Graça (CdG), a community founded by mid-2004 and currently numbering around seventy groups in Brazil and abroad, was chosen as the object of analysis. The group was started by the (ex-) Rev. Caio Fábio de Araújo, or simply Caio Fábio, backed by a message of Evangelical counterculture or a return to the Christian Church as it was in the New Testament. Although CdG categorically denies the OC label, we can fit them into the movement observing the practices and discourse of the main leadership. The consolidation of Neo-Pentecostalism, especially in the 1990s, is seen as the beginning of suspiciousness and mass disappointment with the Evangelical, and above all the Neo-Pentecostal, worldview. Thus, these alternative communities welcome dissidents hurt by these contexts. It was therefore necessary, firstly, to understand the morphology of churches in the original Christianity period, since one of these groups points of dispute is the return to community experiences lived in the New Testament; secondly, to expose the biographies of the main leaders of the movement; thirdly, to emphasize the conflicts and motivations both within the church context and outside of it in order to understand the exodus and the movement of believers towards a more thorough faith experience; and lastly, to perform ethnographically-inspired participative observation in order to conduct theoretical approaches.

La sécurité de l'emploi dans l'entreprise / Job security in the enterprise

Takafo-Kenfack, Didier 21 November 2014 (has links)
Basis of income and political stability, employment is the gateway through which man gets his roots and acquires a place in society. It is the object of constant legislative intervention in order to assist the worker to fully exercise his career in the enterprise. We have seen these last decades diverse actions geared towards not only assuring to the worker the stability of contractual relations, but equally actions to guarantee him against loss of employment. It is thus the case in a majority of legal systems, notably France and within the OHADA sphere such as Cameroon where the State authorities are striving to drive reforms aimed at preserving contractual relationship. These measures gain importance during the establishment of the employment contract. During the execution of the relationship, involved the suspension, professional training and maintaining the rule of contracts in the event of restructuring in order to achieve the imperative of job stability. It is equally same for various dispositions aimed at protecting employment against the risk of loss which could result from the employer. This study aims to analyze the different techniques of protection of contractual relationship. It relates the recommended possible ways to secure jobs in the enterprise. However, it also displays the insufficiencies and proposes some solutions.

Queued and Pooled Semantics for State Machines in the Umple Model-Oriented Programming Language

Alghamdi, Aliaa January 2015 (has links)
This thesis describes extensions to state machines in the Umple model-oriented programming language to offer queued state machines (QSM), pooled state machines (PSM) and handing of the arrival of unexpected events. These features allow for modeling the behavior of a system or protocol in a more accurate way in Umple because they enable detecting and fixing common design errors such as unspecified receptions. In addition, they simplify the communication between communicating state machines by allowing for asynchronous calls of events and passing of messages between state machines. Also, a pooled state machine (PSM) has been developed to provide a different policy of handling events that avoid unspecified receptions. This mechanism has similar semantics as a queued state machine, but it differs in the way of detecting unspecified receptions because it helps handling these errors. Another mechanism has been designed to use the keyword ‘unspecified’ in whatever state of a state machine the user wants to detect these errors. In this thesis, the test-driven development (TDD) process has been followed to first modify the Umple syntax to add ‘queued,’ ‘pooled,’ and ‘unspecified’ keywords to Umple state machine’s grammar; and second, to make a change to the Umple semantics in order to implement these extensions in Umple. Then, additional modifications have been made to allow for Java code generation from those types of state machines. Finally, more test cases have been written to ensure that these models are syntactically and semantically correct. In order to show the usefulness and usability of these new features, an example is shown as a case study that is modeled using the queued state machine (QSM) besides other small tests cases.

Coherence breaks in first-year essays written by English second language (ESL) university students

Watkinson, Hawthorne Janice 01 1900 (has links)
Writing coherent essays is evidence of a university student's discourse competence and is important in terms of academic success. An analytical taxonomy of coherence breaks {both topic-related and cohesion-related), based on Wikborg (1985; 1990), was used to determine the frequency of coherence breaks in essays written by first-year English Second Language (ESL) students. A subset of these essays was selected for assessment of their holistic coherence (HCR) by raters. The major finding of the statistical tests is that there is a significant relationship between the frequency of coherence breaks, particularly topic-related coherence breaks, and holistic coherence. Furthermore, the relationship between the coherence of essays and marks awarded them was established. Tutor intervention was also found to have had a positive impact when draft and final versions were compared: in general, there was a decrease in the frequency of coherence breaks, and a greater perception of coherence in the final versions. / Linguistics and Modern Languages / M.A. (Linguistics)
